After Karabakh, Pashinyan’s team is “lowering the bar” for Syunik – opinion – EADaily, September 6, 2024 – Politics News, Caucasus News

The Armenian authorities have begun to lower the level of Syunik, as they did with Artsakh. Everyone remembers the consequences of such a decline, said Arthur Khachikyan, a doctor of political sciences at Stanford University, commenting on the possibility of delegating the security of transport communications with Azerbaijan to a private company.

“These measures have nothing to do with guaranteeing the sovereignty of the country. This in itself means that we are not a sovereign country.

When Putin is going to meet with AliyevHe discusses the future of Armenia with him and says that he will inform the Armenian leadership about it; this already shows that we no longer have any significance. Issues affecting our immediate interests are decided behind our backs.” – said the expert in the program “Review”, reports VERELQ.

Khachikyan He stresses that the very fact of discussing the question of delegating these functions to a private company already means a renunciation of sovereignty:

“These intentions mean that we are starting to lower the bar for Syunik. It is also important to consider several factors here. First of all, which country will this company represent? And who will sign a contract with this company? If this contract is concluded with Armenia and Azerbaijan, this means that Azerbaijan already shares sovereignty with us in this territory.

In other words, if there are any disagreements with this company in the future, the Azerbaijani side has the same right to vote.”

Commenting on the authorities’ assurances that if an agreement is reached, the private company will also protect the part of communications that will pass through Azerbaijani territory, Khachikyan stressed that he had never heard statements from Baku about its desire to take such a step.

Formerly Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mnatsakan Safaryan He said that Armenia is considering the possibility of outsourcing the security of future transport communications with Azerbaijan to private security agencies (PSA).

“Yes, it is possible, but there is no further information at the moment.” – said the diplomat.

According to him, in this case the private security company should also protect the part of the communications that will pass through Azerbaijani territory. At the same time, Safaryan explained that Armenian border guards and customs officers will be present at the border.

Meanwhile, the Iranian ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani, Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Ferdowsi Hall of Yerevan State University, he stated that “the dreams and desires of SOME about Armenia, under various names, including the so-called “corridor” (i.e. through Syunik), will not come true.”:

“The territorial integrity of our neighbors is our red line. We promote the territorial integrity, national sovereignty and independence of Armenia. Armenia is our sincere neighbor and we are firmly ready to cooperate and deepen cooperation in all areas.”

Armenian Foreign Ministry: Third-party control over Azerbaijan-Nakhchivan highway is unacceptable

“Armenia excludes third-party control on the highway between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan in Zangezur.”

Oku.AzThese words were spoken by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, according to Armenian media reports.

“There is no discussion about creating the corridor and transferring control over it to a third party,” he said.

According to Mirzoian, both sides are discussing the option of involving private companies to solve problems related to the safety of citizens. In theory, they can accompany freight or passenger vehicles.

“In the event of a blockage of transport communications, the existence of a state-owned or private company owned by third parties along the entire railway line is unacceptable to us,” he said.

Armenia hands over to Azerbaijan completely agreed draft of peace treaty

Yerevan has handed over to Baku the completely agreed draft of a peace treaty and is waiting for Baku’s response, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has stated.

“Armenia has handed over to Azerbaijan the tenth edition of the draft peace treaty. This draft includes the entire agreed text, completely agreed articles or agreed parts of articles,” he said.

According to the top Armenian diplomat, Armenia and Azerbaijan have all the chances to sign a peace treaty soon. “We believe that there is a real opportunity to sign a peace agreement soon and open up a new page of lasting stability in the South Caucasus,” he stressed.

However, in his words, this agreement will not be able to resolve all the problems with Baku. “We will have to address other problems later if the sides agree to do so,” he added.

The senior Armenian diplomat also hailed the active political dialogue and the solid basis for cooperation between Armenia and the European Union countries, the ministry added.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have engaged in a series of bloody confrontations since both republics declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The two countries fought a war over the self-proclaimed republic of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020, and Azerbaijani forces clashed with the province’s separatist forces in 2023. The conflict ended with the dissolution of Nagorno-Karabakh’s government and the return of the province to Azerbaijani control.

