Meet the P.R. China

Armen

Armen jan, WHAT U MEAN: "The fact that majority of the Chinese don't mean it doesn't prove anything for me." !!! after this sentence i don't know how i feel... don't forget that chinese language BELONGS TO CHINESE PEOPLE!!! NOONE KNOWS IT BETTER THAN THEY DO!!!! u are just a 老外 who hasn't even lived here long enough。。。 no, changchun's summer is not like spring and is not long AT ALL! it is not covered with green either!

Anahit jan, there are planty of nations who view their history different from how the outsiders view it. We Armenians are one of those nations as well. It does not matter what a lot of Chinese say. If I find a pattern in those placenames it will put their claims that they don't realy mean it under a huge question mark.

Chang Chun was always regarded as the Spring city of the Northern China, Check it in the link above. Also, some say that the character 长 comes from the Great Wall somehow.

About Chang Chun being green... You're kidding me ... It was one of the greennest places I have seen. Although I was there in summer. It might be that the city has the mildest climate in the Northern China, which has a severe climate in general.

Stop calling me a 老外 like it is some kind of curse ;) It just means a foreigner.

the fact that armenia officially is considered "东欧" is what i tell them, but right away the question pumps out: "BUT IT IS IN ASIA!!!!" ARMEN JAN, GREECE IS NOT IN ASIA!!! i am sure u know! so no way for calling Greece an Asian country! and they don't consider eveyone from USSR russian: we simply don't look like!

Well you said that they consider us Asia based on our temperament. I mentioned Greece because they could be considered an Asian as well based on their temperament.

On multiple occassion when I metioned that Armenian is a 前苏联 (former USSR) country they mentioned Russia. Although at present they tend to diferentiate already.

and don't write, pls that 菲律宾 means poor/unworthy-law-guest, CAUSE IT DOESN'T! even the foreigners i told about your "theory" laughed at me :msn-cry:  "Russia means a hungry country, France means country of law..." AYAYAYAYAY! Russia has always been stronger and wealthier than China untill MAYBE recently when chinese economy started booming (very unevenly, though)!!!

Russia was always stronger and wealthier?! Give me a break. Go check out the first encounters of Chinese Imperial court with the first Russian monarchs from Romanov dynasty, like Aleksei Mikhailovich or Peter the Great. Also, check the history of Cossack invasions in Amour and Khabarovsk region and the first Cossack settlements in that area. The first Russian missions in Qing dynasty court will realy make you smile and ever cry :) There are some facinating story of how these two nations had totally different psychology of communication. There was so much diplomatic miscommunication between them that it realy makes you laugh.

The first letter from the Chinese emperor to the Russian Czar basically requests him to knee down and beg for mercy :) While the Russians interpreted it as a pladge of loyalty from the Chinese emperor. Also, the Chinese court bureaucracy, which alwasy had special ceremonies and procedures set for meeting foreign diginitaries delayed the first Cossack mission to Beijing because they had no gifts with them :)

When the Chinese came to know the Russian Empire the Qing dynasty was at it peak in 17-18th century and China was the wealthiest country in the whole world. It was wealthier not only compared to Russia but all Europe and USA. China's economy of early and middle Qing dynasty period amounted to 25-30% of world economy. Just like US is now. If you remember, when the first British ambassador arrived to the Chinese court for trade negotiations he was told that China does not need anything from any country. And the Brits used gunboat diplomacy to make their way to the Chinese market. So, a country like Russia could as well be view as very poor :)

As to France, it was during the Fench revolution that the Chinese came to know France in deep sense and many Chinese studied law in France. One of them being Deng Xiaoping, the architect of Chinese economic miracle.

Anyway, i have found NO SCHOLAR/TEACHER/ PROFESSOR to back your "theory". they all just laugh! But don't give up! Just tell your "theory" to foreigners who haven't been to china, or simply don't know chinese. IT REALLY SOUNDS VERY INTERESTING AND CONVINCING just not for an "insider".

It is not enough to be an "insider" to understand this thing. You must be both and "insider" and an "ousider", meaning you must have a basic knowladge of world and Chinese history and make the connections.

