MosJan
has anyone used solar power ? haw do you setup a system ? haw long will it work or haw good is it. ? i have a property in Colorado, no way i can get a power Co to get me power, so other then Gas-Generators i can only use solar power, it seems that it should work. i can use most any of my Ell units on 12V - instead of 110v. i have found a system on Ebay - >> it looks ok http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=2011228645The CE Indoor Custom Lighting Solar Power Kit with Panel Have you ever thought about how nice it would be to have lighting at that remote cabin or when the power went off? Well think no more. Now you can have a system for less than $500.00 which will give you all you need for emergency lighting when the power goes out. You will get: One: Solar panel. One: Charge Controller unit. One: Storage Battery (with Controller). Six: Lighting Fixtures with on/off switches. Six: Low Energy Use 6VDC Replaceable Lights Over 160 feet of power cable with common connectors http://rod.misproductions.com/newstore/RemoteLoadImage/2222.jpg [ March 24, 2002, 03:02 PM: Message edited by: MosJan ]
Azat
Dear Movses,Solar power has changed alot in the last few years. The technology has improved dramatically in the last decade. The prices have dropped drastically. Much of this is because of the early adopters who helped scientists developed better solar panels. It is still not as inexpensive as regular heat and electricity, but when the situation is right, as in your case, it is a great solution. With all that said, it is not a job that anyone on this board can give you advise on.(Maybe Sip) You need an architect who has worked on solar homes and who can design your home to meet all the needs of an efficient solar system. They have to design it such that it consumes little energy and produces enough to meet your needs. You may want to check the epa site to get more knowledge about systems, and you need to find people who have large systems like so and ask them for the names of people who designed their system and possibly call couple of the big companies and ask them to recommend architects who can assist you. Good luck. It is a great thing you are doing.
Hyeflyer
MosJanThere is a home I see in Wisconsin on the way to the U.P. of Michigan that is solar and wind generator powered.I stop at a resturant about 10 miles from it.They have a news paper article on the wall about that home. The thing I found interesting is the home owners sell the extra power they generate to the local power company. It must be nice to get a check from them instead of giving them a check. Guest Fadi
I had a chimistry professor in College that was heating his house with solar power... at the top he put black photo-electric cells like capters, but not for the production of electricity, that thing was heating alchol that was pomped in all the house and used as a heater. Guest Fadi
Another thing, 500 $ Is expansive for the picture you are showing here... I remember some cell the were selling somewhere from Can. 30 $ or something(do not remember exaclly) that were that size, to supposedly crahge the battery of a car... I never believed it could in fact some of my friends and me 10 of them for a project, and for the power they provided, I was very impressed... more then expected. Hyeflyer
MosJanI was going to keep ? on this topic .I wanted to see if there were any other Armenian trades men.Well there doesnt seem to be.The house can be framed as any other house EXCEPT.You have to double the framing where the panels will sit on the roof all the way to the foundation.Rafters wall studs floor joists.I have built quite a few houses that have solar water heat and also electric. You wil the house just like any other only you used the solar components. MosJan
Thank you all for your responds, I was just not sure if I could use solar power or not, and haw long would it last before i need to recharge. I was not sure if the solar systems where dependable or not I have found a Company who can get me a solar power system for under $400, it will have enough power for 36 hours. Just in case if I need more power I always have my generator to backed up.I’m not building a house, the property that I have is 20 acres, I’m not going to stay at this location, it’s not going to be my house, it’s for camping + Hunting + something up in the forest to I get away from everything.I found a nice 1985 30’ Camper trailer that I can park at most anywhere that I like in the property, and solar power is only for some of the ell. Appliances. TV + Radio + Lights + ETC. I can use generators, but the noise is driving me nuts I do not need a solar power water hitter, I can use propane for hitting and cooking needs. For only few days a year it’s it not worth to spend more then that. Agene thank all you for your help.

