His election must be approved by Israel and the Jordanian king.There are an estimated 2,000 Armenians living in Jerusalem today, down from an estimated 16,000 in 1948 when the state of Israel was created. Yeghisheh won, mostly because, in addition to the below, in addition him (a celibate?) having fathered several illegitimate children, he was a pimp for the Jordanian palace's drunken orgies. At the time his most vociferous campaigners were his “concubines”. That was the most scandalous era of the Jerusalem Patrirachate. We are not speaking of his pilferage of the Church treasures, when his loot were auctioned in many places. Then came Abp. The position of Patriarch of Jerusalem remained vacant from 1949 to 1957 and 1958 to 1960, with a brief period from 1957 to 1958, when Tiran Nersoyan was elected Patriarch, but not consecrated….
