A stout taste of Armenia

Beer brewed with Armenian coffee will be featured at Dionicess X and sold at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank.

Within moments of stepping into Gevork Kazanchyan's Eagle Rock home, his mother Mary has placed a copper-colored jazzve of Armenian coffee on the stove. “How sweet would you like it?” she asks with a smile. A demitasse of the ultra-potent brew later, the conversation shifts to Armenian spirits. Bottles of Ijevan mulberry brandy are brought out. It's time for a tour of Gevork's pride and joy: the beer cellar.

 

Though Kazanchyan works in risk management by day, he is 100% beer geek by night, as evidenced by his fully stocked, custom-climatized fridge packed to the gills with global craft brews.

 

Thankfully that passion isn't lost on the populace: Since 2008, he has engineered a series of events titled Dionicess, which unites craft brewers, celebrated chefs and artisanal purveyors for an evening of gustatory delight. The series is toasting its 10th installation in June, and in honor of the occasion, Kazanchyan has tapped some of his brewing buddies to collaborate on a very personal project — a commemorative beer called System of a Stout.

 

The name is a play on the L.A.-based Armenian rock group System of a Down. The beer will include several quintessentially Armenian ingredients, including cardamom, Armenian cognac and, of course, coffee.

 

The idea for this regionally inspired beer was hatched at one of Kazanchyan's “inventory reduction parties,” where he and Portola Coffee Lab owner Jeff Duggan chatted over cellared beers about how they might collaborate. Duggan's coffee cred paired with his background in chemistry made him the perfect fit for a roaster. Then came the tough bit: finding a brewer. On a long shot, Kazanchyan rang up Julian Shrago, of the award-winning Beachwood BBQ & Brewing. Shrago agreed, and the rest is history in the making.

 

Dionicess has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 2008, where when Kazanchyan paired Glendale's Mignon chocolates with boutique wines for the inaugural event. His gatherings have since evolved to focus on matching craft beer with food in a unique, unexpected way.

 

“I look back at the time that I used to sit and taste everything with one other guy, and now I've got an Iron Chef winner [chef Eric Greenspan, Dionicess VII], an amazing world-class mixologist [Matthew Biancaniello, Dionicess IX], and a top brewer [shrago] who want to collaborate,” says Kazanchyan, who grew up on the fringes of Thai Town and Little Armenia. “It's pretty amazing.”

 

Dionicess X's theme is appropriately named Coming of Age, and will showcase five courses (plus a few bonus rounds) of aged beers paired with dishes that feature pickled and fermented foods from around the world. Guests will get to take home commemorative bottles of the beer, as well as some of Beachwood's house-made, barrel-aged hot sauce. Of course, System of a Stout will play a central role in the meal.

 

“I've brewed a lot of imperial stouts, but this one is 100% distinct,” says Shrago. “It was inherently wasteful to brew, but it's got a great nose, and it's immediately identifiable as being Armenian coffee.”

 

The process of making the beer itself is unique. First comes the mash, where crushed grains of barley get mixed with hot water, similar to oatmeal. That sweet liquid is then drained into a boil kettle. That's when the blackstrap molasses, hops, cardamom and Duggan's Armenian roast come in.

 

“We can't simulate the body produced by suspending coffee grounds in the beer because doing so would cause issues with brewing and serving the beer. What we shot for was the flavor essence of [unfiltered] Armenian coffee without the gritty mouthfeel,” Duggan says. “This objective led me to the selection of the two [direct trade Brazilian] coffees I chose to custom roast specifically for this beer.”

 

To impart the coffee flavors into the beer, the beans were ground to a coarseness similar to that of a French press grind, and then steeped like tea into the boil. The beer was then fermented, finished and conditioned. Conditioning is where the coffee steeper is removed and swapped for Armenian-brandy-soaked oak chips. System of a Stout is currently in its last stages of brewing, and will be ready just in time for the 10th installation of Dionicess, which will take place at Beachwood on June 10 in Long Beach.

 

Long Beach is a haul from L.A., but thankfully the 10 remaining kegs of System of a Stout will be sold at a small selection of craft beer bars in Southern California, one of which is Burbank's Tony's Darts Away. Two dollars from each pint sale will go to the Real Medicine Foundation in Armenia.

