Arev
Egoyan to film Armenian tragedy Toronto-based director Atom Egoyan will be working from home in 2001. By spring, Egoyan should be starting up his new movie in Toronto, dealing with the genocide of Armenians over the years. The filmmaker, born in Cairo of Armenian parents, plans to shoot half of his picture in Toronto and half at an undisclosed location, probably in Europe. Although specifics haven't been revealed, Egoyan surprised a few people in the film community by choosing 73-year-old, Paris-based Armenian singer Charles Aznavour as one of the leads. In February 1999, Egoyan made news when he protested after a Liberal MP questioned whether the mass murder of Armenian civilians in Turkey during the First World War should be described as "genocide." The Oscar-nominated director (for The Sweet Hereafter) had his previous movie, Krapp's Last Tape, debut at September's Toronto International Film Festival. It was about time. Through art we´ll start to move towards our goals. Since we failed in properly using most other means so far.
