Where we said that the word is of Arabic origin, and how “admiral” was derived from “amir-al/commander of”. During the Arab conquest it meant “commander/governor” , since the governors were commanders of the military, and perhaps “prince” by inference.

Amir/Emir/commader/princeامیر and his domain Amira/admiralty / gubernia امیره. In the Armenian the word was synonymous with (the domain of) “amirayutiun/ամիրա- ու- թիւն”

Also note that in the Arabic, just as in many other languages the “ä” ending denotes feminine, Amira is used as a girls’ name to mean “lady commander/princess” not unlike the Armenian “ouhi” or the “eh” as in Arsen/Arsineh, Karen /Karineh.

In the ottoman culture the “amira” word took a specific meaning, mainly to mean “prince”. It was a form of “knighthood” , bestowed on “loyal servants” of the sultanate.

We also spoke about how the honorific title “ämira” in time became a personal name.

From Arabian amir ''master'', ''orderer''** and Persian xhan.In Armenia this name was in use in the Middle Ages (XII century), now it is not met. We also have the surname Amirkhanyan.

**”Who translates these? orderer=commander, հրամայող/ հրամանատար?”Orderer as in the hamburger flipper at McDonalds"?

At one time, during the 18th and 19th c. there were an upward of 100 Armenian dynasties with the title of “amira”. They were mostly “loyal servants” of the ottoman empire, be it military, diplomatic … but most were of the cultural, denominational, industrial, financial and structural/architectural professions.

Often, these “amira-s” were the diplomatic go-between of the sultanate and the Armenian Patriarchate, while many were financiers augmenting the ottoman treasury. Many were “loan sharks/userers” , many of tem would prey on their own kind at the Churchyard (See Zohrab's ԺԱՄԻՆ ԲԱԿԸ), as their fangs were not sharp enough to pierce the tick skin of the furk, (the Arm. Encycl calls them, (naturally), “anti-socialist/capitalist” “vashkharou”**, “money changers” that today we call “bankers”.

The most prominent were the Tatians, the Touzjians, the Balians, the Bezjians, the Jezayirians, the Khorasanjians, the Mirijanians, and the Yrramians.

The best known of them is Harutiun Amira Bezjian (there is an extended biography of him, we may get back ), who has many institutions, schools etc. named for him.

The Soviet Armenian historiography calls these Amiras "feudal lords" and “vashkharou” i.e Loan Sharks.

Remember that many of these “ amiras” were highly moral, patriotically Armenian benefactors, yet it seems some of them were shameless rogues and usurers.
