Parmenides
Levon Ter-Petrossian was one of the reasons why our family left Armenia. He was a weak president and didn't accomplish much. Under his watch half of the nation emigrated abroad. LTP is being touted as the pro-Western politician who can accomplish things - give me a break! West doesn't care about Armenia. Whichever nation in the region aligned themselves with US suffered as a result. Estonia, Ukraine, Georgia, et al. Serzh is known to be pro-Kremlin, which is exactly where Armenia needs to be. Russians are far more reliable friends than Americans. I wouldn't vote LTP for a dog catcher. He needs to retire and "fix his past mistakes" in private memoirs, not experiment with a volatile nation that's surrounded by enemies. This whole situation is shameful. Does anyone know if this is true? Only pro-LTP programs are talking about this, thus my distrust. If you have accurate information from Armenia about this, please let us know. Thank you. That's a big lie! I spoke to three different people last night in Yerevan and they all said that more than 9 people were killed and 9 young soldiers were murdered by the crowd (shooting, etc), on top of the civilian deaths...I guess the total number of murdered people is still unknown, although they might be covering up, but number of soldiers were murdered by the same crowd. I even spoke to my close friend, whose brother works in that field and she told me that the crowd outnumbered the army significantly and many many soldiers are in the hospital because of serious wounds. All three people in Yerevan said that the whole city is outraged at those "hooligans" for all the looting, vanadalizm and property destruction they they have caused. Let's not forget that it's not the police burning their own cars! Like I said before, inchkam Levona xujan etkam et poxotsi durs ekats mardik ira koxmnakits. If I was a president of any state, I wouldn't hesitate to prosecute such behavior against the state and other peaceful civilians. They claimed that a 12 year old boy was murdered, but now they're saying that he only lost consciousness in the crowd. It's also frustrating that the Western media is presenting the whole situation as "Armenian government using force agains its innocent civilians in the streets" Full load of crap, especially when the same exact thing Levon was doing during his rule. I guess all that was acceptable and democratic in 1990s, but not anymore. Edited March 3, 2008 by elle

elle
It's amazing to witnesss everybody believing that their sources from back home are providing the "Gospel truth". They have more truth to them than the news in US. Just by looking at the psychopathic LA rally from February 24 and from yesterday and the constant bashing of the Armenian government from the western media, I think I should stick to my sources in Armenia. If someone stands on the podium and claims that 1990s never saw any electricity shortages and that it's all a lie, you're damn right i will stick to my sources in getting information about the events that unfold in Armenia. AVO
Anushik jan its a lie. No 12 year old was killed neither were any pregnant woman beaten 13 year old boy was treated for a broken leg. He was running and was hit by a car (Opel). Accident happened in the Norqi 2rd Masiv (far from the center) around 7pm. Driver was stopped, and the degree of his guilt is being investigated. According to the eyewitnesses, boy run into the street. 4. No pregnant patients were treated for trauma. Not because Armenian doctors are heartless, but because no pregnant patients were submitted. And looks like they weren't submitted because either levonakan's hid them to show them later, or they weren't any beaten pregnant women. 5. Below are seven reasons for why any person interested in establishing democracy in Armenia must support anyone but Ter-Petrosyan. 1. Ter-Petrosyan was the first person in the Republic of Armenia to practice large scale electoral fraud (elections of 1996, Vazgen Manukian being the real winner). 2. Ter-Petrosyan was the first person in the Republic of Armenia to use army against the protesters (after falsifying the results of presidential elections in 1996). 3. Ter-Petrosyan was the first person in the Republic of Armenia to suppress free speech, by shutting down newspapers (I remember quite well policemen throwing computers out of the office windows of “Yerkir” daily). 4. Ter-Petrosyan was the first person in the Republic of Armenia to shut down a political party and throw its members into jail (yes, the infamous “Dro” case). 5. Ter-Petrosyan was the very person under whose wing the oligarchic families were born. Actually all the current oligarchs became rich during Ter-Petrosyan’s rule. Moreover, while his supporters criticize oligarchs, the major donor for the Ter-Petrosyan’s campaign is another oligarch. 6. Ter-Petrosyan was the person who brought to power Serge Sargsyan and Robert Kocharyan — who are now being called criminals and bandits by the supporters of the ex-president. 7. Harut