 

When asked to speak about the success and growth of the event, Kazanchyan replies in a way that would make his mother proud. “It's very humbling and surreal that we've pulled off nine events, and each time they've kind of outdone themselves. We've really made the best of our resources and what's available. And Armenians take pride in being very resourceful, practical and innovative. We've had to be out of necessity.”

had a great success at the 19th Metropolitan Round-Robin Tournament

that was held in Los Angeles. Armchess.am informs about this.

 

Samuel scored 6,5 points out of 9, shared 1-3 places and fulfilled

an International Master norm.

to visit your cultural monuments tomorrow. As an Austrian I feel good

in a country, where culture plays a significant role."

 

Upon completion of his speech, he stressed Armenian chess players'

talent and success.

 

"Austrians are the best skiers, while Armenians are the best chess

players; thus the score is 0-0," Austrian leader said with a smile.

AUSTRIAN PRESIDENT SAYS ARMENIA'S GEGHARD COMPLEX WORLD'S CULTURAL TREASURE

Austrian President Heinz Fischer and his spouse visited today Garni

temple in Armenia's region of Kotayk, and then departed for Geghard.

 

In Geghard complex the Austrian delegation toured in St Mary (Surb

Astvatsatsin) church.

 

Speaking to reporters, the Austrian president said he has managed

to be in few sites in Armenia but has been greatly impressed with

Geghard complex and the spiritual songs by young singers. "Their

voice seemed divine for me. Geghard is not only Armenia's cultural

treasure but the treasure of world culture," he said.

 

"I am impressed with the hospitality of Armenians, smiling journalists,

there are no such in Austria and Vienna," he said.

 

Heinz Fischer will wrap up his three-day visit to Armenia after being

hosted in Etchmiadzin by His Holiness Catholicos of All Armenians.

GIVING HOPE: AN ARMENIAN GENETICIST'S SUCCESS STORY

Women are generally known as the more nurturing and caring gender.

 

Well, what happens when you combine those compassionate traits with

a genuine interest in genetic analysis? Ask Nelly Oundjian, a medical

geneticist with a specialty in pediatrics and clinical psychogenetics.

 

That may all sound quite complicated, but Oundjian describes her

profession in terms that we can all understand, which is part of what

makes her so good at her job.

 

Nelly Oundjian, a medical geneticist with a specialty in pediatrics

and clinical psychogenetics Born in Syria, Oundjian completed medical

school there in 1981. After coming to the U.S. in 1982, she planned

to become a pediatric neurologist. However, after listening to a

Columbia professor's lecture on genetics, she knew she had found her

calling. "The field wasn't very advanced at the time so several of my

friends would tell me 'This is crazy! Why do you want to do this?' But

I don't know, it was so interesting, it was kind of my destiny."

 

The ease with which she shifted into this new branch of medicine seems

characteristic of Oundjian, who approaches situations with a level head

and positive outlook despite the often-depressing situations in her

work. As a genetic analyst, Oundjian diagnoses children and newborns

with birth defects, mental retardation, or other genetic conditions

and provides management and treatment. She also branches out to

provide prenatal genetic counseling to pregnant women and screens

for cancer genetics in women who have familial breast, ovarian,

or colon cancers. "I think my favorite part about my job is when I

am able to diagnose women and find out the case of their cancer,"

she says. "These women come in to see me and they're so scared,

but by the time they leave the session they have no fear because I

absorb it from them and give them hope."

 

These motherly habits come naturally to Oundjian, who is the mother of

three boys-John, Peter, and Andrew. Considering that she is a doctor,

one might assume that it would be difficult to manage a career and a

family at the same time. Yet, Oundjian explains that her specific field

of medicine has allowed her to work on a part-time basis. One of the

ways she was able to manage working and caring for her boys was with

the help of the Armenian community, through such programs as the ACYOA,

St. Vartan Camp, and Sunday School at St. Leon's Church in Fairlawn,

N.J. "In a country where people belong to different ethnic groups,

the Armenian community helped them find an identity and helped them

become better people," she says.

 

Oundjian herself has a rather inspirational way of connecting to her

Armenian heritage. "I remember hearing stories of my grandpa and how

he came to Syria and I always thought of the strength and perseverance

of the Armenian people," she explains. "A lot of times I told myself

that I had these qualities because I am Armenian."

 

With a successful career and a happy family already under her belt,

Oundjian has her sights set high for her future as well. "In the

future I would like to retire and write. I've written a lot of short

stories and even poems," she says. "But genetics have improved so much

since I started, I want to establish some kind of genetic center in

an underdeveloped country. I will retire doing that for sure."

