Azeri Journalists Seek Asylum In The US

YEREVAN (Armenpress)—The Baku-based 525 Gazet reports that the staff of one of the leading Azeri newspapers Azadlig sent a letter to the US Ambassador in Azerbaijan Ross Wilson asking for political asylum for themselves and their families.

"The life and safety of the staff is in danger and we ask you to provide us immediate political asylum in the territory of the US Embassy in Baku with later transfer to the USA," the letter says.

The letter says that persecution and pressure on the free media in Azerbaijan have acquired unprecedented dimensions and the Azadlig daily has become the main target of the authorities' attacks.

The letter says that the authorities violently canceled a rally in support of free press, that was planned by the staff of Azadlig, Hurriyet and Yeni Musavat dailies on December 12. During the clash with the police a staffer of the Azadlig was injured and was sent to a hospital.
