The Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), which has long earned a reputation in the country as a fraudulent organization, is going through bad times. The reason is that Armenia’s population, which started protests two months ago in order to change the grave situation in the country, now protests against the leadership of the Church.

Since its establishment, the AAC has literally been inviolable, and today the Church is an autonomous structure within Armenia, which adheres to its own laws and influences the lives of Armenians.

However, the country’s population is obviously tired of the AAC’s current leadership, and therefore, people protest in Yerevan, demanding the resignation of the Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II.

The Armenian believers have enough reasons to dislike their Catholicos. Some time ago, at the opening ceremony of a church in Armenia – the country that ranks first in the world in terms of the number of churches – Karekin II was asked whether it is right that churches are being built non-stop while the people in Armenia are starving. The Catholicos replied to the question cynically saying “people will satisfy their hunger through spiritual values.”

YEREVAN, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Armenia's ruling party won a stunning majority in its capital Yerevan's City Council elections Sunday, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) said.

My Step Alliance, which includes Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's Civil Contract party, garnered around 81 percent of the vote.

This was Pashinyan's first electoral test since the former journalist and opposition MP rose up to the current post following weeks of mass protests that forced long-time leader Serzh Sargsyan to step down.

Prosperous Armenia Party and Light -- an alliance of parties led by Justice Minister Artak Zeynalyan -- came in second and third, obtaining 7 percent and 5 percent of the votes, respectively.

As a result, former comedian Hayk Marutyan, who has been leading My Step Alliance, is now poised to become Yerevan's next mayor. Marutyan was an early supporter of Pashinyan when the latter started his protest movement in April.

According to the CEC, around 370,000 voters, or 43.65 percent, of around 850,000 people of electoral age cast their ballots on Sunday.

(Armradio) – Karabakh must not be a part of Azerbaijan, unless one wants to trigger a new genocide of Armenian people, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says.

Addressing the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, PM Pashinyan said “the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict continues to prevail on our foreign policy agenda.”

“The status and security of the Republic of Artsakh is an absolute priority of the Republic of Armenia in the negotiation process,” he added.

According to the Prime Minister, “any attempt to resolve the conflict through military means represents a direct threat to the regional security, democracy and human rights.”

“Armenia will continue its constructive engagement in the peaceful resolution of the conflict within the format of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs, which has the only internationally recognized mandate to deal with the conflict,” Pashinyan stated.

Azerbaijan should change its behavior of disrespect towards the negotiations and abandon “the idea of any military solution and implement all the previous agreements. Furthermore, if Azerbaijan is truly committed to the peace process it should start talking to the main subject of this conflict – Nagorno-Karabakh,” he added.

“Azerbaijan declares on every occasion that Karabakh should be a part of its territory. At the same time it announces that it will not negotiate with Nagorno Karabakh. The question is how Azerbaijan can make a claim over Nagorno-Karabakh without even speaking to NK? Is that possible? This is possible only if Azerbaijani government wants the territory and not the people,” PM Pashinyan said.

“Thus, it becomes obvious that the intention of Azerbaijani leadership is to cleanse Armenians from Karabakh, like they did in Nakhijevan. This entitles Nagorno-Karabakh to make the argument, that to be a part of Azerbaijan for Karabakh means to be totally exterminated. Hence Karabakh must not be a part of Azerbaijan, unless one wants to trigger a new genocide of Armenian people,” Nikol Pashinayn stressed.

He reiterated that “the conflict can and should be settled only through mutual compromises by all sides, in an atmosphere conducive to peace and not war.”

Armenia's leader calls rally to protest 'counterrevolution'

YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) — Armenia's prime minister led his supporters during a rally outside parliament Tuesday to protest what he called a "counterrevolution" by his political opponents.

Nikol Pashinian took office in May after spearheading weeks of protests that forced the resignation of his predecessor. He has pushed for an early parliamentary election, an effort to unseat foes who maintain a parliamentary majority.

Those political foes responded Tuesday by passing a bill intended to disrupt Pashinian's plan to disband parliament and call a new election for December. The bill must be signed by the president to become law.

"We made the decision not because we don't want to face early elections, but because we can't accept pressuring lawmakers," parliamentary speaker Ara Babloian said.

Pashinian called on his supporters to protest the move and several thousand quickly gathered outside parliament. Pro-Pashinian lawmakers blocked the exits to prevent his opponents from leaving the building.

In a fiery speech at the rally, Pashinian assailed the Republican Party and its allies for what he described as the "counterrevolutionary" move.

"They have waged a war against their people," he said.

Pashinian told his supporters he would urge President Armen Sarkissian not to sign the bill into law.