China takes first step to revalue yuan

Shifts to basket of currencies from dollar peg

By Steve Goldstein & Greg Robb, MarketWatch

Last Update: 10:14 AM ET July 21, 2005

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Bowing to intense pressure from Washington and its G-7 allies, the Chinese government on Thursday announced the first step towards revaluing its currency.

In a statement the People's Bank of China said it is dropping its yuan-dollar peg in favor of one vs. a basket of currencies. The government also lifted the value of the currency by more than 2%.

"The People's Bank of China will make adjustment of the renminbi exchange rate band when necessary according to market development as well as the economic and financial situation. The renminbi exchange rate will be more flexible based on market condition with reference to a basket of currencies," it said.

China said it's adjusting the exchange rate to 8.11 yuan per dollar; overnight, the dollar traded at 8.2765 yuan overnight.

The yen surged and the dollar slid after China announced its currency move. See full story.

"It's a small move. It's a token. It is not going to have much immediate economic effect," said Robert Brusca, chief economist at FAO Economics.

"But it sets things in motion," he said, noting that Malaysia has announced it will end its peg and adopt a managed float, with the MYR's value managed against an undisclosed reference basket.

"The significance of this move is dependent on what China does next. They've lifted the lid on the expectations," Brusca said.

Economists said the key for further movement is how the U.S. political system reacts.

The United States welcomed China's move to a more flexible foreign exchange rate.

"China's full implementation of its new currency regime will be a significant contribution toward global stability," Treasury Secretary John Snow said in a statement. He said U.S. officials will "monitor" China's managed floating exchange rate "as their exchange rate moves to alignment with underlying market conditions."

Sen. Charles Schumer, Democrat of New York, a key critic of China's currency regime, called China's move to a basket of currencies "a good first step albeit a baby step."

"If there are not larger steps in the future, we will not have accomplished very much. But after years of inaction, this step is welcome," Schumer said.

The daily trading price of the dollar vs. the yuan will continue to be allowed to float within a band of 0.3%, while the trading prices of non-U.S. dollar currencies will be allowed to move in yet-to-be announced bands, it said in a statement released on its Web site.

Members of the U.S. Congress have long complained that an artificially low yuan has boosted Chinese exports and hurt U.S. manufacturers.

The Treasury and G-7 have been concerned that China's dollar peg was limiting foreign exchange market adjustments to the large U.S. current account deficit.

So who are we betting on in the China-Taiwan confrontation? :)

style_images/master/snapback.png

Who "we"? Armenians? You just invented another one of those "Chinese-Armenians" jokes :) A nation of 1.3 bil attacks a nation of 23 mil and we are going to "bet"?

Gumri (Leninakan) declares war on China. The Chinese general stuff after a week of unsuccessful discussions about the possible scale of attack from Gumri sends a spy mission to Gumri to make some preliminary findings. The mission arrives at Gumri, finds out the places of Gumri's general stuff. It appears to be a house on the outskirts of town. They arrive at the place, approach the window, look into it and see two drunk guys talking to each other:

"Onnig, we declared war on China yesterday. Do you have any idea where are we going to bury all those Chinese...?"

It sounds better in Gumri dialect:

"Tso Onnig, etqam Chinatsi inchekh bdi taghenq or?"

A Uyghur militant group that helped to topple Bashar-al Assad has vowed to take the fight to China. The Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) threatened Beijing in a video released on Dec 8, the day the Syrian regime collapsed, showing its fighters holding machine guns and wearing military fatigues. “Now here in Syria, in all the cities here, we fight for Allah, and we will continue to do this in our Urumchi, Aqsu and Kashgar in the future,” said one masked man, listing cities in China’s Xinjiang region, from where the Uyghurs hail. “We will chase the Chinese infidels away.” Using the Uyghurs’ preferred name for their homeland, he added: “We have fought in Homs, in Idlib and we will continue the fight in East Turkistan. “Allah has given us a victory here. May he also grant us a victory in our own land.” Get the latest headlines: US US and The Telegraph are websites of The Telegraph, the UK's best-selling quality daily newspaper providing news and analysis on UK and world events, business, sport, lifestyle and culture.
