Azat
“Caravan,” which will take place during the spring of 2002, is an art show unlike any other. Fourteen immense paintings derived from ancient Armenian manuscript illuminations will tour throughout the state of California, riding on the back of seven 24-foot flatbed trucks. Zadik Zadikian will create twelve of the paintings, and Charles Garabedian will create the other two. Each truck will carry two paintings, one on each side. Original mural-size artworks will be put into the public spotlight in this unusual manner, given their first exhibition on the freeways and byways of America’s most populous state. Created mostly between the 9th and 14th centuries, Armenian miniatures are cultural treasures known to few. Not only beautiful in a purely artistic sense, they embody the whole inner emotional state of the culture that produced them. They are distinguished by their simplicity and exquisite stylization, realized with an economy of line and color. Armenia’s enemies and conquerors tried to destroy and steal these sacred documents. They would even ransom them, selling them back to Armenians who would pay anything and everything to gain back their cultural patrimony. These artworks have survived, and yet very few people, art historians or otherwise, know about them. Even many Armenians know them more by legend than by sight. “Caravan” will bring Armenian illumination back to the world’s attention. A full camera crew will document the entire project, including the making of the paintings, the actual drive through the freeways, and people’s reactions. The filming will be edited into a 26-minute-long documentary to be aired on various public television stations. Local radio stations will also talk with the public during the seven-truck journey. Armenia’s cultural identity, a hidden cache of images for centuries, is being taken on the road. Come celebrate. http://www.caravanproject.com/
