  2. Arpa - the way I see it - in this case the matter on hand is not the proper treatment of guests or foreigners. The white elephant in the room is the bold mistreatment or rather the marginalization of those (artists, thinkers, writers, etc) who have enriched our culture and history, who have given us a reason to hold our heads up high ... The same goes for their spouses, parents and children. I consider it the moral duty of our government to ensure these individuals are protected and cared for and the works left behind are properly maintained. Am I dreaming? Probably ... How many of our Greats have their museums? And time is working against us.
  3. Arpa, what response can one expect to such a shameful account? Please don't think that just because we don't "ts-ts-ts" or shake our heads, we don't read these topics and clench our teeth. But what is there to respond? We would only be stating the obvious.

  7. thank you so much for sharing ... not sure why, but my heart sinks when I read positive comments by non-armenians about Armenia and Armenians ... maybe it's because we are presented in a negative light so much (not without a reason), I greatly cherish those instances where others see the "good" in us ...

  15. I am now really really REALLY confused. I marked the HTML checkbox when I posted my reply and it posted just fine ... the Armenian was visible and all. When I checked today it was all gibberish. Then I clicked edit post, did not change anything and saved it ... the Armenian writing was visible again. Am I doing something wrong or is it a glitch in the system?
  16. I think Arpa's explanation is the correct one. This is what we find in the dictionary Arpa is referring to Հմայեակ 1. կախարդություն պարունակող գիր. հմայիլ, պահպանակ 2. հմուտ, ճարտար Hmayak (Hemayag) - 1. writting that entails magical powers, protector 2. skilled, masterly It seems that հմայիլ is the same as համայիլ, which is from the Farsi hemayil, which is an item you hang around your neck to protect you from evil. It is typically a long strip of paper with prayers written on it. I think the name Hmayak (Hemayag) probably means skilled.

This aside (since we'll eventually get used to it)... I noticed that the chronology of some posts has been lost ... for example the Happy Birthday thread.

    GOOD NEWS

When I visited Armenia in 1999 (which was my first trip back since we moved to US) I stayed with Tereza Mirzoyan. Her apartment was a living museum and a sanctuary. It had this distinct aroma of antique furniture, sculpting materials, oil paint and books ... It was intoxicating and so comforting. I have gone back several times since then and regardless of where I have stayed I have not felt as comfortable and "at home" as in her little flat on Tamanyan st ... I am fortunate enough to have one of her sculptures (it's an Angel that watches over our little family) and am fortunate enough to have known her and spent time with her, listening to her fasinating stories of the past ...
  21. I love the idea of this song and video. True - it could have been better ... both the song and the dancing ... but I still like it. I think we need more of such songs instead of the bad Beyonce immitations and sad faced "bayatee"s.
  22. I was just watching this and I have to say that I liked it
