MONUMENT TO GREAT ARMENIAN KING UNVEILED IN YEREVAN

A monument to the great Armenian king Argishti I was unveiled in

Yerevan today. The monument is situated near the Museum of Erebuni

- the ancient Armenian fortress dating back to Urartu (also known

as Kingdom of Van) of which Argishti of a king. Argishti rides a

chariot with two horses made of two types of tufa: red and dark.

The dark horse symbolizes the past of Armenia, not always very

happy, and the red one the future, which is hoped to be bright and

cloudless. Prime Minister of Armenia Andranik Margaryan and Mayor

of Yerevan Robert Nazaryan were present at the ceremony. Margaryan

said that was a remarkable event in the life of Yerevan and one

must do his best to preserve the historical memory of the people

for the generations to come. Argishti I reigned in 786-763 BC. He

united Armenian tribes and established a prosperous and highly

developed culture on the Armenian plateau. It was he who erected

the Erebuni fortress, which later grew into what is now Yerevan,

the capital of Armenia.

Haha! How did I never see this thread??? My brother was born on June 21 and is called Argishti! Is that coincidence or what?! He doesn't have a chariot though. I think my parents had great expectations when they named their kids, but unfortunately not much has come out of us so far My cousin Menua hopes his son will turn out better
