Bulgaria Demands Compensations Worth US$ 10 B from Turkey

http://paper.standartnews.com/en/article.php?d11-04-09&article=35985

SATURDAY, 9 April 2011

The Bulgarian state will demand compensations from Turkey for

Bulgarians who fled Eastern Thrace (European Turkey) amidst

repressions in the 1910s and 1920s, the Bulgarian MPs voted on Friday.

Only the MPs from the MRF expressed some concerns on this issue as

they explained they were not against the demand for compensations but

they did support the fact that the idea had been pushed forward by the

nationalistic party Ataka instead of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry.

About 800,000 Bulgarians are heirs of the Bulgarians once living in

Eastern Thrace who were forced to leave their homes in 1913 due to the

ethnic cleansing conducted by the Ottoman Empire, Ataka members

explained. The sum includes not only private real estates but also

ezarchic and church terrains and buildings and cultural monuments.

This is the first act when the Bulgarian parliament requires

compensations from Turkey for the once expelled Bulgarians. The

document was adopted at its 11th attempt as it was rejected 10 times

during the previous National Assembly.

What is interesting is that this time (for the first time) all MP's, except for the Turkish party members voted "yes" for the measure. Bulgarians are quite well aware that they will get nothing from the Turks. Simply this time, all political parties in the Parliament (except MRF _turks) need an excuse for not supporting Turkish entry into the Union.

As to the real issue it is quite controversial. Angora agreement signed 1925 indeed stipulates mutual recognition of compensations under the agreement, mainly for Thracian inhabitants. Turks are trying to stretch the boundaries of the agreement for the period before the WW I, which is unacceptable.

In our case there is no agreement at all dealing with the property of the killed or forced away Armenians. There are two bills adopted in Turkey from the same period. One is for the confiscation by the Turkish government of abandoned properties (i.e. mainly Armenian, Greek and Aramaic victims of the genocide) and the other Bill is about expropriation of the property belonging to contra revolutionary elements in republic of Turkey. Those are again Armenian and Greek properties that are not covered by the previous law. In other words if your ancestors somehow survived the Genocide, they were declared contra revolutionary and therefore their property must be confiscated by the government. This is prime example of Turkish justice and democracy :)

After all, Turks have been taking lessons from Anglo-Saxons and Jews for nearly 70 years :))

Actually Mohammad's conquests and the Koran are probably their inspiration, the Genocides and massacres were however a purely Turkish invention (if you exclude the Belgians in the Congo), as for the genocide denial campaign, that was certainly a product of the German government at the time, that several times encouraged them on to Genocide the Armenians and dispose of the 'inferior people's'. In modern times I think Margaret Thatcher is probably the most vocal supporter of Genocide denial, she is probably their greatest inspiration, before George W. Bush himself. Edited by hipeter924
