Families stunned by crash

Glendale residents lose loved ones in what is considered Iran’s worst plane crash in six years.

If you need help getting information about the crash of Caspian Airlines Flight 7908, call the Armenian Council of America on (818) 502-6580.

GLENDALE — Local families Wednesday were left grappling with the news that loved ones were among the 168 people killed earlier in the day on an Armenia-bound airplane that crashed in Iran.

The flight was bound for the Armenian capital, Yerevan, but crashed into an Iranian field about 20 minutes after leaving Tehran. All 153 passengers and 15 crew members on Caspian Airlines Flight 7908 were killed in the fiery noontime crash, which left a gapping hole in the farm field amid scattered pieces of the Russian-made jet.

The disaster was described by news reports as the worst airplane crash in Iran in six years.

Burbank resident Talin Davidian’s father, Levon Davidian, was one of the passengers killed in the crash. Levon Davidian was a well-known Iranian Armenian psychologist.

“We’re shocked, and we don’t believe it,” she said.

A self-described “control freak” when it came to her father’s travels, Talin Davidian said she always talked her father by phone before and after a flight.

But the phone never rang.

Her father had planned to fly out today, but took an earlier flight to surprise her mother in Armenia, she said.

Talin Davidian called her brother in Iran about 4:30 a.m. when she couldn’t get through to her father’s cell phone. He confirmed that her father had been killed in the crash.

“It’s unbelievable,” she said.

She has flown Caspian Airlines in the past from Iran to Armenia and never had any difficulties, “but they obviously had problems.”

“They were not Lufthansa, but they were OK,” she said, referring to the higher-priced German airline.

Hamaspour Polady, whose family lives in Glendale, was also confirmed as a passenger of Flight 7908 by a family friend who answered the phone at her family’s residence Wednesday.

Family members of Polady — whose name was spelled differently according to several passenger lists that were released and translated from Persian — were in shock and trying to get more details about the crash, said the friend, who did not want to be identified.

An Armenian Relief Society employee had a cousin on the flight who was going to meet his wife on vacation in Armenia, an agency representative said.

Since the nonprofit opened its doors Wednesday morning, concerned family members who wanted more details about the crash had been dropping in.

The Armenian Relief Society was one of several groups Wednesday that obtained a list of Armenian passengers, translated from Persian, who reportedly died in the crash, although the thoroughness of the lists could not be confirmed.

At least two other passengers had family members who live in Glendale, said Vasken Khodanian, chairman of Armenian Council of America.

“We are trying to contact them,” he said.

Local churches will be holding services Sunday to remember those who died in the crash, Khodanian said.

“Basically they rely on the church, in this case, to give them comfort,” he said.

Canadians among dead in crash

Family friend says a 35-year-old Toronto woman and her three-year-old son were headed to Armenia to visit relatives when accident occurred after takeoff from Tehran

Tehran — Canadian Press

Last updated on Thursday, Jul. 16, 2009 10:57AM EDT

A close family friend says a Toronto woman and her three-year-old son are among those killed in a plane crash near Tehran.

Leonard Rideout says 35-year-old Nana Antashyam was flying to Armenia with her son, Edward Khachik, to make arrangements for her sister's birthday party. He says Ms. Antashyam's husband and brother-in-law dropped the mother and son off at the airport Wednesday only to hear news of the plane crash on the radio as they were driving home.

Mr. Rideout says the family had left for Tehran in early July to baptize their son and adds Ms. Antashyam's husband, Vahik Khachik, is shattered by the news.

Ms. Antashyam was a classical pianist and piano teacher with the Ontario Conservatory of Music.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Daniel Barbarie says consular officials in Tehran are in contact with the family and assistance is being provided.

Mr. Rideout says Ms. Antashyam was a nice woman who was a good wife and mother, and Edward was a playful kid who was very smart.

The cause of the crash is not yet known. Investigators have recovered two of the three black boxes belonging to the jetliner, which was bound for Yerevan, Armenia. The chief investigator, Ahmad Majidi, has said the cockpit voice and flight data recorders would likely be sent to the aircraft's Russian manufacturers for analysis.

Most of the passengers were Iranians, many of them from Iran's large ethnic Armenian community, as well as 11 members of Iran's national youth judo team.

Five Armenian citizens were among the dead and Armenia today announced a one-day national state of mourning to mark the death of its citizens in the crash, according to the Russian news agency ITAR-Tass.

The Tu-154M jet had taken off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport and crashed about 16 minutes after takeoff, near the city of Qazvin, around 120 kilometres northwest of Tehran.

On that day I wrote to my daughter about the sad news. She responded saying that they had already seen the news and added that the day before my khnami’s Yerevan born daughter- in- law had flown to Yerevan with her twin daughters, they spend the summer vacation in Yerevan with her parents, and of course, she added that “they were not flying via Tehran (obviously)”.

Iranian airliner skids off runway killing 16

By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer Ali Akbar Dareini, Associated Press Writer – 35 mins ago TEHRAN, Iran – An Iranian passenger plane skidded off the runway during its landing in northeast Iran and crashed, shredding the cockpit into a tangled mass of wreckage and killing 16 people, the state news agency said.

Footage from Iran's Press TV showed the plane sitting at an angle, its tail awkwardly on the ground and the mangled front end pointing upward. The rest of the craft appeared largely intact.

The IRNA news agency reported that the tires failed on landing and it skidded into a wall, though no wall was visible in the footage.

The Russian-made Ilyushin-62 plane from the privately owned Aria Airlines was carrying 153 passengers and flew from the capital Tehran to the northeastern city of Mashhad, 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) away.

Local official Ghahrman Rashid told the state news agency that another 21 people were injured in the crash and that all survivors had been evacuated from the scene. He had originally given a slightly higher death toll and a lower figure for the injured. No reason was given for the change.

The manager of Aria Airlines was killed in the crash, the state news agency reported.

On July 15, an Iranian passenger plane crashed soon after take off, killing 168 people aboard.

It was the latest in a string of deadly crashes in recent years that have highlighted Iran's difficulties in maintaining its aging fleet of planes.

Iranian airlines, including state-run ones, are chronically strapped for cash, and maintenance has suffered, experts say.

U.S. sanctions prevent Iran from updating its 30-year-old American aircraft and make it difficult to get European spare parts or planes as well. The country has come to rely on Russian aircraft, many of them Soviet-era planes that are harder to get parts for since the Soviet Union's fall.

Iran's worst crash came in February 2003 and also involved a Russian-made Ilyushin that plowed into the mountains of southeastern Iran, killing 302 aboard — mostly members of the elite Revolutionary Guard.

Some of the jets in Iran's fleet are U.S.-made craft bought before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which led to a cut-off in ties between the nations. U.S. sanctions since prevent Iran from buying parts for those planes or new ones.

In December 2005, 115 people were killed when a pre-1979 U.S.-made C-130 plane, crashed into a 10-story building near Tehran's Mehrabad airport.

The sanctions also bar sales of European jets with a certain amount of U.S. parts, limiting Iran's ability to buy from Europe.

As a result, Iran has focused on Russian-built planes — like the Tupolev and Ilyushins, the Soviet-era workhorses for Russian civil air fleets. After the Soviet collapse, government funding sharply declined for manufacturers of aircraft and spare parts, and other countries using the planes have had a harder time getting parts.