He also declared that he decided to fire Cabinet members from the two parties that joined the Republican Party in Tuesday's vote.

After speaking to the demonstrators, Pashinian went inside the parliament building for talks with lawmakers. Some of the people attending the rally tried to break into parliament, shouting insults at the Republicans and their allies.

Pashinian's predecessor, Serzh Sargsyan, shifted into the premier's seat in April after serving two presidential terms, a move seen as a maneuver to avoid term limits and stay in power. Pashinian, a former journalist, led a wave of protests fueled by public anger over the widespread poverty, high unemployment and rampant corruption that flourished under the old government, forcing Sargsyan to step down.

Protesters filled the streets of Yerevan for the first time since the spring, as Armenia experienced its most serious political crisis since the country's new government took power in May. In a move Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called the “counter-revolution,” his erstwhile allies abandoned him and backed the former ruling party in an effort to block him from holding early elections.

Following the landslide victory of his party in September 23 municipal elections in Yerevan, Pashinyan began an effort to move up the dates of parliamentary elections to December. His party still represents only a small minority in the National Assembly, and new elections would appear likely to give Pashinyan a much stronger representation.

"Political events have shown that we should hold snap parliamentary elections very quickly because political uncertainties are preventing new investments in our economy,” Pashinyan saidthe day following the Yerevan elections, in which his slate got 81 percent of the vote. “I believe that these elections also showed that the current parliament does not in fact have a mandate, because the parliamentary forces have collected very few votes."

On October 2, Pashinyan's foes struck back. Members of parliament, led by the formerly ruling Republican Party of Armenia, made it known that they planned to hold a vote the following day on a law that would change what would happen in the case that parliament was unable to hold sessions. The technical rule change appeared to be a ploy to prevent Pashinyan from gathering protesters to block parliament from meeting, and thus forcing new elections.

Pashinyan responded by threatening a reprise of the protests in the spring that propelled him to power. In a Facebook broadcast, he told supporters: “I have talked to the Republican party and urged them to not make the counterrevolution official. If I don’t hear from them by evening I need you to come out to the streets.”

In response, the backers of the law sped up the vote and held it the evening of October 2.

The legislation was initiated by Arpine Hovhannisyan, a Republican MP, and backed by members of the Prosperous Armenia and Armenian Revolutionary Federation parties. The latter two parties had formed a minority government with Pashinyan's Yelk bloc, but following the vote Pashinyan fired the seven ministers in the government from those parties.

Ahead of the vote, two Yelk members – Lena Nazaryan and Hayk Konjoryan – attempted to disrupt it by taking away the electronic “cards” that MPs use to vote from other parties' members. The vote was ultimately held by a show of hands, and the session was not broadcast, as is standard procedure.

“This gang is trying to take Armenians' rights away from them,” said another Yelk MP, Sasun Mikaelyan, following the vote. “This is not a vote, it's a robbery.”

Following news that the vote had succeeded, people heeded Pashinyan's calls and went to the streets in the thousands. Some supporters marched to the parliament and blocked the exits, while others formed roadblocks along the streets surrounding the parliament building, checking all cars going in and out to prevent MPs from leaving the scene. Some protesters reprised the “Icelandic clap” that had become a signature of the spring protests. Other, smaller protests erupted in the second city of Gyumri and other parts of the country.

Pashinyan addressed the crowd at the parliament repeatedly throughout the evening. He urged them to remain peaceful, announced that he intended to fire the ministers and governors from the rebellious parties, and called on President Armen Sarkissian – the nominal head of state who must sign legislation for it to become law – to use his veto. He called for elections to be held “in late November or early December.”

He also said he intended to resign in an attempt to force a resolution of the crisis. “After the firings of the ministers goes into effect, I’m going to resign,” he told the crowd. According to current law, parliament has to elect a new prime minister within eight days. If they fail twice to pick a new premier, parliament will be disbanded. “If they choose a new one, then they chose a new one, if they don’t elect a new prime minister then we will have to have snap elections.”

Eventually he headed into the building to conduct negotiations with Ara Babloyan, the Republican speaker of parliament. Past midnight, he emerged again and told the crowd: "It was a cordial, friendly atmosphere. We drank coffee, and talked. The conversation was not conclusive.”

Sasna Dzrer Member Arayik Khandoyan Dies; Heart Attack the Apparent Cause

Artsakh war veteran Arayik Khandoyan (aka Lone Wolf), a member of the Sasna Dzrer group that seized a Yerevan police building in 2016, died today after apparently suffering a heart attack.

Hetq received the news from Khandoyan’s compatriot Varuzhan Avetisyan, who learnt of Khandoayn’s death from friends who had gathered in a Gyumri hospital where Khandoyan passed away.