Although situated inside Azerbaijani territory, Nagorno-Karabakh was governed by ethnic Armenian separatists until last year. Before the fall of the USSR, the province had ruled itself as an autonomous region within the Azerbaijan SSR.

No force is capable of disrupting Armenia-Iran land connection - Secretary of Security Council

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 9, ARMENPRESS. Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia, Armen Grigoryan, has met with Iranian Ambassador Mehdi Sobhani.

In a readout, the Iranian embassy said that Ambassador Sobhani “underscored Iran’s stance regarding the unchangeability of international borders, opposition to any geopolitical change, as well as its support to neighbors’ territorial integrity.”

Grigoryan thanked the Ambassador for Iran’s support for Armenia’s territorial integrity and its stance towards the unchangeability of international borders.

The Secretary of the Security Council underscored that the Armenia-Iran border is a border of peace, friendship and peaceful coexistence. Armenia attaches special importance to the relations with Iran and no force is capable of disrupting the land connection of Iran and Armenia.

Grigoryan said that any unblocking in Armenian territory will take place under Armenian control and sovereignty. He reiterated that Armenia opposes any unblocking in the logic of an extraterritorial corridor.

Bilateral relations, as well as regional issues, were also discussed.

Speaker of Parliament rebukes ‘absurd’ Azeri statements on imposing restrictions upon Armenian military

Speaker of Parliament rebukes ‘absurd’ Azeri statements on imposing restrictions upon Armenian military

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 9, ARMENPRESS. Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan has dismissed as ‘absurd’ statements made by Azerbaijani officials seeking to impose restrictions on the Armenian military armaments.

“I don’t comment on absurd things. Azerbaijan is acquiring massive amounts of weapons, and I want to understand against whom it is doing so, because in case of a war against Armenia one doesn’t need an arsenal of that size. We should understand whom Azerbaijan is planning to wage war against. While Armenia’s defense and military issues are our domestic affair,” Simonyan said.

Armenian Prime Minister accuses Azerbaijan and Russia of violating 2020 trilateral agreement

Armenian Prime Minister accuses Azerbaijan and Russia of violating 2020 trilateral agreement

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 10, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan has said that Armenia cannot be blamed for any unfulfillment of its obligations stemming from the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement, whereas the two other parties of the agreement – Azerbaijan and Russia – have violated it.

Pashinyan made the remarks at the Yerevan Dialogue forum.

As an example, the Armenian Prime Minister mentioned article 7 of the agreement, which says “Internally displaced persons and refugees shall return to the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent areas under the supervision of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.”

“As you can see, after November 9, 2020, when the Russian President, the Azerbaijani President, and myself signed this document, not only didn’t the Armenian refugees of Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent regions return, but the entire Nagorno-Karabakh got depopulated of Armenians as a result of the ethnic cleansing that happened one year ago,” Pashinyan said.

PM Pashinyan mentioned article 8, which says “The Parties shall exchange prisoners of war, hostages and other detained persons, and dead bodies.”

He said that Azerbaijan is still holding Armenian prisoners of war and other captives. “This provision of the November 9 trilateral statement hasn’t been fulfilled either. None of the colleagues has any grounds to accuse Armenia of not fulfilling any of the terms of the 9 November trilateral statement. As you can see, Armenia or any independent and objective international observer has the grounds to say that our other colleagues in the trilateral statement, have at least not entirely fulfilled their obligations.”

India Highlights the Importance of a Transport Corridor Through Iran, Armenia, and Georgia - Samir Saran

At the international "Yerevan Dialogue" forum on September 10, Samir Saran, President of India's Observer Research Foundation (ORF), emphasized the strategic significance of a new transport route connecting India with Georgia and the Black Sea region via Iran and Armenia.