The Armenian Little Singers choir - whose repertoire includes classical

songs, modern music, jazz and bossa nova - are performing in Japan

for the first time.

 

The singers - 40 girls aged 11 to 18 - are all students of music

schools in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, the mountainous landlocked

nation that sits along the old Great Silk Road and between the Black

Sea and Caspian Sea.

 

The group was originally established by Tigran Hekekyan, Professor of

Choral Conducting at Komitas State Conservatory in Armenia, in 1992,

and it has since won many awards at international chorus competitions,

says Min-On Concert Association, the choir's Japan tour organizer. It

also tours Europe and the United States every year.

 

For this extended tour in Japan - which includes 16 venues, some

of which have already sold out - the girls will sing several hymns

such as "Ave Verum Corpus," as well as a George Gershwin medley,

"The Girl from Ipanema," "In the Mood" and other popular songs.

ARMENIAN PUPILS RETURN FROM INTERNATIONAL CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD WITH FOUR MEDALS

The Armenian delegation returned from the International Chemistry

Olympiad with medals. Four pupils of high school brought four bronze

medals from Washington.

 

70 countries participated in the 44th International Chemistry

Olympiad. Each country was represented by 4 pupils. As a rule,

the participants are the winners of the republican Olympiads of the

given countries.

 

The Armenian pupils showed good results and are satisfied with them,

though they acknowledge that the main difficulty was the experimental

part. They say they were trained in Armenia in laboratories with old

equipment, therefore they saw several equipments presented at the

competition for the first time.

 

"If our children fight not for their individual but for our flag and

country, they will succeed. If the child thinks about himself/herself,

we'll never succeed. All our children had brought flags independent

of each other. Each year we had one flag, and that was brought by me.

 

This year, all of them brought flags. Perhaps, it was presentiment. It

turned out all the four flags were necessary, because the Armenian

flag was raised for four times and that was a big achievement," the

head of chemistry chair of the Yerevan State Medical University Lida

Sahakyan said.

Մինչեւ նոյեմբեր շահագործման կհանձնվի 11-րդ դարում կառուցված Գառնիի կամուրջը։ Շինարարական աշխատանքները սկսվել են հուլիսի 2-ից եւ առաջին փուլը կավարտվի օգոստոսի 15-ին։ Ընկերության պատասխանատուները վստահեցնում են, որ այն ամբողջությամբ պատրաստ կլինի նախանշված ժամկետից շուտ։ Պատմամշակութային այս եզակի հուշարձանը վերանորոգելու մասին հուշագիրն անցյալ տարի ստորագրել են ՀՀ մշակույթի նախարար Հասմիկ Պողոսյանն ու ՀՀ-ում ԱՄՆ դեսպան Ջոն Հեֆերնը։ Ամերիկյան հիմնադրամն այդ նպատակով հատկացրել է 110 հազար ԱՄՆ դոլար գումար։ Աշխատանքների պատվիրատուն «Պատմամշակութային արգելոց-թանգարանների եւ պատմական միջավայրի պահպանություն ծառայության» ՊՈԱԿ-ն է, իսկ մրցույթով ընտրված կապալառուն «Տիգրան-Ավիկ» ՍՊԸ-ն:

 

«Պատմամշակութային արգելոց-թանգարանների եւ պատմական միջավայրի պահպանություն ծառայության» ՊՈԱԿ-ից հայտնում են, որ Հայաստանում ԱՄՆ դեսպանատան ու ՀՀ մշակույթի նախարարության ներկայացուցիչները եղան Գառնիում՝ տեղում ծանոթացան շինարարական աշխատանքների ընթացքին։

 

«Կամրջի վերականգնումը կարող է վերածվել «Գառնի» պատմամշակութային արգելոց-թանգարանի եւ «Խոսրովի անտառ» պետական արգելոցի տարածքներում գտնվող նշանավոր հուշարձանային համալիրների կապակցման արդյունավետ եղանակի՝ պահպանելով հուշակոթողը եւ այն օգտագործելով կրթամշակութային, զբոսաշրջային նպատակներով։ Կամրջի վերականգնումը կարող է նաեւ խթան հանդիսանալ համայնքի բնակիչների սոցիալ-տնտեսական զարգացման համար», - լրագրողների հետ զրույցում ասաց «Պատմամշակութային արգելոց-թանգարանների եւ պատմական միջավայրի պահպանության ծառայության» ՊՈԱԿ-ի տնօրեն Վլադիմիր Պողոսյանը։

