    Zulal Cd Out

ZULAL's self titled CD hit finally hit the stands today! Zulal, meaning clarity, is an Armenian a cappella trio whose original arrangements pay tribute to Armenia's folk roots while forging imaginative harmonies that add a fresh energy to traditional repertoire. http://jarmen.net/zulalcoverweb.jpg CLICK TO GET YOUR COPY In less than two years, Zulal has developed a solid performance record including a coast-to-coast U.S. tour, an audition for Cirque de Soleil and a nomination for "Best Folk/World Song" at the 2004 Annual Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards. 'Zulal', meaning 'clarity', is an Armenian a cappella trio comprised of three Armenian women: Teni Apelian, Yeraz Markarian, and Anais Tekerian. Their original arrangements pay tribute to Armenia's folk roots while forging imaginative harmonies that add a fresh energy to traditional repertoire. Keeping to the folk tradition, Zulal writes its arrangements in an organic style, using the simplicity of voice to capture the heart of Armenia's rural music. Their repertoire is marked by the sounds of longing, celebration, struggle, desire, and reverie. This enhanced CD includes: performance video, weblinks, English translations of songs, and 12 audio tracks. For tour dates and more information, visit www.zulal.org.

Anna Mailian is awsome!!! Lucine Zakarian is classic and awsome!!! Look out for Naira Abrahamyan- She is going to rise fast! There are many Armenian women with great voices not only in Hayastan but all around the world. Unfortunately not many have actually been recorded. Have any of you heard Anoush Barclay? She has performed Vahan Artsruni's "Komitas 10 Revelations" in New York, originally sung by Anna Mailian, and I must tell you- she ROCKED! To all of you Anna Mailian fans- you might want to hear this, check out the Vahan Artsruni "Komitas 10 Revelations" Clips: http://www.armenianmegastore.com/cds/cd_index.html Have fun exploring!
  4. You failed to see my sarcasm, Read the paragraph over
  5. Rabiz (short for “Rabochaye Izkustvo” – best translated from Russian as “Peasant Art”) is without a doubt infectious. Reason- same as why Macarena, the Chicken Dance, The Electric Slide and any other cheesy pop tune is. It is a) easily comprehendible – since no vast grammar is needed to write/understand the lyrics catchy- no doubt c) upbeat- must be danceable d) has the forbidden fruit syndrome: our face to the world is that we are a WESTERN civilization, and Rabiz is a reflection of our Eastern influence (i.e. Turkish, Kurd, Mongol) that is why we keep it deeply closeted from the rest of the civilized world. Who would want to admit that he or she indulges in the culture of the nations that have done the unthinkable to the Armenians?!? Mixed with the Soviet Era “Estradain” music and looped through present day midi technology you have what is present day Rabiz. Rabiz is no longer a matter of like and dislike, face it- WE ALL LIKE IT even if little or selectively. You put any human in a cardboard box for a century he will begin to like that also. Except now we are in a different place in time both socially and politically. And our art world is beginning to cross over to other cultures. It is up to all of us to decide what face we would like to show the world.
  6. Thank you angel4hope!!!! I am quite touched by your comment I have an Armenian project scheduled for recording next year as well, but before it's released it will have to pass the fileters and get the endorsement of some of our greats. I take all contributions to Armenian music library very seriously. And I have to sell enouth copies of my current CD "Plan B" to generate the funds to do it. Cheers! A
  7. The fact is, it's the Armenian CONSUMER that puts the money in their business "the rabiz market"... that's why they have money in the first place. Capitalizm has nothing to do with it, it is the UNEDUCATED/NARROWMINDED/IGNORANT consumer that fuels the jet that transports this garbage. This scene is a product and a reflection of existing groups among us. The only thing an average Armenian consumer can do is to simply support the music that we as Armenians can be proud of, and the rest will fall into its place
  8. I read each and every one of your comments. Here is my two cents: The problem with our music is fundamental. Many young musicians start off with best of intentions, but don’t take the time to learn enough about what makes our music authentic or to examine their interpretation of it. Once on the “wrong” track they don’t even think to get off. Alas, this is our cultural state of being.
  9. I almost died laughing… My friend Lesley posted news about my show at The Cutting Room in he events section of the forum. A day later she got a “Reservation Request” through my website of 2 seats from someone asking if this was Arthur Meschian’s concert. Now I know if last name Meschian appeared anywhere in the announcement I could understand how this may have been misinterpreted. However the announcement clearly reads “J. ARMEN LIVE AT THE CUTTING ROOM” Broken telephone? Pjatsats herakhos? Oh yeah All the best, Pass on the music Armen

  16. I do recall that program. All Agassi really talked about is his memory of armenian food and the fact that his mother made too much of it every time...

I agree with you Sasun. But there is something that I always thought was really beautiful about the duduk players, there is an unwritten seniority system, where Djuvan will always be the "USTA" (the Master) as long as he's alive, and so on and so on... It is perhaps the only musical instrument in our culture that has that. I think that is really beautiful because it shows humility and respect...
  18. Hey Edward, the names in the band you are somewhat correct about- Arthur, Grish, Levon were the band and then their friends would sit in with them. However the people who pulled the embassy stunt with him were NOT his bandmates. It was his friends Ashot, Anahit and another woman who's name I don't remember.
  19. No reason for confusion. I just realized who "Jend" was. She is my cousin.
  20. Jend- I can't believe it, vorteghits ur Everybody, meet my first cousin "JEND" as I just discovered I am speechless!!!
  21. Thank you Movses, nice meeting you...
  22. Wow, COOL I guess you have that topic covered around here Here is something you might not know- The last track on my album "Fallen Angel" was recorded live in Yerevan in 1999 during a joint concet Vahan and I did together for A1+ TV Network. It's just two guitars and voice...
  23. Behold the power of the internet Dan http://www.cdbaby.com/jarmen you can get a CD right here online and have it shipped anywhere in the world
  24. Oh boy, his whole life is a cool movie.... Do you guys know anything about Arthur and 3 of his friends locking themselves inside the British embassy in Russia in 1971 protesting an unlawful arrest of students after an Apostles concert? hands down, the first name that comes to mind is Vahan Artsruni. Aside from being a close friend of mine, I really enjoy playing with him. We do something together every chance we get. I am glad you enjoyed the songs Dan.
  25. Hi Azat, I am sorry to hear that you're having trouble... Here is something you can try- if you are using dial up and you are on CD Baby link , the is a low-fi botton.