Twilight Bark
Hi MosJan,I am no expert on the subject, but I think you can use somewhat "undersized" solar cells, and "oversized" batteries if you are going to use your cabin only a few days a year. So the battery would be "trickle-charged" all year, and when you do need it, you would still have plenty of power at hand. In other words, in your special situation, money may be better spent on "macho" batteries rather than "macho" solar cells. My apologies if I am pointing out the obvious. TB P.S. I understand you are using the cabin for hunting. I dislike the idea of "killing for fun", but that's another issue. Your choice, your values. P.P.S. I wish you a safe trip. MosJan
TB-Thanks for your advice . I will consider each and every one of them. TB - to must Hunters - Killing and hunting are not the same. But then agene each and every one of us are entitled to our opinions, and I will respect your opinion us long as your not front of me wan I’m trying to hunt something. . Guest Fadi
MosJan, if you don't care of power so much, then you can build your Solar Cells yourself, yes it is right. Its possible, even if the result is poor, I already tried it in the past, when I took all these things and put them in garbage and bough actual real cells... The problem is not that it dosn't work, but more about the poor energy you will take from these things, also the ionisation... Its fun to build them, because it is really not expensive, I have have kippen the plan somewhere I will scan it for you, from a project I had some times ago. Its called the "copper oxide photo cell" You can find some shemas over the web, none of them are interesting BTW, mine was more fun you build these by blaque, and connect 4 in parallels and then each of these for plaques you connect them in series, O.K O.K, maybe compared with new silicone Cells, you would need 10-20(or even more) times more spaces, but the prize we will save, you could cover big territories without paying even lesser then 100(even if I wasnt able to generate more then 15 W). I remember my first years of interest in natural source of energy(now I have other interests ). TB, I desagree with you again Thats becoming pathological LOL. I have tried what you suggest, it dosnt work at all, Solar cells under 20 W, would not charge big batteries efficiantly, don't forget batteries discharge slowly, and when you don't have good cells, it would only be enough to maintain the charge of the batterie and never be able to charge it, and more it charge and more it resist charge... you will end up of cells that will take a year and the battery would even not be charged. I think he should invest for this... afterall if someone can invest 1000 for a computer, why not 2000 $ for a good cell system. http://www.partsonsale.com/bpsolar.html The 150 W, is very interesting, in your place I would have taken that offer. Then you would need a good battery pack, 200-300 $ and the regulator etc... Or there is another alternative, you pack 10 car batteries, you charge them, put them in series, with a curant modulator that will transform the DC to an AC, you bring it there, you will have long with this, it will give you a lot of juice, You can watch TV and everything using the standart 120 V could be used, then when it is descharged, and you have enough of it, you then return recharge... but again it will take you a hell of good charger. Twilight Bark
quote:Originally posted by Domino:TB, I desagree with you again Thats becoming pathological LOL.Indeed. quote: I have tried what you suggest, ...But I didn't give any numbers. Obviously what I meant was "use the minimum solar panel power that can charge your big battery". In other words, his optimal point for solar panel power is not the typical "optimum" that allows charging the battery for daily use. It is somewhere between being able to charge it in several hours for a day's use and not being able to charge it. Your apparent assumption that I was suggesting the latter limit implies a "negative initial perspective". Many people find such a negative approach offensive and unfriendly. My friendly advice to you is to approach people with a positive attitude (at least on the outside); you'll be significantly more successful both socially and professionally. You may even feel better yourself. On the other hand, if you feel you don't need any advice, just ignore my suggestion.
Guest Fadi
Well yes I need an advice I just misundertood you, because he gave the prize of 400 $ so with that prize you could not get a good system, so when you answered I tough you were suggesting a solar system that would cost less then that. This is why I desagreed with you. Because with a system less then 400 $ you would get crap, and even more if someone pay more for the battery pack then the solar pannel. To that point it is better to only buy batteries and charge them at home and bring them with him, then after he finished with it, then bring it back with him charge them and bring them the next time he goes there. That was what I was trying to say. Don't believe that I am trying to answer only to desagree with you, I just unsertood from your answer that you were asking him to invest less then 400 $ As for your advince, I am always ready to recieve some, and I accept them, so don't worry with that [ March 28, 2002, 07:16 AM: Message edited by: Domino ]
MosJan
When I asked the salesman if I could get a better battery instead of the standard OEM – at first he asked me if I was Jewish or not , than recommended to get a battery that will hold 40% more charge. My next question was, could I use any other sours of power to charge the battery – he told me that I can use the extra input in the terminal to charge the battery with generator, every time after I’m don camping I can put the solar penal witch is only 3’X3’ inside the camper and forget about it till my next visit. Just charge the battery for 30 minuets and the next day it will charge it’s self using the solar. Now I need to modify my generator - add a muffler to it, it’s way to loud, just in case this solar power would not work, I can still have power sours. Thanks for all of your suggestions. MosJan
i orderd one 60 watt solar module, 15 amp charge controller with meterscan, i can easily expand this system to 4 solar modules using this controller. 12V, 750cca, 100amp sealed/dray battery. the normal system has 75amp battrey. it's a do-it-yourself kit. All of the required parts are provided with instructions:( i can use the power to run DC lights, fans and small appliances. >>>> COMMON LOADS / POWER RANGE - in WATTS TV-50wLaptop 35 wstereo 15w / or use normal battreysComp. Flour. Lights 10 each total of 6in + 4out = 10~ 100w camera charger 50whiter/ac fan - 100w total of 325~450 WATTS - if i use all at the same time. The system i have orderd can suport all of this for hours 8 if i use all at the same time. if we only use lights it will work for somthing like 60 hours.