Khandoyan was released from detention on August 17 while his trial, and that of other Sasna Dzrer members, was ongoing.

Armenia’s Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has launched a criminal case regarding the construction of the Yerevan private home belonging to former Syunik Provincial Governor Surik Khachatryan.

The PGO investigated the matter on the basis of an August 24 Hetq article stating that while Surik Khachatryan has been building a three-story house, on 2,000 square meters of land owned by him in Yerevan, for more than 10 years, he got a construction license only recently, on June 8, 2018.

The investigation revealed that Yerevan Municipality employees were lax when following the appropriate construction laws. Charges of “abuse of official authority” have been filed.

Armenia Set to Have Early Parliamentary Elections
Pashinyan Not Elected Prime Minister in a Second Round of Elections

Acting PM Nikol Pashinyan did not receive enough votes to be elected as a prime minister in a special session of the National Assembly on November 1, a result which Pashinyan had been hoping for and which will lead to snap parliamentary elections.

53 members of parliament out of 105 participated in the vote. There was no vote against or for while 13 MPs voted abstained.

This new “non election” is the second step in the process of triggering snap parliamentary elections which has been the main item on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s agenda since gaining the post following the “Velvet Revolution’ past spring. Pashinyan hopes to form a National Assembly that is more “in line with Armenia’s correct political realities.”

Per Armenia’s 2015 constitution, snap parliamentary elections are automatically called for in the case where the sitting prime minister resigns and the National Assembly fails to elect a new prime minister during two consecutive sessions.

For this purpose, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan resigned on October 16.

Extraordinary elections will be held no earlier than 30 days and no later than 45 days after the dissolution of the parliament.

Pashinyan announced to journalists that the extraordinary elections will take place on December 9.

Following parliamentary elections, Pashinyan hopes to be elected as prime minister for a five-year term.

YEREVAN, November 9. /ARKA/. The Armenian government will draw a map of the worldwide Armenians in order to assess the overall potential of the nation, the acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said a meeting in Astana with representatives of the Armenian community of Kazakhstan.

“This is difficult, but important work. We need to consolidate the full potential of our people,” Pashinyan said, according to a press release distributed by his press service.

He said his impression from a series of meetings with members of the Armenian Diaspora in many countries is that Armenians are really a powerful nation with strong potential, which, unfortunately, is not used.

According to him, the ‘velvet revolution’ took place not only in Armenia, but also among the Armenians of the world. “We must together strengthen our homeland that must become the number one guarantor of the existence of Armenians,’ Pashinyan said.

"Our main omission was that no common goals were formulated and different parts of our people did not act together. We need to concentrate all our forces to achieve a single national goal. I think the most important feature of the ‘velvet revolution’ is that we have found new energy, new inspiration to turn Armenia into a country that is able to protect itself, develop, become attractive for investment," Pashinyan stressed.

The meeting was attended by Armenians not only from Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, but also by Armenians located hundreds of kilometers away. Also a delegation of Armenians from Uzbekistan was present.

Pashinyan: This is a war against Armenia

"This is a declared war against the Republic of Armenia," Armenian Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a live broadcast on Facebook commenting to the wiretapping phone conversation between him and the NSS Director leaked on Youtube on Wednesday.

"It's done for a simple reason. The corrupt system sees the circle around it getting narrower, something we had promised, and the promise will be realized step-by-step, immediately after the parliamentary election, and nobody will escape. All corrupt individuals will be held accountable on behalf of the people and the mandate of the people, because in essence, these conversations are published for their own salvation and for the salvation of the corrupt system. I have said before, and now I keep insisting that this is a war declared against the Republic of Armenia and a crushing defeat is expected for those who provoked this war," Nikol Pashinyan said.

He called on the citizens on December 9, regardless of the weather conditions, even if there’s snowstorm and flood, to go to the polling stations and vote for the "My Step" alliance.

"I want to remind you that this is first of all Prime Minister's elections. I hope to get a strong mandate from the citizens of Armenia to fight against corruption, to get every cent stolen from the people back, and finally to fight this war against the Republic of Armenia and the people of Armenia," the Acting Prime Minister said.
Nikol Pashinyan also said that on September 12, he touched upon the wiretapping at the National Assembly, and in that speech, he provided twice as much information as published in the material.

"The conversation is not complete. There are episodes which I have referred to during the NA speech and they have been cut and removed. Particularly, the part when the director of the National Security Service told me that the judge was scared, and I said, what it means, the judge is scared, the NSS is obliged to secure the judge's security and independence if you cannot ensure that, then you have a wrong way of working," he said.

The Acting Prime Minister also said that the actions of the head of the National Security Service and the Special Investigative Service director were within the scope of their official functions.
