Turkish authorities committed vandalism in Armenian cemetery

ANKARA. – Turkish Malatsia city hall destroyed a construction built by the Armenian Union of Malatsia (HAYDER), which should have served for an administrative guard-stop for the cemetery and to hold memorial services.

 

The city hall sent machinery and workers to equal the construction to the ground on Thursday. To note, no representative of the Union was at the scene, CNNTurk reports.

 

Armenian community in Istanbul and members of the Union were shocked and demanded the authorities an explanation. Head of the Union claimed they had permission to build it. However, the building is destroyed together with their trust.

 

They first had planned to put down the roof and warned beforehand about it. However, the workers misunderstood and destroyed the building completely, Malatsia city Mayor Ahmet Cakir said in the interview with Agos Armenian newspaper.

Թուրքիայի Մալաթիայի քաղաքապետարանը քանդել է Մալաթիայի հայերի գերեզմանոցում Մալաթիայի հայերի միության (HAYDER) միջոցներով կառուցվող շինությունը, որը պետք է ծառայեր որպես պահակատուն եւ հոգեհանգստի եւ վայր։

 

Թուրքական CNNturk-ի փոխանցմամբ՝ Մալաթիայի քաղաքապետարանը փետրվարի 2-ին տեխնիկա եւ բանվորներ է ուղարկել հայկական գերեզմանոց, որտեղ հայ համայնքից ոչ ոք չի եղել։ Այնուհետ նոր կառուցվող շինությունը հողին են հավասարեցրել։

 

Ստամբուլի հայկական համայնքն ու Մալաթիայի հայերի միության անդամները շոկի մեջ են ընկել՝ իմանալով այս լուրը եւ պարզաբանումներ պահանջել իշխանություններից։

 

Մալաթիայի հայերի միության նախագահ Խոսրով Քյոլեթավիթօղլուն նշել է, թե իրենք շինարարությունը սկսել են թույլտվություն ստանալուց հետո։ «Մենք ընդամենը կառուցում էինք գերեզմանոցի համար պահակատուն եւ հանգուցյալների համար հոգեհանգստի վայր։ Ամեն ինչ ավիրեցին։ Մեր վստահությունն էլ ավիրեցին։ Վիրավորված էինք, ավելի վիրավորվեցինք»,-ասել է HAYDER-ի նախագահը՝ շեշտելով, որ իրենք ցանկանում են կրկին կառուցել նույն շենքը։

MALATYA MUNICIPALITY IN TURKEY AGREES TO REBUILD DEMOLISHED ARMENIAN SHRINE

PanARMENIAN.Net - The municipality in the eastern Turkish province

of Malatya has agreed to rebuild a complex involving a chapel, a

guard house and an annex for washing the dead inside a historical

Armenian cemetery after municipal workers demolished it on Feb 3,

Hurriyet Daily News reported.

 

"The folk in the street cried when they saw that our 'Last Prayer'

[complex] was demolished. I don't think it to be 'neighborhood

pressure.' There is some pressure, but it emanates from sources unknown

to us," Hosrof Köletavitoglu, the head of the Malatya Philanthropists'

Association (HAYDER), said.

 

Malatya Municipality said that the guard house had been brought down

due to complaints issued by the local populace and that the chapel

had been mistakenly demolished.

 

"They had said the guard box wasn't suitable here and decided to

demolish [it.] Now they are taking over the construction of the

entire complex by themselves," Köletavitoglu said on behalf of a

group of Malatya Armenians residing in Istanbul who met with officials

regarding the matter on Feb 6 morning.

 

The municipality promised to push forward with the project without

making any additional changes, Köletavitoglu said, adding they were

also going to certify that promise in the governor's office through

a notary.

 

"We are going to purse this to the end," he said. "We had just

built the complex with money we collected from Armenians of Malatya

[residing] in Istanbul and the diaspora. The demolition came about

just as we were finishing it."

 

The project had originally been drawn up by the Patriarchate of

Turkish-Armenians.

 

The cemetery which measures thousands of acres in size also contains

the burial grounds of the family members of Hrant Dink, the chief

editor of the weekly Agos, who was gunned down in front of his office

in Istanbul on Jan 19, 2007.

 

"We were going to hold a mass by organizing a tour on June 30 to

bring Armenians originating from Malatya here. It will be a little

difficult to hold the mass under these circumstances," he said.

 

The Turkish authorities nationalized the cemetery in the late 1940s,

while only some two acres are still owned by the Armenian community.

MALATYA, FEBRUARY 6, ARMENPRESS: After demolition of the annexes of

the Armenian graveyard in Malatya in February 2, the Turkish warden

of the graveyard has been threatened with death, Armenpress reports.

 

Najie Chaleshkan, the warden, said in an interview with CNNTurk

that after demolishing the newly-built annexes by permission of the

Mayor's Office, they began disturbing her. "People of the neighborhood

disturb me for being a warden here. They often break the windows of the

watchhouse and demolish the tombs. They call me "gavur" (nonbeliever).

 

Their children do not play with mine. I am very afraid, we are not

safe at all as we are always threatened with death," the Turkish

woman warden of the Armenian graveyard complained.

Chapel in Armenian cemetery restored

The chapel and the outbuildings in the Armenian cemetery in Turkish city of Malatya, earlier demolished by the city hall, have been restored by the government and will be transferred to the city’s Armenian community.

The chapel will open its doors on June 29, Taraf paper reported citing the head of the Armenian union HAYder Khosrov Keleravitoglu. This year cultural tours will be organized to the chapel, Holy Trinity Armenian Monastery and St. Gregory the Illuminator.
