Tracking Roots

In the past 6 months I found out that I am also part Armenian/Georgian. I have been doing genealogical research for the past 6 years but right now I am having a problem finding out information on my "new" roots. Where could I go to get information on the family names-they are not obscure but rather well known in Armenia/Georgia. They are Kara-Murza and Tumanov(Tumanishvili). Even though I have contacted some groups in Georgia who are involved in cultural research I was told there are no places where I could get any historical information. I find that hard to believe. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you for your help. I will visit the sites you suggested. However, I understand that a lot information may not be available. That was the same story in my family. Documents, correspondence, deeds etc. were all destroyed due to fear of persecution and death. Unfortunately none of these measures helped. Most were exiled or executed. Now it is left to my generation to start putting together the little information that exists and to try to make a picture. It will be a difficult task.

I have one question regarding names. The name Tumanov is the Russified form. However, what is the difference between Tumanishvili and Tumanian? Is this the same name or are these two seperate surnames? Since I am new to this and I am not that familiar with the difference between Georgian and Armenian names I am a bit confused.

Armenians and Greeks, etc. have often adopted the suffixes common to surnames in a the country they inhabit. A name like Tumanian is an Armenian name but a family may become known by an altered version. Whether you perceive the family name to still be the original Armenian one or the modified version is up to you. -ishvili is Georgian... -oglou is Turkish. An example of the latter would be director Elia Kazan's birth name: Kazandjoglou. Edited by Arvestaked
