Scott Student Center, Alumni Lounge (SC-138).Dr. Ungor will discuss the mass sequestration of Armenian propertyby the Young Turk regime during the 1915 Armenian genocide. He willlook at the emergence of Turkish economic nationalism, offeringinsight into the economic ramifications of the genocidal process,and describing how the plunder was organized on the ground, especiallyhow local elites became beneficiaries of state-sanctioned robbery.Ugur Umit Ungor earned his Ph.D. in 2009 (cum laude) at the Universityof Amsterdam. In 2008-09, he was a Lecturer in International History atthe Department of History of the University of Sheffield. In 2009-2010,he was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for War Studiesof University College Dublin. Currently, he is a Lecturer at theDepartment of History at Utrecht University and at the Institute forWar, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam.His main areas of interest are state and nation formation, with aparticular focus on mass violence. His most recent publicationsinclude Confiscation and Destruction: The Young Turk Seizure ofArmenian Property (Continuum, 2011) and the award-winning, The Makingof Modern Turkey: Nation and State in Eastern Anatolia, 1913-1950(Oxford University Press, 2011).Apart from his academic life, Dr. Ungor writes satirical columns andessays about cosmopolitan life on and across political and culturalboundaries.