 

Հայաստանում ԱՄՆ դեսպանատան հասարակայնության հետ կապերի բաժնի մշակույթի հարցերով կցորդ Շոն Օ Հարայի համոզմամբ, Հայաստանն օրհնված երկիր է, քանի որ մեծ թվով պատմամշակութային արժեքներ ունի, որը պիտի պահպանի։

 

«800 տարի գոյություն ունեցող հուշարձանը, կարծում եմ առնվազն 800 տարի էլ կանգուն կլինի։ Այս հուշարձանը մի կողմից կամուրջ է Հայաստանի ու միացյալ նահանգների, մյուս կողմից՝ Հայաստանի անցյալ ու ապագայի միջեւ»- իր խոսքում նշեց Շոն Օ Հարան։ Դեսպանատան ներկայացուցիչն աշխատանքների այս փուլի ընթացքը գոհացնող համարեց։

 

Կամուրջը կվերկանգնվի նույն գույնի տուֆով ինչպիսին ունեցել է կամարն ու թառը։ Հիշեցնենք, որ Ազատ գետի վրա կառուցված կամուրջը Գառնի գյուղը կապում է գետի ձախ ափին գտնվող Հավուց Թառ եւ այլ նշանավոր վանական համալիրների եւ հուշարձանների հետ: Կառուցված է կրաշաղախով կապակցված բազալտով, իսկ թաղը եւ ճակատային որմնակամարները կարմիր եւ սեւ սրբատաշ տուֆե շարվածքով: Կամուրջը նախկինում մի քանի անգամ վերանորոգվել է /XVII-XVIII դարերի ընթացքում/, իսկ 2009թ. Պետբյուջեից հատկացված միջոցներով սրբատաշ տուֆ քարով երեսպատվել եւ արդեն մասնակի վերանորոգվել է կամրջի մի մասը, որը սակայն, վթարային վիճակում էր հայտնվել։

«Մանկական Նոր ալիք 2012» մրցույթին Հայաստանը ներկայացնող Սոնա Գյուլխասյանը գրավել է երկրորդ հորիզոնականը: Երկու մրցութային օրերի ընթացքում, հավաքելով առավելագույն միավորներ, Սոնան ընդամենը մեկ միավորով զիջել է Ուկրաինայի ներկայացուցչին: Այդ մասին հայտնում է «Արմենպրես»-ը:

 

Մրցույթի հայաստանյան պատվիրակության մամլո քարտուղար Մհեր Բաղդասարյանը Ղրիմից նախօրեին հայտնել էր, որ Սոնան մրցույթի ֆավորիտների թվում էր: Մրցութային առաջին օրը Սոնան կատարել է Բեյոնսեի «Listen», երկրորդ օրը` Անի Քրիստիի «Կարոտ» երգը:

Մրցույթն անց է կացվում օգոստոսի 15-ից 17-ը: Համաձայն մրցույթի կանոնադրության` «Մանկական Նոր ալիք»-ը չի հեռարձակվում ուղիղ եթերով, այլ ցուցադրվում է մրցույթին մասնակցած երկրներից հեռարձակման իրավունք ձեռք բերած հեռուստատեսություններով մրցույթի ավարտից օրեր անց: Հայաստանում մրցույթի հեռարձակուման իրավունքը պատկանում է «Արմենիա» հեռուստաընկերույունը: Մրցույթին մասնակցում են 16 մասնակիցներ 12 երկրներից: Երիտասարդ կատարողների շրջանում հայտնի այս միջազգային մրցույթի բացման հանդիսավոր արարողությանը օգոստոսի 15-ին ներկա է գտնվել նաեւ Ուկրաինայի նախագահ Վիկտոր Յանուկովիչը:

2012 թ-ի սկզբին Հայաստանից արտահանվող մրգերի եւ բանջարեղենների արտահանումը ավելացել է 85 տոկոսով

2012թ.-ին Հայաստանից արտահանվող մրգերի եւ բանջարեղենների արտահանումը ավելացել է 85 տոկոսով: Այս մասին այսօր` օգոստոսի 22-ին լրագրողներին հայտնել է Հայաստանի գյուղնախարարության փոխնախարար Ռոբերտ Մակարյանը: Օգոստոսի 21-ի տվյալներով` Հայաստանից արտահանվել է 17 հազար 630 տոննա պտուղ եւ բանջարեղեն, որոնցից 12 հազար 593 տ. ծիրան, 1163 տ. խաղող, 1105տ. բալ, 2 հազար 37 տ. բանջարեղեն:

