To a Jilted Lover

by Sylvia Plath

Cold on my narrow cot I lie

and in sorrow look

through my window-square of black:

figured in the midnight sky,

a mosaic of stars

diagrams the falling years,

while from the moon, my lover's eye

chills me to death

with radiance of his frozen faith.

Once I wounded him with so

small a thorn

I never thought his flesh would burn

or that the heat within would grow

until he stood

incandescent as a god;

now there is nowhere I can go

to hide from him:

moon and sun reflect his flame.

In the morning all shall be

the same again:

stars pale before the angry dawn;

the gilded cock will turn for me

the rack of time

until the peak of noon has come

and by that glare, my love will see

how I am still

blazing in my golden hell.

Lying in me

by Anna Akhmatova

Lying in me, as though it were a white

Stone in the depths of a well, is one

Memory that I cannot, will not, fight:

It is happiness, and it is pain.

Anyone looking straight into my eyes

Could not help seeing it, and could not fail

To become thoughtful, more sad and quiet

Than if he were listening to some tragic tale.

I know the gods changed people into things,

Leaving their consciousness alive and free.

To keep alive the wonder of suffering,

You have been metamorphosed into me.

There Is An Utter Mark

by A. Akhmatova

There is an utter mark in the people's nearness,

Which can't be crossed by love and passion,--

But in the striking silence lips become one

And the heart is torn apart by love.

And here friendship is helpless,

And the mountain of high and flaming happiness,

When the soul is free and estranged

From the slow calm of sweet passion.

In striving for it they become insane,

And those attaining it are annihilated by grief...

And now you understand why

My heart doesn't beat under your hand.

The Last Toast

by A. Akhmatova

I drink to the ruined house,

To the evil of my life,

To our shared loneliness

And I drink to you--

To the lie of lips that betrayed me,

To the deadly coldness of the eyes,

To the fact that the world is cruel and depraved,

To the fact that God did not save.

Sorting Laundry

Folding clothes,

I think of folding you

into my life.

Our king-sized sheets

like table cloths

for the banquets of giants,

pillow cases, despite so many

washings seams still

holding our dreams.

Towels patterned orange and green,

flowered pink and lavender,

gaudy, bought on sale,

reserved, we said, for the beach,

refusing, even after years,

to bleach into respectability.

So many shirts and skirts and pants

recycling week after week, head over heels

recapitulating themselves.

All those wrinkles

to be smoothed, or else

ignored, they're in style.

Myriad uncoupled socks

which went paired into the foam

like those creatures in the ark.

And what's shrunk

is tough to discard

even for Goodwill.

In pockets, surprises:

forgotten matches,

lost screws clinking on enamel;

paper clips, whatever they held

between shiny jaws, now

dissolved or clogging the drain;

well-washed dollars, legal tender

for all debts public and private,

intact despite agitation;

and, gleaming in the maelstrom,

one bright dime,

broken necklace of good gold

you brought from Kuwait,

the strangely tailored shirt

left by a former lover...

If you were to leave me,

if I were to fold

only my own clothes,

the convexes and concaves

of my blouses, panties, stockings, bras

turned upon themselves,

a mountain of unsorted wash

could not fill

the empty side of the bed.

Found this one while reading. I need a long long long nap.

I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naive or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman.

I think this is one of the most romantic poems ever written. It reads so vulnerably; so full of hope and at once helplessness.

How talented can one have been to put into words such feelings and create such pictures in my mind?!?!?! Ehh Sevak, Sevak. :)

So is color! Such nonsense are both! And yet both have been necessary and important enough to withstand evolution throughout the ages. :) We have been programmed to fool ourselves in order to be able to survive. (Bio Psych)

And you would have the MAN of the household be sole owner of all stocks and hold the portfloio in his hands. And the contract would be written under his own terms! That is why most marriages do not last beyond th 8th quarter!

Lol. We should enrol all would be newlyweds in Business Law and Econ courses. That will save them all.

While we are at it, can we enroll the girls in Sex Ed and the Boys in Home Ec?

Self proclaimed one? Doesn't fly!

Essentially, this is irrelevant. Love is a choice and nothing more. People grow unto one another, the rest is just tacked on.

And you would have the MAN of the household be sole owner of all stocks and hold the portfloio in his hands. And the contract would be written under his own terms! That is why most marriages do not last beyond th 8th quarter!

A man should be at the helm of the household. If you don't like that go marry a gay guy. That does not mean a man should be the sole arbiter or decision maker, but his word should carry weight. The reason marriages don't last beyond the 8th quarter is because of silly women who think we are all equal and want to be all independent and cute. The contract should be mutual, or else why bother entering into such a transaction? A prenuptial agreement by the parties involved is a must, otherwise you accept the State's prenuptial agreement.

Lol. We should enrol all would be newlyweds in Business Law and Econ courses. That will save them all. huh.gif

While we are at it, can we enroll the girls in Sex Ed and the Boys in Home Ec?

Another reason marriages fail is because the sex is horrible but this is not a valid reason to divorce when children are in the mix.

Self proclaimed one? Doesn't fly!

I am a genius, objectively manifested and time tested and peer reviewed.

Let it be so, I profess to be the dellusional being I am, lest I live in your colorless reality.

It's your delusion not mine.

Wait for Me

By Konstantin Simonov

Wait for me, and I'll come back!

Wait with all you've got!

Wait, when dreary yellow rains

Tell you, you should not.

Wait when snow is falling fast,

Wait when summer's hot,

Wait when yesterdays are past,

Others are forgot.

Wait, when from that far-off place,

Letters don't arrive.

Wait, when those with whom you wait

Doubt if I'm alive.

Wait for me, and I'll come back!

Wait in patience yet

When they tell you off by heart

That you should forget.

Even when my dearest ones

Say that I am lost,

Even when my friends give up,

Sit and count the cost,

Drink a glass of bitter wine

To the fallen friend -

Wait! And do not drink with them!

Wait until the end!

Wait for me and I'll come back,

Dodging every fate!

"What a bit of luck!" they'll say,

Those that would not wait.

They will never understand

How amidst the strife,

By your waiting for me, dear,

You had saved my life.

Only you and I will know

How you got me through.

Simply - you knew how to wait -

No one else but you.

Somewhere there's someone who dreams of your smile,

and finds in your presence that life is worth while.

So when you are lonely, remember it's true

Somebody somewhere is thinking of you.
