I was thinking about changing my last name to make it sound armenian. My mothers maiden name is panieeva but it was changed from panyan or during the period of the genocide. so i was thinking about changing it to Panyan . does this sound kind of childish? i dont know i would like to have an armenian last name but i just don't know. Since I was absolutely raised by my Armenian side, I thought about changing my last name at one time. I wish I had. To do so now for me would be professional suicide. It won't make you any more Armenian (I mean that in a good way), but I say go for it. How would your dad feel about that? From your last few posts, we sound very alike in that you feel sub-par because your surname is not Armenian, you don't speak the language and your blood is 50%. You'll quickly see around here that it's what's in your heart and mind that counts to everyone. Well, that all depends on how old you are, what your situation is life is like, your profession, your place of residence, etc etc. A decision that big shouldn't depend solely on whether or not having an Armenian last name would make you "more armenian" (after all, as Shakespeare's Juliet would have it, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet"). Personally, I think having an Armenian last name and being fully integrated into the fabric of this society are somewhat (let me stress "somewhat") contradictory in nature. An armenian last name makes you more ethnic. And professionally speaking, being more ethnic equals being less successful (to me, at least, and I know it's a rather controversial statement). In the end, what will make you Armenian will not be your last name; it'll be who you are inside. Once again, welcome. Keep in mind that names like John Smith, Herman Shmidt and Poruchik Rjevsky are also ethnic names. On the other hand names like Osman, Hasan and Mehmet are deemed too Western.In some very conservative circles names like King Arthur and Napoleon Bonaparte might cause distress. My dad however might not support my decision. He wants to continue the Kornev name going, but i really want to have an armenian surname. Im gonna tell my mom about it. She might argue to it.But i think is ultimately my decision. I am about 70% armenian and i fully see myself as armenian, the only thing that im missing is the language , too bad i was taught just russian from my birth but anyway i think that my name should be like something with a yan or ian ending . is it okay to make one up or use one out there like Sarkissian?I wanted to thank everyone for the warm welcome!! My mom looked into changing our names, but they said she could not change mine without my dad's permission. This would have been 30+ years ago and I'm sure the laws are different now. He said me too, and the sond question he asked was but where is Armenia situated?? :: )))))) This party is crap... you see 100 Armenians only 3-4 of them can speak Armenian, but they speak English because there are nobody who knows Armenian. My friend from Armenia (Gavar), he also studies here, told me before we went there: Maximum you'll be there is 15 minutes... and that was true... : ))))) Bunch of English people... Guest Posted November 7, 2000 Report Share Posted November 7, 2000 cool last name gayane i asked my mom about it yesterday and she was like well you have to be 18 and it costs 170 dollars but i dont care the cosdt is of no importance i am proud to be armenian and having a ian/yan last name will just help me (i think) i don't know yet what it would be hmmm confused maybe koryan or korian (combine kornev with yan )that should make my pops happy!!
