One of the news items reported that hospitals in Afrin had gone over capacity during the Turkish military operation, another dealt with the day attacks by Turkish forces reached the town centre. The agreement also permitted ISIS to runlogistical lines across the border and to transport wounded fightersback into Turkey for medical treatment.”At the helm of this sinister ISIS smuggling operation is a 36-year-oldSaudi-born Turk, Ilhami Bali, with the code name Abu Bakr. Additionally, the wiretaps show the Turkishgovernment knew the names and locations of 33 Turkish nationals whopledged to work as drivers in ISIS’s smuggling network,” Bozkurtreported.According to indictments filed by Turkish prosecutors, “Bali isaccused of being the mastermind behind three deadly 2015 terroristattacks in Turkey’s capital city, Ankara, that claimed the lives of142 people. A year later, a criminal court issued another warrant forBalı’s arrest for his alleged role in a suicide bomb attack—thedeadliest in Turkey’s history—on October 10, 2015 in Ankara. Theexplosion killed 105 civilians, including the two suicide bombers, asISIS militants targeted NGOs and the supporters of left-wing andpro-Kurdish parties, who were holding a peace rally outside the city’smain train station weeks ahead of the November 1, 2015 snapelections,” Bozkurt revealed. Although the Turkish authorities knewBali’s exact location and Turkish courts issued several arrestwarrants against him, the Erdogan government had let him roam freelybetween Turkey and Syria.The wiretap records also indicated that ISIS had a hot line betweenthe terrorists in Syria and Turkey. Bali monitored the phone calls andorganized the transfer of militants from Turkey to Syria. In onewiretap, a Georgian militant named Lasha Nadirashvili told Bali thatfour jihadists were awaiting pickup at a shopping mall in Gaziantep,one hour drive from the Syrian border. Bali notified the jihadists thedesignated meeting place where he would pick them up and help themcross the border. In another wiretap, a Russian jihadist OleksandrPushchuk told Bali that 11 jihadists in Gaziantep were waiting to bepicked up.Bali was also heard on a wiretap giving a report to ISIS on the numberof jihadists he had helped smuggle into Syria. “On average, in asingle day at one crossing point, ISIS smuggles anywhere from 50 tomore than 100 militants across the Turkish-Syrian border according towiretaps, bringing yearly conservative estimates to well over 15,000smuggled individuals,” Bozkurt wrote.Another important service Bali provided for jihadists was theirmedical treatment at M.I.S. Danismanlik hospital in Ankara. Onewiretap revealed a conversation between Bali and M.I.S. Danismanlik’sowner Savas Dogru regarding a $62,000 payment for treating 16 ISISmilitants. In another conversation, Dogru complained about unpaidbills of $150,000 for surgeries to ISIS terrorists smuggled fromSyria.The wiretaps also implicated MIT (Turkish National IntelligenceOrganization) for helping jihadists evade the local police. HakanFidan, the head of MIT, is a close confidante of Pres. Erdogan. In2014, MIT officers were caught at the border smuggling truck-loads ofweapons for jihadists in Syria. The Turkish government quicklyreleased the MIT officers and charged with treason the reporter whodisclosed the smuggled weapons.In a recorded conversation between Bali and a Turkish soldier, Baliwas told that he would get whatever he needed. The two agreed toensure that there was no confrontation between ISIS and Turkishsecurity guards.Surprisingly, then-Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced ontelevision that the government could not arrest suicide bombers untilthey acted, even though Turkey had advance warning and the list ofnames of potential suicide bombers. These suicide bombings in factboosted Erdogan’s ruling party’s ratings in advance of the November2015 Turkish parliamentary elections.Bozkurt went on to state that there are serious questions regarding“cases involving ISIS, al-Qaeda and other armed jihadist groups [who]are being investigated, prosecuted, and tried in Turkey. Theastonishingly low number of convictions in ISIS cases illustrates howthe government is unwilling to successfully prosecute ISIS cases.”Bozkurt correctly pointed out that Erdogan’s government uses draconianmeasures to arrest innocent journalists, human rights activists,academics and political opponents, but is very lenient on realterrorists: “The fact that, in many cases, detained ISIS and al-Qaedamembers have been let go with a mere slap on the wrist can only beexplained by the political cover and protection provided by thegovernment.”In my opinion, the European countries and the United States have totake strong measures to curtail Erdogan’s support of terrorists inSyria. It is strange that Turkey as a NATO member is aiding and armingterrorists who have been committing murders in several other NATOcountries. This cannot be allowed to continue. Pres. Trump’s announcedpull-out of American forces from Syria under the pretext that theTurkish military will continue the fight against ISIS is a dangerousdecision which will give Turkey a free hand to strengthen theterrorists in Syria and