My grandmother was also at Vittel, and was a US citizen so was traded for, I think, 3 German soldiers in a POW exchange. She was sent to Lisbon from Vittel on a train, and from there took the Swedish ship Gripsholm to the US, arriving in new york in March 1944. She was Russian by ancestry, but born in US. I wonder if she knew your grandmother? When were the babies born? My grandmother said the nuns at Vittel were so kind to the internees.
