Cases of swine flu increased in Armenia. Doctors give advice: do not

panic and do engage in preventive anti-influenza measures.

 

Meanwhile Armenia's Minister of Health, Harutyun Kushkyan, ordered

to examine pupils all around the state schools. Some schools provide

medical masks for children, and involve school doctors in inspections.

 

Moreover, some parents avoid using public transport to stay away from

crowds and send their kids to school by taxi.

 

Aysor's correspondent learnt that kindergartens do not still hold any

measures or daily examinations; some kindergartens initiated these

measures by themselves. Administration of one of the kindergartens

even used cunning: they prepared garlic necklaces for children and kids are happy to wear this.

 

Fortunately, garlic didn't still rise in price, while some drugs did

(10 tablets for 15 thousand dram, it is about $39).

Sometime ago when the furkish soldier did not know his left from his right, they would place an onion in one hand and a garlic in the other, the sergeant would call “սոխ -սխտոր/սողան- սամրսախ”.

How come nobody talks about the miraculously curative properties of onions, Allium Cepa, literrally “Onion head/Սոխ գլուխ“?

Սխտորը հինուց տարածուած էր կենդրոնական Ասիոյ մէջ, եւ Եգիպտացիներու կողմէառատորէն կը գործածուէր: Սխտորը սննդաղէննեէուն մէջ տեւական ներկայութիւն էր եւ կը տրուէր բուրգերու շինութեան աշխատաւորնէրուն, կանխելու որեէւէ հիւանդութեան տարածում: Ուսումնասիրութիւնները ցոյց տուած են որ սխտորը իր բուժիչ յատկութիւնը կը պարտի Alliin կոչուող ծծմբային նիւթին:

-Սխրորը ունի նաեւ տարբեր յատկութիւն մը, կարգիլէ արեան կարմիր գնդիկներու խտացումը որ պիտի կազմէրարեան շրջանը դժուարացնող ազդակ մը: Այս ազդեցութեան զօրութիւնը հաւասար է ԱՍԲԻՐԻՆ ին(Antigregant, anticoagulant):

 

-Սխտորին երրորդ յատկութիւննէ արեան ճնշումի(blood pressure) նուազումը: Լայնեցնելով արեան երակները, սխտորը կը բարելաւէ արեան հոսքը մասնաւորապէս ոտքերու երակները, փաստօրէն սխտոր գործածող անձը աւելի լաւ կը քալէ:

 

-Նորագոյն ուսուննասիրութիւնները ցոյց տուածեն են որ սխտորը կը նպաստէ բեղնաւորման պաշտոնին, բազմապատկելով արակա սերմի կազմը(sperm count):

 

-Չորցուած սխտորի փոշին աղիքներուն հանդէպ պւնի հականեխիչ յատկութիւն, կը վանէ որդերն ու սունկեը:ը(worms and fungi):

 

-Դեղարանին մէջ ծախուող սխտորի դեղահատները չունին անհաճոյ հոտը, եւ առաւել, Alliin ը չազդուիր կամ չի քանդուիր ստամոքսի թթուէն(gastric acid), այլ կը հասնիաղիքներուն պահելով իր ամբողջական ազդը:

But the problem with garlic is that it smells, and some people do not like it.

My grandmother knew the virtues of all plants : camphor, mauve, and other ones. When they were deported in Bolovadine,

in a village of Tatars, she saved the life of her children by treating the villagers, who gave her food.

Why do Italians don’t catch the flu?

Because no one will allow them to get close enough, as their basic cuisine is alia olio(garlic and oil) and pasta fazoul. **

My great aunt, born in Marash, married into Marseille once told us that during WW! The medics’ only weapon was garlic as they discovered that the only survivors of the day’s epidemics like typhus was those who ate garlic.

** Btw. The correct Italian phrase is “pasta fagioli/fazioli” like in “fasoulia”. Some of us know it as “lobi lubia”. And, I thought “lobby” was the anteroom of a hotel or state capitol where all propaganda/gaka is spread.