According to Saran, this transport corridor is critically important for India, and its role will only increase in the future. He highlighted the key role of the South Caucasus as a bridge between the North and South, East and West.

Saran specifically noted Armenia’s potential as a possible transport hub for multimodal routes.

India's Observer Research Foundation (ORF), known for its influence on Indian policy-making, participated in organizing the "Yerevan Dialogue" forum, which is taking place on September 10-11 in Armenia’s capital. ORF provides analytical insights to the Indian government and business community.

Earlier, BMG reported that Armenia, India, and Iran are launching a trade route with Russia and the EU via Georgia. This new route will significantly enhance Armenia’s trade potential, providing reliable access to Indian and Southeast Asian markets.

The proposed route is expected to run from the Indian port of Mumbai through Iran’s Chabahar and Armenia, with further connections to Georgia or Russia. This will facilitate the transport of goods from the Persian Gulf and India to the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) via an optimized path. For Iran and India, this route is especially important as a means to diversify supply chains, bypassing more complex maritime routes.

Armenia interested in buying more ATAGS artillery systems from India

Armenia interested in buying more ATAGS artillery systems from India

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. Armenia is interested in buying additional ATAGS 155mm artillery systems from India, Sputnik Armenia news agency reported citing Indian Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses Director Sujan Chinoy.

“ATAGS is highly maneuverable,” Chinoy told Sputnik Armenia. “They are made in India and have been highly successful. The Armenian side bought six of these systems and was satisfied.”

Chinoy mentioned Armenia’s previous acquisition of the Swathi Weapon Locating Radar systems and Pinaka MRLS.

He said that Armenia has potential to develop its defense industry, which is now focused on startups. “Armenia has three such companies, which isn’t few given the country’s size and population. India has 120 such companies. Therefore Yerevan and Delhi can establish active cooperation in the area of military technologies, especially in issues concerning startups,” Chinoy said.

Earlier media reports said that Armenia ordered the ATAGS systems back in 2022 and received the first batch in August 2023.

According to the Indian Defense Ministry, Armenia bought $600,000,000 worth of armaments from India in 2024-2025 fiscal year.

Kocharian To Again Stand Trial

Սեպտեմբեր 13, 2024

Armenia - Former President Robert Kocharian at a news conference in Yerevan, September 28, 2022.

Armenia’s Court of Cassation has ordered a new trial of former President Robert Kocharian more than three years after he was acquitted of coup charges rejected by him as politically motivated.

Kocharian, his former chief of staff Armen Gevorgian and two retired army generals were prosecuted in connection with a 2008 post-election violence in Yerevan. A district court cleared them of the “overthrow of the constitutional order” in April 2021 ten days after the Constitutional Court ruled that their indictment under a relevant article of the Criminal Code breached the Armenian constitution.

Prosecutors appealed against the acquittal, saying that they must be allowed to charge the defendants with abuse of power also related to the events of March 2008. The Court of Appeals upheld the acquittal, leading the prosecutors to take their case to the higher Court of Cassation. The latter in turn appealed to the Constitutional Court in March this year.

The Constitutional Court ruled in July that Armenia’s Code of Procedural Justice allows the prosecutors to bring a different accusation stemming from the use of force against antigovernment protesters who clashed with security forces in Yerevan in March 2008. Eight protesters and two police personnel were killed in those clashes.

Citing that ruling, the Court of Cassation ordered a court of first instance to start a new trial on the high-profile case. Kocharian’s lawyers did not immediately react to the decision made on Thursday and publicized on Friday. One of the lawyers, Hayk Alumian, earlier accused the Constitutional Court of enabling the Armenian authorities to resume Kocharian’s “political persecution.”

Kocharian, who now leads Armenia’s main opposition alliance, was also charged with bribery before the start of his first trial in 2019. He strongly denied that accusation as well. The 70-year-old ex-president as well as Gevorgian continued to stand trial for the alleged bribery after the presiding judge, Anna Danibekian, threw out the coup case in April 2021.

