Nooo! The song is actually; Լուսնակ գիշեր բոլորովին…

 

So, what does khthoum/խթում mean?

To be exact the word is actually used not so much for the night/day before Christmas but more so for the Saturday before Easter. I could not find the word in itself when suddenly I realized that it may be based on the root word of kith/խիթ. Sure enough, “khith” is relatively well known, to mean (sharp) pain for one, to gaud, to rib, to pierce (there may be a clue here), etc. Another meaning of the word, and this was a total surprise to me, is to “eat”, it almost reminds us the English idiom of “stuffing one’s face”. Also consider another word based on the same root.. khothel/խոթել, to insert, stab which brings us yet to another use , to sting/խայթել /կծծել.

 

I will stop here and see if we can deduct what the real meaning of khthoum,

Today April 23, 2011 is ԽԹՈՒՄ /KHTHOUM /Dark Saturday.

 

Who else, beside me knows the real meaning of the word?

Who cares?

In the Armenian there are several euphemistic words for ԽԹՈՒՄ, Նաւակատիք and Ճրագալոյծ. The former is based on the “nava’/nova/new/նոր” there is no opinion about the second part of the word “կատիք/katik”. As to ՃՐԱԿԱԼՈՅԾ , it is obvious that it means “opening of the light”, when on Friday the light is extinguished ԽԱՒԱՐՈՒՄ/դռնբակ/shutting the door, darkening, to once again to be opened on Easter day ԴՌՆԲԱՑ/opening of the door.

Why is it named so? To mean that on Friday the church DOORS were shut to only open on Sunday?

Translation.

On the day before Easter, the women observed a lenten diet. They did laundry, then proceeded to the public bath. In the evening they went to a church mass and partook in Communion.

 

Below I don’t see the etymology of Խիթ/Khith, sharp pain. All of the ensuing words derive from խէթ/kheth խայթ/khayth- sting/piercing/stabbing pain. Remember that above we spoke about the “piercing of the side of Jesus. Not to forget that some our correspondents have caused a pain in my ****

Note above that the word is also erroneusly spelled as "խայտ" which in fact is a total contradiction as the latter means "glee/ happiness"

My initial thought was it is ճրագալոյծ and meant to dissolve, to extinguish, but it turns out just the opposite.