ArmeniaNow’s position on the Media Blackout President Robert Kocharyan extended his good wishes in official visit to wounded Sunday. ArmeniaNow believes that in any true democracy – even, and especially, during time of crisis – access to information is a fundamental public right. It is on that basis and others that we declare our strong objection to the Armenian Government’s inclusion of media prohibitions as part of its enforcement of Article 15 and Article 117 of the Constitution pertaining to a State of Emergency. We fully support all legitimate efforts to stabilize conditions following the tragic events of March 1. But we do not accept that silencing non-state media is a legitimate means of maintaining order. Rather, we fear that the restrictions, even for the short period announced, could lead to the sort of propagandized media that re-unites Armenia with its Soviet past, while doing nothing to resolve the problems it faces in the present. While obliged to comply with this imposition of censorship, ArmeniaNow will post state-approved information pertinent to the interests of our readers. But we do so with a caution to our readers that these releases present only a partial picture of present conditions. We apologize to our readers for this disruption of news. We ask, though, that you continue to check this site, as we will resume normal reporting as soon as the State of Emergency is lifted. Aratta-Kingdom
http://www.reuters.com/news/pictures/artic...e=worldNews#a=1 http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/i...lBrandChannel=0 No sign of negotiations in Armenia standoff: OSCE By James Kilner YEREVAN (Reuters) - Armenia's main opposition group and the government are unlikely to start negotiations soon to end a standoff which triggered rioting that killed eight people, a European envoy said on Monday after he met both parties. Soldiers patrolled Yerevan's streets after President Robert Kocharyan imposed emergency laws on Saturday following clashes between police and protesters -- the worst civil violence in Armenia since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The protesters accuse Kocharyan's ally and Prime Minister Serzh Sarksyan of rigging a presidential election last month. Opposition leader and former President Levon Ter-Petrosyan blamed police brutality for the violence. "In all likeliness this kind of dialogue between Ter-Petrosyan and the government at the moment is not possible," Heikki Talvitie, a special envoy for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), told reporters after being asked if the two sides would start negotiations. "But let's not exclude it from the future," he added. Armenia is a country of around 3.2 million people on the edge of the Caucasus -- an oil transit route to Europe from the Caspian Sea where the United States and Russia have been vying for influence. Talvitie flew into Yerevan on Sunday night and met Kocharyan and Sarksyan for talks that resumed on Monday before meeting the opposition groups. Neither side has shown much willingness to back down and analysts and diplomats said Armenia was heading for a period of uncertainty. ------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.euronews.net/index.php?page=inf...73168&lng=1 Armenia opposition leader vows protests not over An uneasy calm has returned to the Armenian capital Yerevan after violent clashes between opposition supporters and riot police. Troops are patrolling the streets to enforce a state of emergency, which will remain until March 20. Thousands of people have held daily demonstrations since a disputed presidential election on February 19. One eyewitness said: "There were masses of people. They were all dispersed. They gathered in a different place but were dispersed again. They have isolated the leader who could organise these people and prevent these actions." "The situation is horrible," said one resident. "I could not ever imagine that here in Yerevan such things could happen. I don't know how to describe it, everyone just went crazy." Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Armenia's first president after independence from the Soviet Union and the defeated presidential candidate, has vowed that protests will continue. He said the election, which was won by Prime Minister Serge Sarkisyan, was rigged. International observers judged it to be generally fair but noted some problems with the vote count. Seven protesters and one police officer were killed in the fighting on Saturday and more than 100 people were injured. Two opposition politicians have been arrested, accused of trying to seize power. Aratta-Kingdom
ARMENIAN ARMY BRINGS ORDER AFTER RIOTS Russia Today March 2 2008 Russia Troops and armored vehicles are now patrolling the main streets of Armenia's capital, Yerevan, following violent riots which claimed eight lives. More than 100 people were injured. A 20-day state of emergency has now been imposed. Earlier in the day General Colonel Seyran Oganyan, a Chief of staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, addressed the nation with a call to observe the state of emergency. "I discourage everybody from trying to bypass the restrictions imposed by the state of emergency. Please be disciplined and comply with the steps the army is taking to implement the state of emergency. Particularly I would like to ask people to refrain from gathering in Yerevan even in small groups. When even the slightest suspicion the army will take action against such groups as prescribed by the law and the constitution. The army will make sure the state of emergency rules are observed," proclaimed Seyran Oganyan. The army is out in force throughout the center of Yerevan, there is really a reign of steel around the main square where the violence took place. There are thousands of men in uniform accompanied by IFVs. Evidence of the destruction and carnage is clearly visible: there are burnt down cars across the roads through all the centre of Armenian capital. The overall atmosphere is extremely nervous. All media have been closed and it's very difficult to get any information.
