Dr. Susan Pattie will give an illustrated lecture at ALMA on January23 about the rich oral history narratives inspired by ordinaryobjects, the treasures of every-day life. Objects evoke memories,create an interest in exploring history and provide symbolic andpowerful connections with others in the past and present. Usingexamples from a recent exhibition in London of Armenian life duringOttoman times, Dr. Pattie will show how even after the Genocide,objects remain within homes that reveal intimate details of past livesas well as the journeys taken to arrive in their present location. Her recent book, Treasured Objects: Armenian Life in the OttomanEmpire, co-authored with colleagues at the Armenian Institute inLondon, will be available for purchase. Dr. Susan Pattie is a cultural anthropologist and continues herresearch and writing on the Armenian diaspora. She is Director ofALMA, Senior Research Fellow at University College London and teachessubjects including "Food, Culture and Identity" and "Sacred AcrossCultures".