Home remedy: Garlic gets pricier as flu-scared Armenians resort to natural means of prophylactics



Experts say the locally grown garlic preserves all best qualities for flu prophylactics.

The threat of flu – swine and otherwise -- in Armenia has apparently led people to buy more garlic as an unconventional means of prevention, a situation that sellers have taken advantage of by quickly altering price tags.

 

Garlic is considered to have a certain preventive and even therapeutic effect when used before and during flu and common cold symptoms. Now it has proved to be a cash crop for some Armenian merchants.

 

The normal price of garlic has nearly doubled over last year’s prices as currently a kilo sells at about 1,800-2,000 drams (or up to $5). Sellers say that last year this time a normal garlic price was 800-1,000 drams (or $2-2.60).

 

The price of garlic imported from neighboring Iran, meanwhile, is 1,000-1,500 drams (or about $2.60-3.80). Specialists explain that unlike imported garlic, the locally grown product preserves all best qualities for flu prophylactics.

 

Doctors, too, usually recommend a regular use of garlic, which has a disinfecting effect, as a means to prevent flu and common cold during periods of outbreaks of the diseases. Also, it is believed that garlic has a multiplied remedying effect when used raw.

 

According to foreign media reports, many schools in Russia and China have been encouraging their students to wear so-called garlic necklaces and eat garlic with food that they offer at school canteens.

 

Despite the unpleasant smell, garlic neckwear is not an unusual practice at some Armenian homes either.

 

Gayane Meliksetyan, a seller at a retail market in the Mergelyan Institute area, says that the demand for garlic is high despite its unusually high price.

 

“Yesterday, for example, I had 20 kilos, it all sold out. Now I’ve bought it again to resell,” says Meliksetyan.

 

Gagik Manucharyan, of the Agriculture Ministry, tells ArmeniaNow that the penetration of swine flu into Armenia is one of the major contributing factors to the increase in the price of garlic.

 

“We all know that if something sells well at the market, sellers raise the price at once,” says Manucharyan, who heads the Ministry’s department for plant-growing, forest economy and plant protection.

Pungent Forecast: Wondering how to prepare for winter? Ask the onion.

Sacrificing tears for their efforts, villagers in Armenia say the coming winter will be a mild one, despite meteorologists’ predictions to the contrary.

Forget Doppler radars, global warming, and the rest. The crystal ball for weather forecast is in the Armenian onion.

For centuries, peasants have looked to the onion for clues on whether to brace for a freeze or to look forward to saving on firewood, pending what is found in the onion skin. According to folklore, if the onion skin is thick, chilly times are on the way. If thin, milder temperatures will prevail. This year, the autumn crop showed thin-skinned onions. Knarik Vardanyan, an onion-growing resident of Jrarat village, Kotayk province, says she does not need any weather forecast, just an onion. “When the onion skin was thick during recent years, we always had very cold winters, and if it was thin, just the opposite – very warm,” Vardanyan says. Peasants also forecast a warm winter due to a warm November, in which animals have enjoyed continuing to graze fresh foliage. Gagik Surenyan, Head of the Meteorology Department of ‘ArmStateHydromet’ under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Armenia, does not provide official information for the whole year (nor is it known whether he has held onion consultation). He only reports that December is going to be warm in general, and the first snowfalls are expected only in mid-December. “The temperature will rise by 2°C -3°C (35.6°F-37.4°F) after November 25, as a result of warm currents coming from Iran,” Surenyan told ArmeniaNow. Currently the average temperature in Yerevan is 14°C-16°C(57.2°F-60.8°F) in the afternoon, and -1°C - -2°C(33.8°F-35.6°F) – at night, as for provinces – 8°C - 16°C(46.4°F-60.8°F) in the afternoon, and 1°C - 5°C(33.8°F-41°F) at night.