Aratta-Kingdom
Third Party Voice: Reactions to being called "scum"By Vahan Ishkhanyan ArmeniaNow reporter "“I don’t think any person with dignity can be found in Armenia to go against the people and not stand by our side. It’s painful there is a lot of scum, but, be confident, the more powerful our movement becomes, the less becomes the scum..” This is from Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s February 23rd speech. I read these lines and my heart pounded. I don’t stand by Levon’s side, me, my wife, my children, my relatives, we are all scum. My friend says his daughter takes part in the boycott of student strike. I ask does she support Levon, he says, no, what are you talking about, but if she goes to the classes they will call her a traitor. On February 9th when the campaign was underway I was passing Tumanyan Street and heard Levon’s speech: “This rally and the march showed the boundary is clearly drawn – on the one side is the free, brave, hero citizen who has dignity, on the other side – is the scum of the nation.” ...And: “When they frankly curse Charles Aznavour, when they believe in bold lies, when they ascribe without an analysis the dark and cold days to the war alone like LTP does, when a seemingly normal guy calls Vazgen Manukyan a scoundrel, when you hear [the words] Levon is our God and when the choice is set between Levon as God and Serzh as Satan, how can one keep from thinking this way [meaning that people have turned into zombies].” “It’s hard to fight against them, it’s very hard, and they can give such sticky labels, like saying that anyone who opposes Levon is from Serzh’s headquarters.”
Aratta-Kingdom
LEVON TER-PETROSYAN FREE The rumors are spread that Levon Ter-Petrosyan is under house arrest. In fact the reality is quite different. According to Vardan Oskanyan, the Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Armenia (RA), Levon Ter-Petrosyan is not under house arrest. Taking into account the security responsibilities, Ter-Petrosyan was taken to his house. What is done is under his interests, said the minister. Vardan Oskanyan notified that according to state security law, people who need state protection, whose life is under threat, and then the servicemen of the security service should take care of his/her life taking to a safer place. “Of course, Ter-Petrosyan expressed some resistance, but he was taken to his house, and he is allowed to leave it whenever he wants,” said the minister and added that in these conditions it is impossible to take care for his security. The minister continued saying that the servicemen do not have rights to follow him wherever he goes. “He could sign a document which would prove that he refused to be taken care of, and that the responsibility for his safeness is totally on his shoulders,” he said. AK-47
Dashnaks Defend Emergency Rule The Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) on Monday defended the imposition of a state of emergency in Yerevan, saying that the post-election protests staged by former President Levon Ter-Petrosian were an attempt at coup d’etat. “We emphasize that the actions taken by the first president and his supporters were an attempt to come power by violent means and that the Armenian president’s decision to declare a state of emergency was a necessity,” the leadership of the nationalist party represented in the government said in a statement. The statement said Saturday’s deadly clashes between security forces and thousands of opposition supporters were part of Ter-Petrosian’s “scenario consistently prepared in the last several months.” It demanded that the authorities identify and strictly punish organizers of the riots. Dashnaktsutyun also faulted Armenia’s leadership for failing to address “objective reasons” for public discontent with the state of affairs in the country which it said was the reason why Ter-Petrosian has attracted a large following since his political comeback in September. It said the authorities should strengthen the rule of law and tackle the public “sense of injustice” in earnest. Dashnaktsutyun contested the February 19 with its own candidate, Vahan Hovannisian, who won 6.1 percent of the vote, according to the Central Election Commission. While alleging widespread fraud, the party recognized Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian’s victory in the vote and is understood to be ready to join a new coalition government which he plans to form in the coming weeks.