 

2011 թ.-ին այս նույն ժամանակաշրջանում արտահանվել է 9 հազար 528 տոննա միրգ եւ բանջարեղեն: Ողջ 2011 թ.-ի ընթացքում արտահանվել է 16 հազար 884 տոննա միրգ եւ բանջարեղեն: «Մենք բանակցություններ ենք վարել արտահանող ընկերությունների հետ: Ներկայումս նրանք Տավուշի մարզում արտահանման են պատրաստում դեղձի մեծ քանակություն»,-նշել է փոխնախարարը:

 

Ինչպես NEWS.am-ի թղթակցի հետ զրույցում նշել է «Սպայկա» ընկերության տնօրենը, ընկերությունը մի քանի օրից դեղձի արտահանում կիրականացնի:

 

«Բերքը, ծավալի հետ մեկտեղ նաեւ կոնդիցիոն է, այդ թվում ապրանքի տեսքով: Դրա պատճառով այս տարածքից մեկ ակնկալում ենք դեղձի մեծաքանակ արտահանում»,-նշել է Կ. Բաղդասարյանը: Նրա խոսքով, 2012 թ.-ին ընկերությունը ծրագրում է արտահանվող մրգերի չափը ավելացնել մոտ երկու անգամ:

 

Հունիսին ծիրանի եւ բալի վաղ հասունացման հետեւանքով տեղի ունեցող ոչ պլանային գնումների պատճառով ընկերությունը նոր բերքի գնման համար շրջանառու միջոցների պակասություն է ունենում: «Ներկայումս խնդիրը մոտ է լուծմանը»,-ավելացրել է Կ. Բաղդասարյանը:

 

Մեկ այլ արտահանող ընկերության «Արմենֆուտի» տնօրեն Ահարոն Խլղաթյանը նույնպես նշել է 2012 թ.-ի հաջող բերքի մասին` հատուկ ընդգծելով ծիրանի արտահանումն ու դեղձի արտահանման պատրաստությունը:

 

Գյուղնախարարության տվյալներով 2012 թ.-ի ընդհանուր արտահանման ծավալը կազմել է 28.9 հազար տոննա, որից 14,9 հազար տ. ծիրան է, 10,3 տ. խաղող, 2,6 հազար տ. դեղձ եւ 4,3 տ.` բանջարեղեն: Սպասված արդյունքները 2011 թ.-ի ցուցանիշին կգերազանցի 16,4 հազար տոննայով (մոտ 130 տոկոս):

For 13 years Women in Business commendations have been awarded to exceptional women from the local communities who are leaders and role models. On Friday at the Pasadena Hilton the awardees were recognized by the 21st Senate District and the 43rd and 44th Assembly Districts represented by State Senator Carol Liu and Assemblymembers Mike Gatto and Anthony Portantino, respectively.

 

Lunch followed updates given by the three legislators. Keynote speaker Nagin Cox of NASA/JPL then spoke on the technology that put NASA’s Curiosity rover on the surface of Mars. Her remarks brought a standing ovation.

 

Then the 30 honorees were introduced. Two especially outstanding women from Glendale were Ramella Markarian, of Glendale Adventist Medical Center, and Lt. Lola Abrahamian, currently a police lieutenant at the Glendale Police Dept.

 

Markarian received an “Outstanding Nonprofit Employee award. She is the director of physician development at the hospital. Among her many accomplishments, Markarian is president of the Armenian American Medical Society’s Ladies Auxiliary, which established Glendale Healthy Women. That organization ensures that uninsured women receive free access to health education and mammograms.

 

Abrahamian was recognized with a “Women in Law” award. She oversees the Glendale Police Dept.’s Criminal Investigations Bureau. Her community volunteerism includes active membership in Soroptimist International of Glendale.

 

Portantino said that as of 2012, “there are more than 8.3 million women-owned businesses in the U.S., generating nearly $1.3 trillion in revenue and employing nearly 7.7 million people.”

