MosJan
ARMENIAN PRODUCTS’ SHIPMENT PRICES GONE UPYesterday, January 18, ‘Apaven’ Armenian forwarding company informed daily Azg that staring January 1 new order is in effect for Armenian products’ shipment via Black Sea, which is carried out by Ukrainian Ukrferry shipping company. As our readers already know, the Ukrainian Ukrferry company informed the Armenian side that the prices of shipment of Armenian products via Black Sea are going to go up starting January 2002. The Ukrainian company said it was going to remove the 20% discount fixed for Armenian goods’ transfer and is going to ship Armenian products via Batumi port instead of Poti, Georgia. Bearing in mind all these factors, the chairman of Union of Armenian Businessmen and Industrialists (UABI) Arsen Ghazarian, who is also the head of ‘Apaven’ forwarding company, noted earlier that the prices of shipment for one tone of products will rise by 5-6 USD. Daily Azg earlier informed that for helping the Armenian forwarders Armenian trade and industry and transport and communication ministers contacted their Ukrainian counterparts and asked to deal with the issue. Also the issue was discussed at the Business Support Council, which is headed by the Armenian prime minister Andranik Margarian. Armenian Business Competition Protection Council also tried to influence the decision of ‘Ukrferry’ contacting its Ukrainian colleagues. But all the efforts were in vain. Pointing out that the Ukrferry is a private company, state officials were noting that the mediation of Ukrainian corresponding bodies may only have a symbolic character and will not affect Ukrferry’s decision. Pitifully these doubts became justified. The chairman of UABI said that the decision of Ukrainian shipping company is natural, as far as Armenian forwarders do not have any other route to ship their products through. © Copyright AZG
edward demian
I don't understand some things. Is the Armenian Economy dependant on a single private enterprise for the shipping of of it's goods?Does that enterprise have an exclusive agreement with the Georgian government? If so, what if the Turks buy controlling stock in it? Would that mean they would be able to blocade us even more?If not, is it because that transport company is the only one interested in operating a Ferry? If so, what is the big deal about buying a used ferry somewhere and establish our own line? Are the harbor facilities leasd out exclusively to this ferrying company also.If so, how hard can it be to build a ferrying facility. I bet it would cost less than that cathedral we just built.Help me out here. What is the skinny on this picture?
