Iran Detains American Woman as Spy, Reports Say

By WILLIAM YONG and ALAN COWELL

TEHRAN — Iranian authorities have arrested a 55-year-old American woman with espionage equipment concealed in her teeth on suspicion of spying, state-controlled media said on Thursday.

The accuracy of the accounts by the IRAN newspaper and the semi-official Fars news agency could not immediately be verified and the Iranian government withheld direct comment.

People briefed on the affair, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters, said the arrest seemed confusing since the woman, identified by IRAN newspaper as Hall Talayan, had presented herself as an asylum-seeker when she entered Iran from Armenia.

By this account, the woman had told Iranian officials at the border town of Nordouz, 370 miles north-west of Tehran, that she would be killed if she returned to Armenia. She had personally vouchsafed that she had espionage equipment concealed in her teeth, these people said.

IRAN said she had arrived without a visa and Fars quoted an unidentified official as saying the woman was taken into custody about a week ago.

“The detained American spy told Iranian security officials that she would be killed if Iran extradites her to America,” the Fars report said.

If her arrest is confirmed she will be the fourth American detained in Iranian border areas and accused of spying in less than two years.

The Iranian authorities are still holding two United States citizens, Shane M. Bauer and Joshua F. Fattal, both 28, who were arrested in July 2009 on what was described as a hiking in Iraqi Kurdistan, near the Iranian border. Their companion, Sarah E. Shourd, 32, was freed on bail in September in what President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad described as a “huge humanitarian gesture.”

In late December, Iran allowed relatives to visit two German journalists detained in October as they presumably sought to report the widely publicized case of an Iranian woman who could be stoned to death for adultery.

There was no immediate comment from Armenian authorities about the latest reports and The Associated Press said the American Embassy in Yerevan, the Armenian capital, was closed for the Orthodox Christmas.

The report surfaced as Iranian officials prepare to meet again later this month in Istanbul with outside powers, including the United States, for discussions on the Iran’s nuclear program. But there was no indication that the arrest was linked to those negotiations.

William Yong reported from Tehran and Alan Cowell from London.

Is this the new James Bond movie script? :o

Yes, it is a new version of Ian Flemming's by ahmadi-james-no-jad :saddam: :jerry:

Remember Ian's opus- The Spy that came out of the Cold? As in the cold of Ararat? :goof:

Let me nominate him the comedian of the millenium only next to erbokhan.

Please, dont be fooled by his thetoric about Armenia. He is no less anti Armeno-Westen Christian than mehmet. His only interest in Armenis is thst it is the shortest way to Russia, aside from azerboobjan.

only if he would he would remove his turban, shave his face and stop persecuting and murdering Christians. Maybe then we will believe his "elleh-u-ekber".

Does he know what Astouats means?

US says American woman said jailed in Iran is free

The Associated Press

January 9, 2011 Sunday 05:15 AM GMT

An American woman reportedly arrested in Iran for espionage has been

located by U.S. officials and is safe and not in Iranian custody, the

State Department said Saturday.

"We have located the U.S. citizen who appears to have been the subject

of the reports and confirmed that the individual is safe," spokesman

Mark Toner said. "She is not in Iran."

A U.S. official who declined to be identified due to privacy concerns,

said the woman, identified by Iranian authorities as 34-year-old Hal

Fayalan, is in Istanbul, Turkey and that American consular officials

have been in touch with her.

Earlier Saturday, a senior Iranian police official said Iranian border

guards had detained the woman on Wednesday in the town of Jolfa along

Iran's border with Azerbaijan on suspicion of spying, the latest in a

string of conflicting reports about the case.

Gen. Ahmad Geravand told Iranian state radio that authorities arrested

the woman while she was filming border crossings and guard posts in

Jolfa, contradicting an earlier denial of her arrest on state TV.

The semi-official ISNA news agency quoted Geravand as saying she "was

on a mission for the Americans to film the country's borders."

Geravand also said the woman at one point claimed to be a Swiss

citizen.

His statement follows reports on Thursday from a state-owned Iranian

newspaper and the semiofficial Fars news agency that authorities had

detained an American woman carrying "spy equipment" along the Armenian

border, which is also near Iran's frontier with Azerbaijan. The

reports identified the woman as Hal Talaian.

But hours later, Iranian state TV denied the reports, and said no

American had been detained.

The State Department said Friday it had reached out to Swiss diplomats

who represent U.S. interests in Iran for information but had no

indication that an American woman had been arrested in Iran. . It said

a search of passport and other records could not find a match for the

name Hal Talaian or variations of it.

The alleged arrest would have been the fourth of an American that Iran

has detained and has accused of spying in less than two years.

You don't get it do you? This is what you said "Anyone know the identity and the background of this correspondent at Hetq?

Is he in fact an Armenian or is he using that sacred name of Hrant Dink to cover his real identity? Is he an undercover agent of ankaka?". You have every right to stress your point of view about any subject or topic just like any other person, why is it that when the other person's point of view differs from yours, then that person becomes the agent of Ankara or a non Armenian?

You are very rude and uncivil towards other members points of view. Your language is gutter language! Do you ever wonder why members avoid responding to your posts? You are an old bully in a little world. This might sound harsh but it needed to be said, I hope you get the message.

If no one reads my posts? How come you’re responding to a topic initiated by me?

And, what kind of "armenian" name is "Hall Talayan?

I have hit my head from one rock to the other to figure out how "hall" is an Armenian name.

"talayan"? is that another version of Perso-furkish "talan/talanian", meaning lootery/robbery? Or is it from the Arabic "

talaq" to mean release when they rpeat "aleyi talaq/release me" three times to divorce their spouses?

who knows, any name is possible nowadays... I haven't thought of the lastname so much - in regards to the firstname I really thought it's another version of the all popular American names such as - Hailee, Hailey, Hailie, Haleigh, Haley, Halie, Halle, Hallie. About the lastname, they shoulda put it "talat"ian - connect it with that all time favorite furkish piece of dead meat.