NORMAN MILLER OPENS DOORS OF OPPORTUNITY TO A NEW GENERATION OF

ARMENIAN ENGINEERS

New York, NY - The late Norman Miller, born Norair Deirmengian on the

eve of the Armenian genocide, was a master of doors. Early in his

career, he developed the first electrically activated safety edge for

hangar doors. Word spread quickly through the U.S. military, and

strategic air command bases around the world began purchasing them.

Soon after, Norman was awarded the first of many U.S. patents that he

received over this long and successful life.

 

 

So the `full circle' irony hasn't been lost when one considers how a

man whose career revolved around doors is the same one opening doors

for Armenia's and Karabakh's future engineers - through the Norman

Miller Scholarship Fund.

 

Mr. Miller passed away in 2009 at the age of 94, survived by his wife

Virginia, his five children and 10 grandchildren. His awe-inspiring

transcontinental life story is one of open doors leading to other open

doors. In this way, he could rise from the ashes of the 1915 genocide

to become the embodiment of the American Dream - as an entrepreneur,

inventor, businessman, patriot and philanthropist.

 

After settling in Philadelphia, graduating from the University of

Pennsylvania business school, serving in World War II while still not

yet a citizen, Mr. Miller eventually wound up owning his own company

Miller Edge. It began manufacturing safety products for the overhead

door industry. The business grew to expand its product line to include

edge sensors for industrial and commercial doors and motorized gates.

In the 1970's, Norman transformed the sensing technology by adding

pressure sensitive floor mats to protect robotic work cells as well as

smaller touch-sensitive strips for machinery pinch point protection

and door edges for transit vehicles.

 

These successes equipped Norman with the resources to live out his

desire to help others open new doors to opportunity and reach their

full potential as he did. Armenia was fertile ground.

 

`We are truly grateful for this opportunity to make a difference in

the lives of youth through his higher education scholarship program,

endowed by Mr. Miller's family foundation. With this initiative, young

engineering students will be motivated and inspired by Norman's own

life story and how he used his successes to help change lives,`

remarked Irina Lazarian, executive director of Armenia Fund USA.

 

The scholarship isn't the only legacy that Mr. Miller has left to his

ancestral homeland. A few years back, he was as instrumental in

bringing clean potable water to the village of Nor Getashan, located

in war-torn Karabakh. Thanks to his funding of a new water delivery

system, villagers could put away their buckets used for carrying well

water and enjoy drinking water right in their own homes as well as at

the town's school.

 

Prior to that, Mr. Miller found a most inventive mission by which to

help the victims of the 1988 Armenian Earthquake. He spearheaded a

collection of copiers and fax machines, had them refurbished and

repaired in the warehouse of his company, packed them with donated

clothing as cushioning, and shipped them to Armenia. Norman believed

that if the people could see how communications could be a door

leading out of the devastation, they could help themselves recover.

 

It is also fitting that Armenia Fund would be chosen to administer the

scholarship, given that engineering plays such a critical role in

practically every infrastructure project it has undertaken over the

past 20 years - from highways, reservoirs and pipelines to electronic

networks, indoor plumbing, agricultural machinery, farming equipment

and more.

 

`Building a nation that is built to last requires an army of

engineers, not only with the professional credentials but also a deep

understanding of their country, its society, and the challenges it is

up against. Native Armenians can do this in ways that no other outside

engineer really could. Without such engineers working with us on the

ground, many of our projects would not get off the drawing board,` Ms.

Lazarian noted.

 

Another reason why the scholarship is so critical is that when Armenia

became independent, the introduction of a tuition-based system in

colleges and universities often made higher education unaffordable for

distinguished high school graduates. As the scholarship will grant

funds to students with exceptional qualities, it will help level the

playing field so that talent and ambition will not be thwarted by

financial constraints.

 

Since the availability of funds as well as the number of recipients

depend solely on the interest accrued annually and is therefore

subject to change, a rigorous selection process has been established.

This will ensure that the most deserving candidates are awarded. These

requirements can be adjusted in future years, but the current criteria

is as follows:

 

In addition to the candidate not benefiting from any tuition free

education system, he or she is required to be enrolled full-time in a

qualified technical or engineering high school academy, college or

university in the regions of Gyumri, Vanadzor or Artsakh, as the

starting points. They are also to meet academic subject grade

requirements.

 

Once those criteria are met, preference is given to students who may

also reside in border villages, are orphans or children of

single-parent households or foster homes, have a physical disability,

are actively involved in student life or have proven leadership and

organizational skills through involvement in extracurricular and

service-based volunteer activities.