The trial ended without a verdict in December 2023, with Kocharian invoking the statute of limitations that expired in May 2023. For the same reason, he will not go to jail if he is convicted in connection with the 2008 crackdown.

The Constitutional Court paved the way for Kocharian’s new trial one week after Danibekian was removed from the bench because of her handling of the high-profile trial. Armenia’s judicial oversight body led by a political ally of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian ousted the judge at the request of the Ministry of Justice.

Kocharian, who is highly critical of Armenia’s current government, was first arrested in July 2018 shortly after the “velvet revolution” that brought Pashinian to power. He was set free on bail in June 2020.

Pashinian was the main speaker at the 2008 protests marred by the deadly violence. He spent nearly two years in prison for his role in what the former Armenian authorities described as a plot to violently overthrow them.

United and strong Diaspora is Armenia's most powerful ally - President

United and strong Diaspora is Armenia's most powerful ally - President

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 17, ARMENPRESS. The Diaspora is the wealth of our country and our citizens, with its diversity, role, and opportunities. Accordingly, the Republic of Armenia is the home and refuge of Armenians worldwide, regardless of time, authorities, or internal and external developments.

Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan said during the opening ceremony of the second Global Armenian Summit, noting that such events are good opportunities to meet, address the challenges we face, and work together to find solutions.

“Every chance to engage with our compatriots in the Diaspora is crucial for understanding the issues that concern and excite us. It is also an excellent opportunity to discuss the current challenges facing our country, ways to overcome them, the reforms being implemented in various sectors, and issues related to the progress and development of our nation," Khachaturyan said.

According to the President, we are in the ceaseless course of time and events happening around us, witnessing rapid developments and changes in technology, science, communication, and even global systems.

"These changes pose new challenges and require new solutions and principles. Sometimes, it becomes imperative to revise traditional relationships and work procedures. In this context, a united and strong diaspora is Armenia's most powerful ally,''said Khachaturyan.

Khachaturyan reminded that, in meetings with compatriots from the Diaspora, he often emphasizes that they are ambassadors of Armenia to the world. They represent modern Armenia, its culture, traditions, and history, while being worthy and responsible citizens of their own countries.

The President of Armenia noted that the country is currently at a pivotal point in history, facing a period of radical changes, new relationships, and opportunities. Despite existing problems, Armenia remains committed to ushering in an era of peace.

"We have embarked on implementing comprehensive reforms aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, increasing the country’s defense capabilities, creating a competitive and attractive economic environment, establishing justice, and improving the quality of life and well-being of our citizens. These reforms are the foundation on which we are building a safer, fairer, more prosperous, inclusive, and powerful Armenia."

"Today, we face challenges that test our determination, strength, and flexibility. Your involvement is extremely important, whether through cultural initiatives, educational programs, or investments. Believe that distance cannot diminish our common bond. Your voice is heard, your actions are significant, and together we can build an Armenia that reflects our collective aspirations," concluded the President of Armenia.

Baku Adamant In Rejecting Pashinian’s Offer

Սեպտեմբեր 17, 2024

image.png
Azerbaijan - The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry building in Baku.

Azerbaijan continued to reject on Tuesday Armenia’s repeated proposals to sign an interim peace deal that would leave out their remaining disagreements.

“The Armenian side proposes to conclude a peace agreement based on the provisions agreed upon to date,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman, Aykhan Hajizade, told the Azerbaijani publication Report. “However, the Azerbaijani side considers such an approach unacceptable and has made this clear. There is a rule that a document is not considered agreed until all its points are agreed."

“In order for the peace agreement to be sustainable and successful, it is necessary to settle the contentious issues remaining in a number of areas,” he said without disclosing them.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian first publicly made the proposal late last month. He has reiterated it on a number of occasions since then despite its repeated rejections by Baku. According to him, the two sides fully agree on the preamble and 13 of the 16 articles of a draft peace treaty discussed by them.

