MosJan
Armenia has opened its first supercomputer center, named after the legendary singer Charles Aznavour. The National Supercomputer Center of Armenia, located in Engineering City in Yerevan, was inaugurated on May 31. This state-of-the-art facility aims to advance research in industry, education, and science. The supercomputer boasts a capacity of 1 petaflop, capable of performing up to 10 to 15 operations per second with its 24,500 cores connected by high-speed channels. To put this in perspective, achieving 1 petaflop means the system can perform 1 quadrillion calculations every second. It supports cloud computing, machine learning, data analysis, and research in AI, quantum physics, astrophysics, and bioinformatics. Additionally, it offers up to 1,500 terabytes of storage for scientists and researchers. The center’s establishment is a significant milestone for the country’s scientific and technological progress, emphasizing the importance of providing the necessary infrastructure to foster innovation and creativity among scientists and engineers. Having the proper infrastructure and knowledge is crucial for conducting world-class research and retaining creative talent within Armenia. The center promises to be a hub for groundbreaking research, collaborations, and new discoveries in computing, modeling, and data analytics. It is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, providing large-scale computing and information resources to both the private and public sectors. The establishment of the National Supercomputer Center was carried out through a public-private partnership, with the support and cooperation of the Ministry of High-Tech Industry of Armenia, the World Bank, the Enterprise Incubator Foundation, the Institute of Informatics and Automation Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, the Toulouse Institute of Computer Science (Paul Sabatier University), and the company ATOS (now Eviden). Armenia is the first among the Eastern Partnership countries to install such a supercomputer, a pioneering step unmatched in Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. During the event, speeches were delivered by Deputy Speaker Hakob Arshakyan, Minister Mkhitar Hayrapetyan, World Bank Country Manager for Armenia Carolin Geginat, Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia Vassilis Maragos, Chief of the Economic Section at the U.S. Embassy Allison Hannan, Co-founder and Chairman of the Aznavour Foundation Nicolas Aznavour, and Chairman of the Engineering Association Aram Salatian. Nicolas Aznavour highlighted that his father, Charles Aznavour, had a strong interest in technology and innovation alongside his musical career. He recalled how his father viewed technology as a tool to create and find new ideas, even being one of the early adopters of computer technology in the 1980s to write and record music. Nicolas shared memories of exploring electronic shops in Tokyo with his father, which influenced his own passion for technology and guided him toward a scientific career. Nicolas expressed that his father would be honored and inspired by the decision to name the first supercomputer in Armenia after him. He hopes the supercomputer will empower students and researchers to achieve significant breakthroughs, just as his father made remarkable contributions to the arts and humanities. The National Supercomputer Center of Armenia marks a significant step forward in the nation’s technological capabilities, fostering an environment for groundbreaking research and development. The center stands as a testament to Charles Aznavour’s legacy, merging his contributions to the arts with his passion for technology, and paving the way for future innovations in Armenia.
