Funeral of Murdered Armenian Woman in Istanbul Evokes Memories of

Earlier Cover-Ups

http://www.armenianweekly.com/2013/01/06/funeral-of-murdered-armenian-woman-in-istanbul-evokes-memories-of-earlier-cover-ups/

January 6, 2013

ISTANBUL, Turkey (A.W.) - The funeral of 84-year-old Marissa Kuchuk

(Küçük), who was brutally murdered in her apartment in Istanbul, was

held on Jan. 5, amid fears that violent acts against the country's

Christian minorities will continue being swept under the rug.

In recent years, there have been several attacks against Armenians in

Turkey. On April 24, 2011, Sevag Balikci was killed by a fellow

soldier.

Armenian Weekly columnist Ayse Gunaysu pointed to possible attempts

to silence the family of the victims. `Before the service, while

waiting in the Church yard, there was a heavy silence. The silence of

those who know but are unable to speak about what they know. The

family was asked not to talk to the `outsiders.''

`I noticed, thanks to my experience during the military dictatorship

years, that there were dozens of policemen in plainclothes inside and

around the church,' she told Armenian Weekly editor Khatchig Mouradian

in an interview.

Kuchuk's funeral mass was held at the Armenian Church in Samatya

(current name Mustafa*****), where hundreds had gathered to pay their

respects. `Both inside the church and the churchyard were full of

people of all ages,' said Gunaysu, who attended the funeral. `While

the coffin was being carried on the shoulders [of mourners], I saw

Marissa's daughter, hardly able to walk, held by the arms by two other

middle aged women.'

On Dec. 29, Marissa Kuchuk was stabbed seven times and her throat was

slit. The perpetrator(s) carved a cross on her chest using a sharp

object, according to some Turkish newspaper and TV reports.

Gunaysu, who is also an active member in the Istanbul branch of the

Human Rights Association, talked to the Armenian Weekly about the

necessity and at the same time the impossibility of protesting against

Kuchuk's murder, because that would leave the victim's family in a

difficult situation.

Gunaysu and others from the Human Rights Association had visited the

victim's family a few days earlier. `The funeral and the visit we paid

the family made me find myself lost in a suffocating feeling that we

can do absolutely nothing to help the family and their neighbors,

because whatever we would do to protest this murder would make them

feel even more uneasy,' she said.

`They know that they would be the ones who would pay for it in one way

or another, while our protest would provide us with the satisfaction

of having fulfilled our `duty,'' she added.

Gunaysu pointed to `an enormous abyss separating us from the family.

While we tried to defend human rights, they would be all alone in

their daily lives in a world of denial.'

In recent years, there have been several attacks against Armenians in

Turkey. Earlier in December, another Armenian woman was brutally

attacked and robbed. Months earlier, an Armenian woman was called an

infidel and attacked in a cab by the driver himself. On April 24,

2011, Sevag Balikci, an Armenian serving in the Turkish army, was

killed by a fellow soldier in what was a clear hate crime on the

commemoration day of the Armenian genocide. In January 2007,

Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink was murdered in broad daylight

in Istanbul.

According to human rights activists, the common thread that runs

through all these crimes is not just their being motivated by hate and

committed in an environment breeding intolerance against Armenians,

but also the efforts of the authorities to play them down and cover

them up.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CONCERNED WITH THE KILLING OF ARMENIAN WOMAN IN TURKEY

http://www.armradio.am/en/2013/01/07/amnesty-international-concerned-with-the-killing-of-armenian-woman-in-turkey/

Amnesty International human rights organization issued a statement

criticizing the violent murder of the 85-year-old Armenian woman

Maritsa Kuchuk in Turkey. She was beaten, stabbed and decapitated.

The Istanbul-based Armenian Agos weekly warns that this is not the

first case of violence against Armenians. Another woman was assaulted

and robbed in December. Amnesty International warns that last year

a taxi driver attacked the passenger only because the latter was

Armenian.

The international organization does not rule out that Sevak Balkci's

murder on April 24 in the army was due to religious issues and ethnic

intolerance.

The organization appeals to the Turkish authorities to eliminate

intolerance in the society in order to prevent such cases.

MURDER OF ETHNIC ARMENIAN WOMAN, AND SILENCE OF RELEVANT BODIES - AGOS PAPER'S EDITOR ON ATTACK OF ARMENIAN WOMEN

http://www.tert.am/en/news/2013/01/09/koptash-martitsa-kucuk/

11:38 ~U 09.01.13

The murder of 85-year-old ethnic Armenian woman in Turkey was presented

as a regular murder while the Armenian community in Turkey is rather

concerned as the details of the case have not been unveiled and the

relevant bodies have not spoken up, Istanbul-based Armenian-Turkish

Agos weekly's editor, Rober Koptas writes.

