HAPPY NEW YEAR

While the rest of the world says "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year", we say "Shrohavor Nor Tari yev Sourb Tsnound". Chronologically, they place Christmas ahead of the New Year, we place Nor Tari ahead of Tsnound.

When we were very young, this time of the year we would play this musical game. A duet that went something like…;-

Nor Tari-

Eh hin tari, du tser papuk,

Der inch k’anes aystegh nstuk,

On! Ver kanknir, ber@d bardzir,

Yev aysteghen shut heratsir

Hin Tari-

Ayo, ayo petq e yertam,

Ays ashkharhen shut heranam…

---

(I can’t remember the rest)

Should we forget the past? Look what Robert Burns says…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rId95N2teUc...feature=related

Very few know the entire poem except te first stanza nd the refrain;

Auld Lang Syne - a poem by Robert Burns

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp,

And surely I'll be mine!

And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,

And pu'd the gowans fine;

But we've wandered mony a weary fit

Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidled i' the burn,

Frae morning sun till dine;

But seas between us braid hae roared

Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere,

And gie's a hand o' thine!

And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught

For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

Why do Africans call this season Kwanza? Of course, their spring fruit season arrives much earlier than our Nawruz/Nor Or/Նոր ՕրNew Day./

The Creation of KWANZAA (Kwahn-zah)

Celebrated December 26 to January 1st of every year

-----

KWANZAA is derived from the Swahili word, KWANZA which means first fruits and is part of the phrase Matunda Ya. Dr Karenga added the extra "a" to distinguish the Afro-American from the African.

---

----

KWANZAA "as a holiday of the first fruits" comes directly out of the traditoin of agricultural people of Africa, who celebrated and gave thanks for harvest at designated times during the year.

First Fruit?

You mean this?

Maralin boy@ chinar e,

Acher@ nush u khumar e.

Of course, we know that Nubar/Noubar means “new fruit”. See my post about Komitas‘ (Tsirani Tsar... “bar mi tar, vay“!)

Here is what threw me into a loop.

Are you telling me that Nubar is a girl??

In eastern Armenia Nubar is a girls’ name??

That will be a tremendous relief for me as I thought all this time I was singing that song as an ode to Apollo. Don’t get me wrong. Even though I don’t hate boys, my choice of gender for adoration, adulation and admiration have always been girls.

NUBAR

From Persian navbar (nubar) "new fruit". In Western Arm it is considered a male name, in Eastern - a female name. The corresponding surname is Nubaryan.

Nubar Nubar

Nubari boy@ chinar e,