Pashinian insisted on the proposal during a visit to Georgia on Monday. He said Baku and Yerevan should sign the incomplete peace deal, establish diplomatic relations and “continue discussions” on the remaining sticking points.

Armenian opposition leaders claim that Pashinian is desperate to sign such a document in hopes of misleading the domestic public and increasing his chances of holding on to power. They say Azerbaijan will avoid doing that as long as it can bully him into making unilateral concessions.

Baku also makes the signing of the peace treaty conditional on a change of Armenia’s constitution which it says contains territorial claims to Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev reportedly reiterated this precondition on Monday in a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Blinken also spoke with Pashinian by phone on September 12. The U.S. State Department reported few details of those conversations.

“We continue to support the efforts of both countries to reach a durable and dignified peace agreement,” the department spokesman, Matthew Miller, told a news briefing later on Monday. He said Washington is ready to host more Armenian-Azerbaijani talks for that purpose.

The Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers most recently held a trilateral meeting with Blinken in July.

Yerevan Again Rules Out Extraterritorial Corridor For Azerbaijan

Սեպտեմբեր 18, 2024

image.png
Armenia - Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian speaks at the Second World Armenian Summit, September 18, 2024.

Armenia must have full control over any road or railway that would connect Azerbaijan to its Nakhichevan exclave through Armenian territory, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian insisted on Wednesday.

He seemed to respond to Baku’s latest accusations that Yerevan is not complying it with a relevant provision of the Russian-brokered ceasefire that stopped the 2020 war in Nagorno-Karabakh. It requires the Armenian side to “guarantee the security of transport links” between Nakhichevan and the rest of Azerbaijan passing through Armenia’s Syunik province.

An Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman said earlier this week that Baku will use Iranian territory for that purpose if Yerevan continues to oppose the opening of such a corridor. Iran has already served as the main transit for Azerbaijan-Nakhichevan traffic for over three decades. Last October, Azerbaijani and Iranian officials broke ground on a new Iranian transit road bypassing Armenia.

Pashinian said that Armenia is ready to open such transport links for Nakhichevan “under the same conditions as the Islamic Republic of Iran gives Azerbaijan.”

“Moreover, we do not rule out certain simplifications of [border] procedures,” he told an Armenia-Diaspora conference held in Yerevan.

The premier stressed that this must not compromise Armenia’s sovereignty or territorial integrity in any way.

Pashinian said on August 31 that his government is ready to let a foreign company provide “additional security” along the would-be transport links for Nakhichevan. His foreign minister, Ararat Mirzoyan, clarified afterwards that the company would “escort passengers or cargo,” rather than replace Armenian border and customs officers.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry indicated that such an arrangement would not satisfy Baku. Azerbaijani officials have said that traffic through the “Zangezur corridor” should be exempt from Armenian border controls.

Syunik is the only Armenian region bordering Iran. The latter is strongly opposed to the opening of the extraterritorial corridor sought by Azerbaijan as well as Turkey, fearing a loss of its common border with Armenia.

Danish-Armenian history on Armenia’s National Day

Armenia celebrates its National Day on September 21, marking its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Dive into the day’s political and social meaning, and learn how Armenian and Danish history intersect,

Christina Kronback
Sep 23, 2024

Armenia celebrates its National Day on September 21, marking its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. This day holds deep meaning for Armenians as it commemorates their nation’s path to sovereignty after decades of Soviet rule.

The path to freedom
In the late 1980s, as Soviet control weakened, Armenia sought independence. A referendum was held on September 21 1991, with over 99% of voters choosing independence. This marked Armenia’s official departure from the Soviet Union, and the newly formed Republic of Armenia was internationally recognized shortly afterwards. Independence was a big step towards restoring Armenia’s cultural and national identity.

Danish-Armenian bond
To most Armenians, Karen Jeppe and Maria Jacobsen are well known names. Both were Danish missionaries and helped Armenian refugees. Their work was crucial during the Armenian genocide (1915-1923).

