  1. The buttons of Victorian repression are sumptuously undone in Angels and Insects, a fascinating and downright sexy adaptation of A.S. Byatt's imaginative novella. When English explorer William Adamson (Mark Rylance) accepts an invitation to stay on at the country estate of his wealthy sponsor, he believes to be re-entering the civilized world after his travails in the wild Amazon jungles. What he encounters, however, is far more lurid and seamy than anything found in the rainforests. After marrying the nubile Eugenia (Patsy Kensit) -- a woman who takes him to bed with a ferocity that belies her shy, naive exterior -- William comes to realize that his new family has secrets and lies that no one dares to expose, or even speak of. Soon enough, his treatise on insect life -- illustrated by the family's poor cousin.
  2. There's been a lot of talk this year that Australian filmmakers are failing the public. True, there have been some shockers this year, and I fear that the criticism is apt when it comes to comedies. But Japanese Story is up there with the best of Australian drama like Soft Fruit, Lantana and Walking on Water. The two main actors are fantastic. The premise is not highly original (two people who hate each other stuck in the outback alone), but the script is clever and well executed.

2003 prediction? Last December, Capital predicted house prices to rise by 20% in 2003, based on Nationwide's index. Areas outside London have kept the UK housing market booming in 2003, but it over-estimated the rate of growth.

Charlie walks through the movie seeking forgiveness--from his Uncle Giovanni (Cesare Danova), who is the local Mafia boss, and from Teresa, his best friend Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro), the local loan shark Michael (Richard Romulus) and even from God. He wants redemption. Scorsese, whose screenplay has autobiographical origins, knows why Charlie feels this way: He knows in his bones that the church is right, and he is wrong and weak. Although he is an apprentice gangster involved with men who steal, kill and sell drugs, Charlie's guilt centers on sex. Impurity is the real sin; the other stuff is business.

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer songs that don't consist of nothing but rhyming swear words. My ears (as big as they are) are not trash cans.

Regional winners and losers? House prices to become more "realistic", especially in the North, where prices are currently "unsustainable". Northern Ireland and the Northern regions will see prices growing fastest at around 12%. London will have the slowest growth for the second year running. However, improved job prospects in the City and housing shortages will keep house prices rising at about 6%. But there will be less regional variation than in 2003.
