Sip Posted April 19, 2002 Report Share Posted April 19, 2002 Anyone here use GPS for hiking, backbacking, hunting, driving, etc? If so what device and software? How do you like it? Anyone use the TOPO Maps that Garmin sells? (I am having some problems with topos and the eMap ... but I am also using their MetroGuide maps) I have been using the eMap from Garmin for a couple of years now. It's just excellent ... I don't use paper maps anymore but still carry them sometimes "just in case" Like when I was in Paris last summer, my eMap wouldn't lock since it was a cloudy day and there were a bunch of buildings around. I was totally lost for a while until this old guy who couldn't speak english helped me out. It was a hundred miles from Anchorage in Alaska I think but I am not exactly sure. Those bars show the sattelites and the signal strength. I could see about 12 satelites with VERY good signal levels. Here in California, Nevada, and Arizona, I can barely get 4 or 5 satellites. I didn't get a chance to play with it much in Europe and when it did work, I could see about 3 satellites with good signal. But the sky was very cloudy ... In Alaska, the signal was so good, I could drive by just looking at the GPS screen especially since there was no one else on the roads. It was tracking the road perfectly!!! Hyeflyer Posted April 22, 2002 Report Share Posted April 22, 2002 I have used the gps on my friends fishing graph when fishing the great lakes and it has put us within 1 meter of the location we fished the month before.Before that it was maps and sonar to find the bottom structure and that was a 50-50 chance to get within 100 meters of a location we fished before.It is very usefull fishing tool but I have never used it on land.I have been told I have the instincts of a homing pigeon on land.I have never been lost just a little confused for a month or two. Have owned for close to 3 years now, it’s cool I love it, even though I can not use all of the futures, but it’s handy, and has helped me many times. I mostly use it for long distains driving, when I do 4willing and hunting. But I think it’s getting old, I need to update it soon, the only sad part is I have so many rods and wave points witch I have marked in 3 years, I do not know if I can save it and use it in my new unit. I found a unit/ antenna that you can connect to your laptop. Sip Posted April 29, 2002 Author Report Share Posted April 29, 2002 The laptop ones work pretty well since you have a BIG screen and the software can be fairly sophisticated. The PDA versions are not as good. THe ones I have seen are very slow ... even on the 206 MHZ Ipaqs ... I would still get a handheld GPS as opposed to doing it on a PDA. You can connect most handheld gpses (like the eMAP) to laptops and use PC software Mosjan ... that GPS III Plus is very cool! I think you can download the waypoints and stuff to PC just like the emap using Garmins MapSource software ... do you have a PC cable for it? Sip Posted May 5, 2002 Author Report Share Posted May 5, 2002 Yes. Mapsource is Garmin's map software. You can use it to plan trips (which I have never used) and to download additional maps into the GPS (like street maps and topological maps). It can also be used to save tracks and logs from the GPS to the PC. The only thing I really use it for is to download extra maps to my eMap. I got the extra 32MB memory so I can fit a lot of maps. I am not sure how much memory the GPS III has but I am guessing it is not enough to download new maps (I am not sure on this). Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Agsystems(http://www.beeline.com.au/) is combining GPS with tractors. A GPS equipped tractor is unaffected by poor light, glare or dust and can work 24 hours a day without any stops (if there's enough fuel, of course). The new plowing technique reduces overlap and hence the input costs on all farming operations. It is also possible to write special tractor tracking software and visualize the plowing. Normal GPS can be off by several meters (if not more) sometimes. Differential GPS, which uses additional signals generated on earth in addition to satellites, can be very accurate EDIT: Oh of course I am talking about the civilian GPS where the US Department of Defense INTENTIONALLY screws up the signal. There is always the military signals which are very very accurate from what I hear (but is encrypted for obvious reasons). It actually could be hooked to all the above that you listed. But I wonder what happens if there is an obstacle in front of it or a cat or a dog or even worse a human being. Sip - I seem to remember about 5-6 months ago a news story on NPR that US was going to allow new GPS systems to be off by only 1 feet.