Karen spent long periods in Armenia from 1903 to 1927. She established orphanages and worked to protect both women and children. Karen passed away in 1935 and was buried in Aleppo, Syria, where she had continued her humanitarian work.

Maria Jacobsen started working in Armenia in 1907. She is known for documenting the Armenian genocide in her diaries, covering the years 1907–1919. Maria was also renowned for caring for the orphaned Armenian children and for founding an orphanage in Lebanon.

Both women are remembered for their extraordinary contributions during a time of suffering for the Armenian people.

Celebrations across Armenia
Armenia’s National Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm. In the capital, Yerevan, the day features official speeches, flag-raising ceremonies, and military parades. Cultural performances, traditional music, and dance highlight Armenia’s rich heritage. The President of Armenia typically addresses the nation, speaking of the country’s progress and future.

Among the cultural highlights is the traditional Kochari dance, a folk dance performed in a circle, symbolising unity. The rhythmic sounds of the dhol, a traditional double-headed drum, set the beat for dancers. In contrast, Rabiz music, a popular blend of Armenian folk and modern influences, is often played at celebrations.

Many Armenians also take the day to enjoy lavash, the traditional Armenian flatbread, which is an important part of the country’s culinary heritage. Additionally, Armenia’s centuries old tradition of carpet weaving is often showcased, with detalied designs that reflect the nation’s history and culture.

It’s a day of national pride, where families and friends come together to celebrate the strength of the Armenian people.

New Trial Of Kocharian Starts In His Absence

Սեպտեմբեր 23, 2024

image.png
Armenia -- Former President Robert Kocharian attends a court hearing in Yerevan, March 3, 2021.

A court in Yerevan opened a fresh trial of Robert Kocharian on Monday despite the former Armenian president’s absence from the country and the fact that prosecutors have still not brought new charges against him and three other defendants.

The charges will stem from a 2008 post-election unrest in Yerevan. Kocharian, his former chief of staff Armen Gevorgian and two retired army generals were already prosecuted in connection with it before being cleared of “overthrow of the constitutional order” in April 2021. They were acquitted by another court of first instance ten days after Armenia’s Constitutional Court ruled that the accusation, rejected by them as politically motivated, is unconstitutional.

Prosecutors appealed against the acquittal, saying that they must be allowed to charge the defendants with abuse of power also related to the events of March 2008. The Court of Cassation, the country’s highest body of criminal justice, in turn appealed to the Constitutional Court in March this year.

The Constitutional Court ruled in July that the prosecutors can bring a different accusation stemming from the use of force against antigovernment protesters who clashed with security forces in Yerevan in March 2008. Eight protesters and two police personnel were killed in those clashes. Citing that ruling, the Court of Cassation ordered the new trial.

Kocharian and his lawyers did not attend the opening session of the trial. The ex-president’s office said later in the day that he travelled abroad on September 18 and was not notified about the date of the first court hearing. It said he will return to Armenia in case of receiving a “proper notification.”

It also emerged during the hearing that the prosecutors have not formally filed the new accusations sought by them since 2021. They will do so after “overcoming some legal procedures,” a trial prosecutor, Hayk Hovannisian, said without elaborating. He also told reporters that the four defendants can be indicted again even though the statute of limitations for the crime attributed to them has expired.

One of the defendants present at the hearing, former Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian, insisted that the criminal case is part of the Armenian government’s continuing “political persecution” of Kocharian and his associates. The prosecutors deny any political motives behind the case that was opened shortly after Nikol Pashinian swept to power in 2018.

Pashinian was the main speaker at the 2008 protests marred by the deadly violence. He spent nearly two years in prison for his role in what the former Armenian authorities described as a plot to violently overthrow them.

Armenian Protest Leader Announces Renewed Push For Regime Change

Armenia - Archbishop Bagrat Galstanian meets supporters at the Karen Demirchian Sports and Concert Complex, Yerevan, September 22, 2024.

