Arpa
ՁԿՆԵՐՁուկ FISHRemember that in the English “fish” is both singular and plural just like “sheep”.Here at post #25 Zartonk suggested; http://hyeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=15722&st=0&p=194468&hl=palm%20sunday&fromsearch=1entry194468 Posted 06 April 2007 - 05:49 PM I think we should start a thread about Armenian fish (aquatic nationalities )...or rather fish among Armenians. They are, as we know, well present in our folklore & mythology. And we should start off with the great Ishkhan…OK, Let us.As always, that so called encyclopedia SAE stinks. In the monograph ՁԿՆԵՐ they talk about the biology of fish blah, blah, blah , not even a word about the native fish of Armenia. At the end it refers to a pictorial plate in Vol. 7 where we see pictures of anchovy, catfish, eels, pyrranha, sardines and shark. I could not find a site in the Armenian language…Here is one in English.OK You guys and gals, I will not name names, they know who they are, you officionados, be they fishermen, vegetarians, cuisinal engineers, let’s see what the Armenian names of the following are. Me? I don't even know the Anglo-Latins names, let alone the Armnian. Do we have "fish heads" here? Not you Sip, the "cheese-head" Seriously. Who knows about about Armenian fish recipes? We will come back and see if we can find them.. one at a time.Naturally, when we speak about the aquatic animal life of Armenia we automatically think of Sevan. See all the other waters, be they rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, even swamps ճահիճ like Metsamor. (We will come to this in a follow up)Of course we start at top- Sevan http://www.armeniainfo.am/activities/?section=hunting FishingLake SevanThe serene beauty of Lake Sevan is also the home to a rich and rare collection of fish. A famous species of trout called the Salmon Trout (Ishkhan) or "Prince Fish,"( I corrected the typo where the original read "price", not "prince". Was it a "freudian slip"? (i.e "pricy-expensive")? is the signature fish of the lake. Changes in the ecosystem of the lake combined with extensive fishing had reduced numbers of this rare fish, but recent efforts in conservationism as well as the growth of the fish-farming industry have helped revitalize the Prince fish. Other fish found in Sevan include trout, siga, crucian, carp and crayfish as well as koghak and bakhtak.Echmiadzin LakesEchmiadzin town has many small lakes where you can catch karas and trout.Spandaryan, Tolors and Shamb ReservoirsSpandaryan, Tolors and Shamb Reservoirs are the swimming grounds of similar types of fish, including beghlu, karas, carp, and rainbow trout. In the rivers' streams and tributaries one can come across brown trout and carp.Hrazdan River In the Hrazdan River karas and crayfish are plentiful.Araks RiverThe Araks River is the home to many species of fish including sezan, loko (a kind of cat fish), tolstolobik, karas, tarap, and karmrakhait.Alagyaz LakePerched near the top of Aragats Mountain, at a dizzying height of 3200 meters is the bucolic and pastoral Stone Lake (Alagyaz Lake). It is truly an extraordinary place for fishing, given the natural wonder of the idyllic surroundings. Mantash ReservoirThe Mantash Reservoir, situated in Shirak Region is one of the most beautiful places in Armenia. Containing over 8 million cubic meters of water at an altitude of 2,600 meters above sea level, the reservoir is a favorite destination for fishermen determined to catch the famed Alabalagh Trout abounding in these chilly waters.Jrapi ReservoirThe Jrapi Reservoir is located near the scenic Akhuryan Reservoir (also known as "Turki Lich") through which the Armenian-Turkish border runs. Though much of the reservoir is off-limits to the public, there are adjacent waterways conducive to swimming and fishing. A famous 11th Century Caravansaray and an old church were relocated to a hill overlooking Jrapi when the reservoir was built, making for an attractive locale for hikers and picnickers alike. The ancient Tignis monastery and fortress are visible across the border in Turkey, reminders of Armenia's past and beacons of hope for its future. Arpa
Before we proceed let us see this farcical fable, another Armenian joke out of the way. See the story from ArmeniaNow below. When did Armenia become the fishing capital of the world?Unless of course our friends, the “first and best Christians” the inventors of Christianity want us to believe this. When is the last time the average Yerevanite had an Խորուած Իշխան/Ishkhan Khorwats? Matt.14[17] And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.[19] And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.[20] And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.[21] And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. And here we see what Jesus said about Fishermen;Of course now we know who those fishy fishermen are today, the likes of jewhovas and other septic sects Matt.4[18] And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.[19] And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. «Իմ յետևի՛ց եկէք, և ես ձեզ մարդկանց որսորդներ պիտի դարձնեմ»։ http://www.armenianow.com/economy/business/27159/armenian_government_export_fish Fishy statement: Armenian government promises to promote fish exportBy Karine IonesyanArmeniaNow reporter This year the Government of Armenia will promote the export of fish from Armenia according to a statement by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan. Fish farmers, however, are skeptical of the claim. Sargsyan has not specified how the program will be implemented, however, since last year the idea of exporting Armenian trout and surgeon not only to Russia and Georgia but also to European countries and the United States has been speculated. “After the economic crisis, when fish export to Russia was suspended, its recovery last year, as well as founding a fish shop in Kaliningrad to sell fish only from Armenia, was a great achievement for us,” Vahagn Martirosyan, head of the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of Armenia, told ArmeniaNow. (About 20-40 percent of the fish export annually was through the Kaliningrad agreement.) Director of the Union of Fish-Breeders Artur Atoyan says that annually 250 companies produce 3,000-3,500 tons of fish, mainly trout and surgeon, about 320 tons of which were exported last year. “This year the process was suspended, and no favorable conditions are created for fish producers to consume their product even in the domestic market; and it is not excluded that next year the number of fish producers will fall by 85 percent,” Atoyan told ArmeniaNow. He says that fish producers are now required to install water meters and there is additional expense for renting property – costs which will drive farmers out of business. During the Soviet period, Armenia produced 8,000 tons of carp and 400 tons of trout (annually), but after the Soviet Union collapse that production stopped, and it has been activated only recentlyhttp://www.armenianow.com/economy/business/27159/armenian_government_export_fish Edited June 1, 2011 by Arpa
