Sip
Ok, sorry for yet another one of these mental diarrhea's that I seem to have once in a while but the discussions (esp. seeing the "hye" perspective) in the past on several topics have been VERY interesting to me (such as the bed making stuff which turned very political at some point and the table cleanup stuff) ... So this is the next thing that's been bothering me ... I just saw it mentioned in another thread ... Why do people always say "looks don't matter"? It's not what what you look like but it's what you think (brains) ... etc etc I really think you are what you seem to be. i.e. you are what you look like. I really couldn't care less what you THINK. The only thing that really matters in life is what you present to the outside (of your brain). You could have the greatest, most amazing stuff in your brain ... but if it never comes out then it doesn't really matter! On a related note, I think beauty does matter a lot to people. I have heard many many times about how "looks" don't matter but it just seems to me that it is not very true. So here's the question that I have: 1) You are what you think.2) You are what you seem to be. Which one of those do you believe? (feel free to propose a third if you feel it better desribes what you think). Simple example to defend my position: Suppose I really really hate purple people. Suppose I NEVER do anything bad to purple people and never say anything bad about them. I say I am NOT prejudiced. Do you think I am? Accelerated
I disagree, because not on one ocassion have I seen the most beautiful girl, but after having a conversation with her (5 minutes is sufficient to tell ones personality), I could not be attracted to her no matter how good she looked. LOL. I remember one occasion in particular, at a party about 6 months ago. I started a conversation with a Lebanese chick (she was the best one at the party). She turned out to be SO STUPID (you would never say this from her looks) that its not funny. Me and my friend were poking fun at her all night (she got it eventually). She didnt know the meaning of IQ! And LOL during the conversation i said somethin like. "We (Armenians) were blond with blue eyes then the Turks came and raped all the women (hence our midle eastern looks)" She was SHOCKED! LOL. And took what I said literally. Oh my, had we fun that night..... Of course there are cases when what you have said is true, but generally I think its a mix of both. Anshnork
We live in a society that's very looks-oriented. This ESPECIALLY applies to women, although it also affects men to a certain extent. Because we are a part of this society, we have internalized this message and thus, anyone who says "I DO NOT care about looks AT ALL" is lying. We all do, to different degrees. Do I think this is right? No. The effects of this on women (and men) is devastating. The idea that only appearance matters leads to the objectification of women in the media and in real life. This is exemplified in Accelerated's behavior in which he walks in a party and "judges" the women there, as if they were objects for him to judge and choose the "best." (Accelerated- I'm not attacking you, I'm just using you as an example.) However, I also think that "brains" are important as well to most people. Like Accelerated, I don't think most people are going to stay with complete ditzes. Anyway, that is just my opinion.
Sip
quote:Originally posted by Anshnork:...However, I also think that "brains" are important as well to most people...Yah but the point I am trying to make is that "brain" is useless if nothing comes out! I have seen people that have pretty amazing thoughts in their heads but they NEVER or rarely express it ... so although they may have exceptional brains, all it matters is what they seem and look like to others. What they think about in the privacy of their brains is completely irrelevant in my opinion
Accelerated
quote:This is exemplified in Accelerated's behavior in which he walks in a party and "judges" the women there, as if they were objects for him to judge and choose the "best." Thats correct, I only have time to proply go out once a week. Now I dont wont to spend this time chatting to some boring ugly, I will try my luck with whomever I suspect I will have a good time with (physically and/or mentally ). So please dont feed me this 'moral' BS. quote:Yah but the point I am trying to make is that "brain" is useless if nothing comes out!Well, unless your mean that literally (LOL, been watching too much Saving Private Ryan), I dont understand how the "brain" coming out has any effect on ones looks from a distance. Sip
Well, maybe it's our definitions of "looks" that is the problem... with "looks" I mean how you are preceived by others which are always at a distance since no two bodies can occupy the same space (at least none that I know of). So how you "look" is how I preceive you by your actions (which includes your physical appearance, what you say, what you do, facial expressions, etc etc).