Archbishop Bagrat Galstanian vowed to resume next week street protests aimed at toppling Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian as he gathered thousands of supporters at a concert hall in Yerevan on Sunday.

Galstanian said that his anti-government movement sparked by Pashinian’s territorial concessions to Azerbaijan is entering an “intensive and consistent phase.”

“We must form a new government which will be merit-based and will become a government of unity,” he told the audience that included senior representatives of Armenia’s main opposition groups.

Galstanian went on to announce that his next rally in Yerevan’s central Republic Square will take place on October 2. He did not say whether it will be followed by the kind of daily protests which he held in the Armenian capital in May and June. He urged supporters to gear up for a “patient struggle” for regime change.

His opposition-backed movement was generated by protests that erupted in Armenia’s northern Tavush province in April following Pashinian’s decision to cede four local border areas to Azerbaijan. Galstanian, who headed the provincial diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, quickly emerged as their leader.

After failing to scuttle the land transfer, the outspoken archbishop shifted the protests to Yerevan in early May to demand Pashinian’s resignation. His rallies held there attracted tens of thousands of people. The most recent of them took place on June 17.

Pashinian alleged in May that foreign intelligence “agents” are involved in the protests. He did not name them. Some of his political allies branded Galstanian as a Russian spy. The 53-year-old clergyman, who also holds Canadian citizenship, laughed off the allegations.

Lawmakers representing Armenia’s Civil Contract party expressed confidence last month that fresh protests planned by Galstanian will also fail to unseat Pashinian and his government.

Pashinian Talks Global Peace At UN As Aliyev Again Threatens Armenia

Սեպտեմբեր 24, 2024

UN - Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian addresses the UN General Assembly in New York, September 23, 2024.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian pledged to help make the world a better place when he addressed the UN General Assembly in New York late on Monday hours after Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made fresh threats of military action against Armenia.

Speaking in Azerbaijan’s newly elected parliament fully controlled by his regime, Aliyev said he will continue a military buildup due to what he called “revanchist tendencies” in Armenia.

“We are reinforcing our positions on the presumable border [with Armenia] because any provocation can be expected from Armenia at any time,” he said. “Armenia and any country standing behind it must understand that it is not possible to talk to us in the language of blackmail and we are ready and able to give any response.”

Pashinian did not comment on these veiled threats or the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict in general in a speech at a global “summit of the future” held during an ongoing session of the UN General Assembly. He discussed instead “today’s global crisis” and “prerequisites of a good future” for the world. He urged the international community to “create positive narratives … regardless of whether they exist at the moment or not.”

“My party adopted [during Armenia’s 2021 parliamentary election campaign] the slogan ‘There is a future’ under the conditions when it seemed that there was no hope for optimism in our region,” Pashinian said in English. “Now this happens globally. And at this Summit of the Future, I want to voice that belief of ‘there is a future’ and by doing this I want to have my portion of contribution.”

Addressing the General Assembly later on Monday, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister said Armenia should move quickly to eliminate the remaining obstacles to peace with Azerbaijan. For his part, Aliyev accused Yerevan of dragging out Armenian-Azerbaijani peace talks. He reaffirmed his rejection of Pashinian’s proposal to sign an interim peace deal that would leave out the remaining disagreements of the two sides.

Baku also makes the signing of an Armenian-Azerbaijani peace treaty conditional on a change of Armenia’s constitution which it says contains territorial claims to Azerbaijan. Aliyev renewed this demand in April after forcing Pashinian to hand over four disputed border areas to Azerbaijan.

Armenian opposition leaders strongly condemned that unilateral concession, saying that Pashinian’s appeasement policy will only encourage Baku to make other demands to the Armenian side, rather than bring peace.

