The guy is a harmless "panther" at least in his head, and he makes people laugh. There's nothing wrong with that.

 

I think it shows how low we've sunk as a culture that we raise children like that.

Hovanes, that's all very nice and all (though very vague and still not highly convincing), but I still don't know what Korean language is in Armenian! What should it be according to your narrow rules or vague historical explanations? Did Mashtots write anything down? Did the Koreans exist back then? Or did Armenians know of their existence? Should we ignore the Koreans because they are not part of Mashtots' Armenian? Should we also scrap "herakhos" from Armenian since I hardly doubt Mashtots used one in his days?

 

And please, for the love of god and time, keep your answers short! I don't need to reread everything you wrote in ten different posts.

I thought it was part of the plan to rebuild the setting Saroyan often used in his works. It's meant to boost tourism in Fresno, in the same way that Hannibal has been designed to attract Mark Twain fans. Next thing you know, there will be an "Aram Garoghlanian's Town" ride in Disneyland. "Pay no attention to it."

My thoughts exactly. I didn't realize the flag, out of all things, was a national symbol of such worth that an artist could not dance on it.. Apparently this Chernock fellow, who I have never seen, nor heard of, received a standing ovation during his show in Yerevan, which the Minister did not even see. Apparently the audience got the message and was not offended.

But unless you are Armenian, or of some Armenian origin, why would you consider Armenia as a vacation spot? Actually, as far as I am concerned (I'm in the US), why would anyone consider any of those places between western Europe and china as "vacation" spots?

 

The more educated tourist would. Unless Armenia starts throwing rave parties in remote churches, it's indeed not going to attract as many tourists as Ibiza does. On the other hand, Armenia does have the potential to attract the jet set.

But that photo - it's a bookflap dustcover photo, not a pin-up shot from a model agency. The photo was taken for a purpose - to perpetuate whatever image the author or his publishers wanted the book-buying public to think Saroyan was. So it is worth exploring what that image was.

 

Look, the man was eye-candy. That's all that's worth knowing. There's no photoshopping here. Not everyone needs photoshopping. And others couldn't be attractive even with the most professional photoshopper. Saroyan was a natural. The above is not the only photo that was ever taken of him. He looks as good, if not better, on many others, from different angles, paparazzi shots, as well as posed shots. He's still hot.

The Turks are not going to happy, especially after what the Armenians did after Turks tried to advertize their country with a DVD in Time..

There will be a specific message that that 3/4 face view is meant to convey, particularly through the angle of the camera, and the direction of the sitter's eyes.

For example, if the author wanted to be seen as being particularly visionary or futuristic in his thoughts and writings then perhaps his eyes might be looking upward slightly, and ahead. If he is a political leader then the camera might be looking up at him, emphasising physical stature to reflect his greater intellectual stature than mere mortals. Having no eye contact sugests remoteness and superiority and inscrutability.

In that photo Saroyan is looking straight ahead but at something out of sight, and the camera is level with him but set at a lower height than would be usual for a face level portrait. So I suppose that is meant to suggest that the author examines and writes about contemporary things and lives, from the standpoint of the ordinary person, but that Saroyan is still of greater stature than those ordinary lives he writes about.

Since I've never read any of his books, I don't know if that does reflect his work.

 

Some people are naturally good-looking. Others need A LOT of photo trickery to look even in the slighest bit attractive. Obviously the best shot is the one that is published. We all look horrible with our eyes half-closed, etc. So what? The point is that with some people you turn around when they walk past you down the street, and others you don't even notice. And then there are those you try to avoid, because while they might have the "right" proportions, there is something in their personality that is so unnattractive that it makes their whole physical being unattractive. The most attractive are those with strong personalities. Those people do not need to have the "perfect" physical proportions. And that is where photo trickery can no longer help. You either have it or you don't.

Sheep? Whatever takes your fancy, I suppose. As Nairi said, "tastes differ".

 

I think he meant the church in the back, but I guess that too is photo trickery. Taken from a different angle, with black and white fading, that same church would look horribly ugly.

Actually, Saroyan went through a phase when he looked good from all angles. Even as an older man, though, there is something very good-looking about him. Or sexy, I should say. I think it's more in his personality, the sheer confidence. But then again, tastes differ.

I agree that those manuscripts should remain where they are. If people want to see them, let them travel to Armenia. We've lost enough cultural artifacts to others against our will. And apparently there are still one too many who want to continue destroying the little bits and pieces that we have left on foreign shores. We don't need to participate in this destruction. So what if the Armenian nation and its cultural heritage remains unknown to most of the world? We should be confident enough not to care.

Wow - Didn't realise you were such a ice skating fan. Apart from olympic competitions, I don't think I've ever watched/followed any figure skating at all...

Ah, I finally got to see it. The other link didn't work for me. Nice! But he'll have to be prepared for the World's in March. The European men are jumping quads, and god knows what the Asians are going to come up with. Too bad Plushenko is not competing. I truly missed him this year. Perhaps the first time in years that not a single Russian is going to win a medal, except in Ice Dancing. The Armenian Ice Dancers came in 14th this year. Three places below last year. Julia Sebestyen for Hungary (with an Armenian coach) is back up for the ladies and a potential contender for bronze at the Europeans. Meanwhile Elene Gedevanishvili from Georgia has truly proven herself to be a natural.

 

Anyway, last year Buttle skated to Khachaturian's Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia. Watch out for more Armenian music and coaches during the World's.

For some reason, Korean came to mind just now. We call the country Korea, the people koreatsi, but what do we call their language?

as for -ik, some names take -chik instead... don't ask me why...

I've heard the -chik ending as well. But I believe it's rather rare. Same with -ak, as in Armenak. But not Karenak (at least that I've heard of). Obviously -o and -ik are the most productive suffixes, i.e. they can be attached to practically any name in Armenian. It would be a futile exercise to try to make an exhaustive list, since the list would be (almost) infinite.

 

Speaking of Harut.. I came across Haro in one of the baby names sites (don't remember which one).