"The murder of Maritsa Kucuk, from the first glance could have

been viewed as a regular case in Turkey - breaking into a house,

slashing the throat and stealing some jewelry. The police have started

investigation. The family is in pain. This was the only information.

The journalists closed the topic and the officials continue keeping

silence," Koptas, ethnic Armenian, wrote.

The editor though reminds that it is the second attack on the ethnic

Armenian woman in Istanbul's Samatya district. "The recent case is

already the second case of the attack of ethnic Armenian woman in a

month and for a small number of people knowing about it the murder

of Maritsa Kucuk was quite alarming and the possible connection of

these two cases is terrifying.

The other woman was 87 years old resident of Samatya district. The

woman has lost the sight on one eye.

"Maritsa Kucuk's murder reminded all the Armenians living in Istanbul

the previous attack. During the same month, in the same district two

Armenian women were attacked, one of them murdered, the other losing

an eye. Besides, Kucuk's son who found the body of his mother said

a cross was made on her body with a knife," the Agos editor wrote,

adding that the son though earlier said probably it was not cross.

The incident raised a question among 50,000 Armenians living in

Istanbul whether the women were attacked because of their ethnic

belonging.

Rober Koptas has addressed few questions, saying that the Armenian

community is expecting to get answers to them. Among these questions

are whether there was a cross on Maritsa Kucuk's body, whether the

attacks on the two ethnic Armenian women are just a coincidence,

whether the robbery is the cause of the attack, and if so why the

attacks were so violent. The police told Kucuk family that the attack

was committed by amateurs and the arrest of the criminal is a matter

of minutes. Kopsar reminded that earlier an Armenian woman beaten

by a taxi driver applied to the police and the latter said that the

arrest of the taxi driver was a matter of minutes while 15 months

have passed and the person has not been arrested yet.

NEW TENSION IN ARMENIA-TURKEY RELATIONS?

HAKOB BADALYAN

http://www.lragir.am/index.php/eng/0/comments/view/28616

18:42 11/01/2013

Story from Lragir.am News:

The Haberturk reported the murder of Ilker Sahin, 40, an Armenian

teacher based in Istanbul. He was found in his house with a cut neck.

Police doubt the reason was the robbery. Most probably, he was

killed on ethnic grounds. This is the third in a series of assaults

on Armenians in the past few weeks. Earlier an Armenian woman of 80

was killed, and another Armenian woman was assaulted but her life

was saved.

What is happening in Turkey? Are these assaults the result of a surge

of chauvinism in Turkey or are these cases accidents which are not

related to one another, and the grounds of murders are not ethnic?

This question has not been answered yet. No individual or organization

has claimed responsibility for the murders to reveal the reasons for

chasing the Armenians.

Whatever is taking place, and if it is taking place on ethnic grounds

is not in Turkey's interests, especially now that the country is

facing serious problems and challenges, expects greater presence

of NATO in its territory to handle the Syrian developments, thus

hoping to protect its territory from Syrian gusts. At the same time,

the Kurdish issue is featuring the international agenda of analysts

which may be quickly transferred onto official agendas provided certain

scenarios are adopted, at least as a tool for pressure on Turkey.

Anti-Armenian expressions will be additional burden and weight on

Turkey and will not relieve the problems which the leadership of this

country must resolve.

This could be Ankara's nervous reaction. It might be trying to look

for those guilty, and the Armenians are a handy target. Ankara also

understands that the Armenian factor has a key importance in the

anti-Turkish toolkit, and even if the Armenians are "innocent",

Turkey may hit them to force others to retreat.

There is uncertainty for the time being but the anti-Armenian actions

in such a short period of time cause concerns. Fast and abrupt

prevention of a possible anti-Armenian surge or moods through legal

and political steps is an urgent step Ankara is advised to take,

and a delay may result in consequences which may come up slowly but

will be considerable.

After all, anti-Armenian actions ahead of the 100th anniversary of

the Genocide is not the best decision for Ankara, and even if it is a

desperate step to prevent the noticed or expected tendencies in the

process of the international recognition of the genocide, including

the agenda of contribution, this step will hardly help Ankara prevent

those tendencies.

A computer science teacher working for an Armenian school in Ýstanbul's

Kadýkoy district was killed on Friday.