 

A seven-member commission, formed at the discretion of the Hayastan

All-Armenian Fund Executive Director, decides the allocation of funds

and the final recipients.

 

`All we ask in return is that the student acknowledge and accept the

Foundation's conditions and assume moral obligation to assist needy

students in the future, if ever in a position to do so, `stated Ms.

Lazarian.

 

`We encourage these students to try to exemplify Mr. Miller's own

advice: `Education is never ending. Always strive to better yourself

and use your knowledge to help improve the lives of those around you'.

We hope these students will aim higher in everything they do, aspiring

for the exceptional,' she added.

 

Surely, the story of Norman Miller will inspire these students to help

turn Armenia and Karabakh into powerhouses of engineering

expertise - producing world-class professionals involved in challenging

and rewarding work right in their own communities.

 

`After all,' says Khoren Bandazian, chairman of Armenia Fund USA,

`the work of nation building is never done. There will always be a

need for talented engineers, in all specialties - software, civil,

chemical, electrical, mechanical and so forth - to keep the society and

THE SHOES OF THE GIRL FROM ARTSAKH AND THE WAR IN SYRIA

Recently the youth of Artsakh is more and more actively discussing

issues of helping the Armenians from Syria. In this connection

different people make concrete proposals in Facebook webpages.

 

Moreover, these proposals can be found in the media as well.

 

In his letter Patara village inhabitant Stepan Grigoryan, Askeran

region, on behalf of his fellow-villagers expresses willingness

of receiving Armenians from Syria and hopes that this will set the

beginning of a new big action. The young man is ready to provide his

second house in the village free for living. At least five families

in Patara are ready to do the same, he notes.

 

People are also trying to find their acquaintances from Syria. One

of such attempts is described by journalist from Artsakh Lousine

Mousayelyan in her Facebook page. Here is her story: "Today is a

memorable day for me, I can hardly restrain my emotions, she writes

and continues, it was two years the war had been over, I was 10 or

11 years old. During those years there was no electricity in our

houses, but at the square there were some lanterns lighting and as

our house was near the square we went to play there together with

several children from our yard.

 

One day when playing we saw a group of tourists pass along the square

and a girl from this group came up to me and asked the way to the

theatre. I explained to her and the girl asked me to accompany her to

the place if it was not too far away. It was not far from our place

and I agreed to accompany her. She was from the Armenian Diaspora. We

walked to the theatre, on the way she asked me different questions

such as what my name was, whether I had sisters and brothers, what my

parents were, where we lived, what I dreamed of and so on. I told her

everything and saw her get excited at my story. Later when we reached

the square and I had to bid farewell to her she gave me five thousand

drams and said, "I am leaving tomorrow and I will not manage to buy a

gift for you, take this money, please, and buy a present for yourself

in my name."

 

However I refused to take the money nothing came of it. I remember to

say, "What will I answer my mother if she asks where I took the money

from?" She said to tell my mother that Arpi Sanosyan from Syria gave

it to me. I thanked her much, said good-bye and went home.

 

The next day together with my mother we went to the market /then

there hardly were any shops in the town/ and bought a pair of shoes

for me, black round-toed shoes. In those days all my classmates wore

patent-leather low-heeled shoes and they wondered where I found those

old-fashioned shoes from.

 

I always remembered the story of Arpi Sanosyan.

 

When the Internet first appeared in Karabakh and when I realized the

essence and use of it the first thing I did was to search the name

of Arpi Sanosyan first in Yandex, then in Rambler, in Yahoo, Google,

Skype and finally in Facebook pages. I could not find her anyway.

 

I was eager to find her and say that I remembered her.

 

Recently since the war broke out in Syria the thought of finding

Arpi Sanosyan has haunted me. I began to write to all the people in

Facebook whose second name was Sanosyan and eventually after all my

efforts I managed to find a phone number.

 

After 37 attempts to call the number I heard an answer.

 

- Hello.

 

- Hello, Arpi, is it you?

 

- Yes, who is it?

 

- I am calling from Karabakh, probably you will not remember me,

but if you have some time I will try to remind you.

 

- Is your name Lousine?

 

- Yes, it is.

 

- How are you, my dear, what about your mother and sisters? Probably

you have grown older, I remember you, of course, and I cannot believe

that you also remembered and found me. How could you find my phone

number?

 

I could hardly answer her, I only thanked her and asked what I could

do for her."
