You can not really increase a jpg images resolution, or any other images format. You can retouch the image with a software. Or there is ways of extrapolations fake resolution increase. Sip Posted April 30, 2004 Report Share Posted April 30, 2004 What is resolution of an image? Basically digital images are taken and represented as a collection of pixels. Each pixel is a tiny square of a specific color. A 640x480 picture would have 640 pixels in the horizontal and 480 pixels in the vertical direction. So now, you can take this image and "resample" it into higher resolutions. A 640x480 image can be resamples into a 1024x768 picture... basically, for every pixel, one can generate two pixels in the new image. Thus, the picture will have 4 times as many pixels now however, you can't just magically increase the information content of your picture as Domino is pointing out! The simplest resampling techniques will just duplicate the pixels (or do interpolation). So for our example above, your image will have 4 times as much resolution (2x more in each direction) but then the pixels will be repeated next to each other, effectively resulting in larger squares! Can you be more intelligent in your resampling? Yes ... one technique is called anti-aliasing with basically filters the produced image to get rid of the sharp edges produced by the larger pixels (digitization effect). There are other filtering techniques that can be used to smooth out the picture during and after it has been resampled. Without going into too much technical details, and to answer your question ... yes images can be resampled from lower resolution to higher resolution. There are ways to make them look better than simply streching the picture by using filtering and other techniques. However, you shouldn't expect to somehow gain more information (i.e. have new things appear in your image that weren't there before!). Good graphics programs such as photoshop do a pretty good job of this. Irfanview available for free at http://www.irfanview.com can also do this and it also has this feature to fit an image to your monitor screen for viewing, by using resampling to increase the size of smaller pictures while still having them look smooth and good. Edit: Some of the methods irfanview can do are: Hermite filter, Triangle filter, Mitchel filter, Bell filter, B-Spline Filter, Lanczos filter or just simple resizing with no filtering. For each type of image, one or the other may work better. If you have an image of purely horizontal and vertical lines (like picture of a chess board) the simple resizing may lead to the best quality as it will maintain those sharp edges!