Ýlker Þahin (40), a computer science teacher at Aramyan Uncuyan

Primary School, was found dead in his home.

Þahin was living alone in the district's Caferaða neighborhood,

and had not shown up at school since the Orthodox Christmas, which

is celebrated on Jan. 7. Worried about him, his friends broke down

his door and found him dead. His throat had been slit by a knife.

The Ýstanbul Police Department's homicide bureau determined during

their inspection at the scene of the incident that there were signs

of struggle.

Þahin's body was taken to the morgue of Goztepe Education and Research

Hospital after an examination by experts and a public prosecutor.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Þahin's neighbors told the police that they do not think Þahin had

Þahin divorced three years ago and has one daughter.

Initial reports also said that the police found bullets in Þahin's

body.

In the most recent two attacks against Armenians, an 87-year-old

jewelry along with some other valuable possessions in December. Again

in late December, an 84-year-old Armenian woman was murdered in her

Turkish teacher at Armenian school found murdered in his home
ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News

Hürriyet photo

An elementary school teacher who taught computer lessons at an Armenian school in Istanbul’s Asian district of Kadıköy was found murdered in his home today.

Friends discovered 40-year-old İlker Şahin dead in his apartment with his throat slit after they came searching for him when he did not show up for work three days in a row since the Orthodox Christmas, which is celebrated on Jan. 7.

Administrators at the private Aramyan Uncuyan Elementary School said Şahin was not an Armenian and they did not consider the murder a “hate crime.”

“He was a great person, always gentle and kind. He was suffering from economic difficulties, this is what he would complain about,” a school manager told the Hürriyet Daily News today in a phone interview.

Şahin had been working for 12 years at the school, whose teaching staff consists of teachers of both Turkish and Armenian origin.

Classroom teachers are Armenian but in-field teachers can be Turkish or Armenian, outside of Turkish language and introduction to social studies classes, according to administrators, who noted that there was no threat against their school and that the incident has not been considered a threat against them.

Şahin’s body was taken to the morgue of the Göztepe Education and Research Hospital for an autopsy.

No further details on the murder have been revealed and an investigation continues into the matter.

Attempt of kidnapping ethnic Armenian woman in Istanbul

    tert.am

    13:06 - 13.01.13

An attempt to kidnap an Armenian woman has failed in Istanbul,

Armenian-Turkish paper Agos, based in Istanbul reports.

The paper says the incident follows the murder of an ethnic Armenian

Maritza Kucuk in Istanbul's Samatya district.

The woman was going to attend the Christmas liturgy while on the way

to the church an attempt was made to forcibly sit in a car. The woman

managed to escape and upon reaching the church applied to the police.

Earlier Agos reported that days before the murder of Armenian woman in

Samatya, another attack against ethnic Armenian woman was committed as

a result of which she lost an eye. The paper says police and

    responsible bodies are suspiciously silent.

The witnesses of the kidnap attempt say that a white car approached

the old woman with three men in it. First they asked her whether she

knows a woman named Fathman, then they said they are distributing aid

and were persuading the woman to sit in the car. The woman refused and

    reached the church.

The non-official response of the police is already known. Speaking to

Agos they said they are doing everything to reveal the murder, adding

that about 20 police squads are working over the case.

The police claim the possibility of murder on ethnic belonging is very

small and refuted the information about cross made on the body of the

    victim with a knife.

The residents of the district though say that until the murder and

other crimes are not disclosed they will not be calm.

`Both adults and children have psychological problems. We have warned

my old mom not to talk to anyone,' one of the residents, Anahit

    Firincin said.

Another resident Varduhi Gyozoglu described what happens there with

    the beginning of 1915.

`We are all in fear, thinking whether our turn is to come or not. We

cannot leave the house and are afraid to open the door. Do these

attacks mean the 1915 returns? We wish these crimes be revealed very

    quickly,' she said.

Another elderly Armenian woman was assaulted, on Tuesday evening, in Istanbul’s densely-Armenian-populated Samatya district.

The woman was attacked nearby a local police precinct. The assailant was around 35 years old and he was wearing black clothes.

It is noted that the Armenian woman was severely beaten. As a result, her glasses were broken and its glass caused damage to the woman’s eye; she underwent a surgery on Wednesday morning.

Istanbul Office of the Human Rights Association of Turkey called for a demonstration, on Wednesday at 4pm, against violence taking place on xenophobic grounds.

To note, this is the third such attack against elderly Armenian women in Samatya.
