cmg
I'm trying to find out exactly where in Armenia my family is from. My last name is Gurenlian. I've tried looking at maps of Armenia/Turkey but ones I've found with smaller town names are in Armenian, and I'm unable to read it. Is there a town in Armenia or Turkey close to Guren? The only Gurenlians I know are my family, I've never found online or in the phone book another Gurenlian. My gramma(nee Kalajian--much more common) passed away and it's really hard now to find out the truth as to where 'we come from'. I never knew my grandfather so theres no way to get answers from him. There is one rumor that my grandfathers family name was Tashjian(? again more popular) but the name was changed cus they were criminals and were hiding. another is when they arrived in America they just said where they were from Guren, and it was turned into Gurenlian. Any help would be appreciated.

Dave
Here's a fairly detailed site about the old Armenian community of Gurun, Turkey: http://gurun.ermeni.org/index_eng.html
HyeMew2
I don't know if you check this or will get this, but I've found out some stuff about the Gurenlians and where they are from thanks to ancestry.com. Yozgat, just like me. Reply to this message if you want to find out more.

Saramelkonian
thanks so much for posting the link to the ancestry site - I found links to my grandparents listing on a ship manifest, and confirmation that they were born in Tokat (which is not so far from Gurun - I was a bit confused because in an e-mail my Dad sent me shortly before he died, he said "Tukaut", and my grandfather's passport says Eutokia - which I now know is the same as Tokat - but it's nice to have the confirmation) Arpa/Dave - do you know of any sites for Tokat that are like the ones you've posted for Gurun? I'm also trying to find out about French catholic schools in the area (my grandmother went to one, and I'm trying to find out where she might have been) cmg - sorry for hijacking your thread - I seem to do it a bit on this forum