elsewhere. The deminer received a foot injury and was immediately transported to hospital and operated on.His life is not in danger. Government forces had held complete control of Aleppo since capturing what was then Syria's largest city in a siege in 2016, one of the major turning points of a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people. The head of Syria's main opposition group abroad, Hadi al-Bahra, told Reuters the rebels were able to seize the city so quickly because Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups were distracted by their conflict with Israel. Preparations had been made since last year for an assault on Aleppo, but it was held up by the war in Gaza, he said. Syria's civil war had been frozen since 2020, with Assad in control of most territory and all major cities. Rebels still held an enclave in the northwest, Turkey-backed forces held a strip along the northern border and U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led forces controlled a pocket in the northeast. Iraqi and Syrian sources confirmed the deployment of more Iran-backed Iraqi fighters to Syria. Iran's Foreign Minister said Tehran "will provide any support needed" and that "resistance groups" would come to Assad's aid. At least 300 fighters, primarily from Iraq's Badr and Nujabaa groups, crossed late on Sunday using a dirt road to avoid the official border crossing, two Iraqi security sources said, adding that they were there to defend a Shi'ite shrine. A senior Syrian military source said the fighters had crossed in small groups to avoid airstrikes. "These are fresh reinforcements being sent to aid our comrades on the front lines in the north," the source said. The first group of Syrian-Armenians is expected to arrive to Armenia on December 14, Hovhannes Alexanyan, the Head of the Department of Repatriates Integration at the Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs said at a media event about the situation in Aleppo. He said an evacuation will be possible only in the appropriate conditions. Alexanyan said some Syrian-Armenian families were able to flee Aleppo in the immediate aftermath of the city’s takeover by anti-government forces. The families have found shelter in Damascus, Latakia and Kessab. The Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs maintains contact with them. “According to our data there are around 10-12 thousand [Syrian] Armenians in Aleppo,” Alexanyan said. Vulnerable families receive support from various charity organizations. The Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia has provided funds for relief efforts through its diocese. Alexanyan said the Armenian authorities are closely following the developments and are ready to provide help at any moment. “At this moment it is impossible to organize evacuation or deliver aid. In case of an opportunity to do so, it could be considered, but there is no such opportunity now. The airport and industrial zone of Aleppo is now under the control of Islamist groups. There is no guarantee of safe evacuation of large numbers of people,” Alexanyan said. The first group of Syrian-Armenians who were able to flee the danger zone will arrive to Armenia via a Damascus-Yerevan flight on December 14, he said. “We are ready to receive our compatriots at any hour and deal with their issues. The free healthcare program for Syrian-Armenians, which was introduced years earlier, is still in force, and we are ready to look into the needs of our compatriots within the framework of this program. We also call on our partner organizations to implement joint programs,” the official said. Meanwhile, human rights expert Sergey Ghazinyan from the Center for European Studies at the Yerevan State University, said that the Syrian-Armenians who do not have Armenian citizenship must apply for a refugee status immediately after crossing into Armenia. The Armenian community in North and East Syria has declared a general mobilisation in response to Turkey’s military operations in the region. Following the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria’s (AANES) announcement on 1 December, Armenians pledged to stand with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in their resistance. The statement was read at the Syriac Unity Centre in Hasakah’s Nasira neighbourhood by the Syriac Women’s Union. It accused Turkey of attempting to revive Ottoman-era ambitions. “Under Erdoğan’s leadership, Turkey seeks to resurrect the Ottoman project, thwarted by the SDF’s defeat of ISIS in Baghouz,” the statement said. The announcement also alleged that Turkey used armed groups like ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra to seize control of Aleppo and surrounding villages. Highlighting Aleppo’s historical and cultural importance, it stated that the Armenian community would never accept its annexation by Turkey. The Armenians emphasised their determination not to remain silent in the face of occupation or allow a repetition of the genocides perpetrated during the Ottoman era. The statement also called for solidarity among Syria’s diverse communities and reiterated the community’s readiness to welcome displaced people fleeing the violence.
