Armenians in the Holy Land Anush BabajanyanI stayed well into a night at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem together with a friend. It was the Armenians’ turn to clean the tomb of Jesus. We watched the small groups clean the top of this tomb with care, refill the oil of lamps that burn over it. Priests did it with a certain habit, pilgrims did it with awe and tears. It looked like an incredibly special moment for these people to simply clean their part of the church, on this piece of land where it is believed that Jesus was crucified and buried. A small nation with a large diaspora, Armenians share ownership of some of the most valued sites of Christian heritage in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and other locations in the area. Some of such sites are the Holy Sepulcher, St. James Cathedral, the Church of the Nativity, and the Tomb of St. Mary. Armenians are one of the Christian groups with the largest share, together with the Catholics, Orthodox Greeks, and the Coptic. An agreement of Status Quo, initiated by the Ottoman Empire in 1852, sustains the relationships and actions between these and more groups. Armenians have lived in Jerusalem’s Armenian Quarter for centuries. Unlike many other places around the world, they did not come here only after the 1915 Genocide, they had lived here long before. According to several historical accounts, they began settling here in the 4th century after officially converting to Christianity. The Armenian Quarter occupies one sixth of the area of Old City Jerusalem Read More:https://hetq.am/en/article/86392

BRUSSELS—At the initiative of European Parliament member Loucas Fourlas, 33 European lawmakers addressed a letter to the EU High Representative Josep Borrell regarding the attack by Azerbaijani Armed Forces on the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia on November 16. The lawmakers condemned Azerbaijan’s aggression and demanded that the Azerbaijani armed forces immediately and completely withdraw from the territory of the Republic of Armenia. They also urged the EU External Action Service to put pressure on Azerbaijan to stop and prevent the violation of the territorial integrity of Armenia. “Unlike the EEAS’s declaration, the letter of the MEP’s clearly calls the aggressor by its name. The EU needs to put pressure on Azerbaijan with concrete measures, in order to ensure the immediate and complete removal of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces from the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia,’’ said EAFJD President Kaspar Karampetian, who also welcomed the initiative by the European lawmakers. On Friday, the President of the European Council Charles Michel announced that at his request, the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet in Brussels next month on the margins of the Eastern Partnership summit. The complete text of the letter is below.Read More: https://asbarez.com/33-european-lawmakers-urge-baku-to-withdraw-forces-from-armenia/

Greek, Armenian, Hindu, Kurdish, Mid-East Groups Write to Senate Leaders; Work with House to Enforce CAATSA Sanctions on Erdogan WASHINGTON—A coalition of ethnic, faith-based, and civic groups representing Americans from across the nation are calling on Senate leaders – and working with U.S. Representatives – to enforce U.S. sanctions on Turkey and block Erdogan’s request to purchase 40 F-16 fighters and 80 F-16 modernization kits. In a recent letter to Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Armed Services Committee Chairmen and Ranking Members Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Jack Reed (D-RI), Jim Risch (R-ID), and Jim Inhofe (R-OK), representatives of the Hellenic American Leadership Council, Armenian National Committee of America, American Friends of Kurdistan, Hindu American Foundation, and Middle East Forum shared their concerns about “national security risks posed to the United States by Turkey’s dramatic turn away from the Western alliance and our norms of democracy and the rule of law.” Read more:https://asbarez.com/coalition-calls-on-congress-to-block-u-s-f-16-sales-to-turkey/

Sides > How to Pickle Vegetables - Armenian Torshi HOW TO PICKLE VEGETABLES - ARMENIAN TORSHI Published: Mar 18, 2020 · Modified: Mar 16, 2021 · By: Janelle Jump to Recipe Print Recipe This pickled vegetables recipe is from my mother-in-law, they call this Torshi which in Armenian translates to pickled vegetables. I've been thinking of foods that can be stored for lengthy periods, all due to COVID 19 and home made vegetable pickles came to mind. This recipe is fairly straightforward to follow and is done in under 10 steps. I've left the quantities open as you can adjust the amounts of particular veggies to how you want, e.g., if you would like more cauliflower over string beans, go for it. Without further ado, here is my Armenian torshi recipe. https://plantbasedfolk.com/pickled-vegetables/