Kars-Gyumri railway can become new gate for Armenia to Europe, for Türkiye to Central Asia, to China – Deputy FM

Kars-Gyumri railway can become new gate for Armenia to Europe, for Türkiye to Central Asia, to China – Deputy FM

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 30, ARMENPRESS. Armenia is pleased by the “positive dynamics” in the normalization process with Türkiye and is ready for “full normalization” of relations, the Armenian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vahan Kostanyan told Anadolu news agency.

The comment came after last week’s meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New York City.

“We are happy with the positive dynamics that we have on Armenia-Türkiye normalization, but we do believe that there is much more that can be done, especially when it comes to the full normalization of relations and opening of the border and the establishment of diplomatic relations,” Kostanyan told Anadolu on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Kostanyan described the talks between Pashinyan and Erdogan as "quite positive," with both leaders showing a "readiness to understand each other’s positions."

He noted previous agreements on issues such as the opening of the border for third-country citizens and diplomats -- an arrangement reached in July 2022 during the fourth round of normalization talks in Vienna.

“We reconfirmed, once again that Armenia’s side is ready. We did all the infrastructure and technical work preparation needed, and we are ready to proceed to realize the agreement,” said the senior diplomat.

Kostanyan expressed optimism about future cooperation, specifically in reopening the Kars-Gyumri railway, which he believes would provide economic benefits not only to Armenia and Türkiye but also to the broader region.

After the meeting in New York, Erdogan noted Pashinyan's "positive approach" toward resolving long-standing issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“We know that many of the logistical chains right now are blocked, or are not properly operating, and Kars-Gyumri railway can become a new gate for Armenia to Europe, for Türkiye to Central Asia, to China,” he said.

“Much more can be done, and it can be done in a more speedy manner,” he said about normalization of relations.

“And the message that we are always trying to pass to our different Turkish counterparts is that the time to act is now. We don't need to miss any additional time,” he added.

Kostanyan also spoke about Armenia’s recognition of Palestine.

Kostanyan said the decision to recognize Palestine aligns with Armenia’s longstanding support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Taking into account the developments in the Middle East. We did believe, and we do believe, that it was the right time to recognize the state of Palestine,” said Kostanyan. “With this step that Armenia took, we believe, it can support stability and peace in the Middle East.”

Asked about the growing demand for reform of the UN, he said it is “crystal clear” to everyone that the multilateral system and the world order is “not properly working right now.”

“There is the urgency to reform the multilateral system in order to reestablish world order which will be based on rules that will be respected by everyone,” he added.

We are the ones who must guarantee our safety – Pashinyan urges not to rely on foreign guarantees

We are the ones who must guarantee our safety – Pashinyan urges not to rely on foreign guarantees

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 2, ARMENPRESS. Armenia must ensure its security not only through its soldiers and army but also through the policies it pursues, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated during a question-and-answer session in the National Assembly.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the Armenian government is implementing a balanced foreign policy, not a complementary one.

Addressing regional matters, Pashinyan remarked: "When the decision about our participation in the 3+3 format was being made, and we chose to participate, that decision faced serious criticism. However, I can now confidently say that participating in discussions on the 3+3 platform was the right choice, as it highlights the regional dimension of our foreign policy."

Speaking about relations with Iran, the Prime Minister noted that these relations are stable. "These ties are not the result of a political decision. Rather, the political decision is a consequence of this stability, which emphasizes and strengthens the context of our relationship. The same can be said about our relations with Georgia," he added.

Addressing the question of how security issues will be resolved, he said: "We haven't noticed that, during a significant part of our independence, we've placed the burden of foreign policy on the soldier’s shoulders, just as we've placed the burden of governance on the soldier's shoulders. That's not how it should be.  There is only one security guarantee, and that is peace—having normal, stable relations with your neighbors. There is no other security guarantee."

"There is also a lot of talk about foreign guarantees. But after all this, we should no longer believe in them. We must guarantee our own security, not just with soldiers and the army, but through our politics, economy, socio-psychology, words, and our ability to resist provocations," Pashinyan emphasized.
