News.am, ArmeniaDec 23 2017 Newspaper: PM Kvirikashvili statement on Armenia causes uproar in Georgia, Azerbaijan11:11, 23.12.2017 YEREVAN. – Friday’s statement by Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili has caused quite a stir in both Georgia and Azerbaijan, according to Zhamanak (Time) newspaper of Armenia. “Kvirikashvili had stated that in force majeure situations, Armenia can make use of the transport corridors of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. “The Upper Lars checkpoint, which links Armenia to Russia, is often closed, which is due to weather conditions when, in the winter months, the road leading to the checkpoint is [often] closed because of snowfall, and in the spring and even in the summer, it [frequently] collapses [because of] floods. “If this statement is carried out and Armenia is able to be linked to Russia via the Roki Tunnel and the Abkhazian railway, Armenia’s economic blockade, initiated by Azerbaijan for 25 years, can be considered eliminated,” wrote Zhamanak. https://news.am/eng/news/428018.html1 point

Dear Arpa - I would extend the apologies, however, I can't get in touch with him either... His phone has been off for a while... I don't even know if he is here in Armenia or back there in the US... anyhow I saw the post about the Raffi issue I might later on comment on that as well!1 point

Dear Ashot, It is so good to see again. Please extend my apologies to our friend Aratta. We miss him. Even though I apologized for having caused merging his threads. Please bring him back. We have so enjoyed his contibutions, except, of course his obsession with the hrya lobby. Screw the hryas. Let's talk about ourselves. How about we talk sbout the likes of Raffi. I saw somewhere that an idiotic linguist/mingist monkey had suggested that Raffi had adopted his penname from "rabbi". How much more rabbish/rubbish can we hsve?1 point

The Kingdom of Commagene, as well as it's predecessor Sophene is indeed an integral part of Armenian history. The first region to be exposed to Hellenization during the Alexandrian invasion, Sophene(Commagene was part of it at this time) was a province of Armenia, until detached by Seleucids and forming a seperate kingdom whose rulers . The rulers were of Orontid extraction. Later commagene was too detached and formed into a seperate kingdom c. 160 B.C. - rulers were orontid too. Antiochos was of Orontid extraction, and his artwork is of Armenian artistic origin. The Armenian Tiara he wore was and still is unique to Armenia. HE may have done this as a suzerain of tigranes, or just because he was Armenian. Commagene remained Armenian ethnically and linguistically until the end of the 1st century BC when it went through Hellenization. Even after that, they continued to use the Armenian tiara on their coinage up till the end in the 70's AD. Nercessian says the Armenian tiara may have been adopted by the Armenian rulers not only as a distinct type of dress, but also to be something common Armenians wore and could relate to, suggesting the tiara was not exclusively Royal. For more on topic see: Toumanoff, Cyril(1963) Studies in Christian Caucasian History, Georgetown University Press Bedoukian, Paul (1985). Coinage of the Armenia Kingdoms of Sophene and Commagene. For me, the first time I saw the pictures of the statues, I couldn’t help feeling that they were Armenian. I think it’s more because of the crowns. I haven’t seen any Roman, Persian or Macedonian crowns that look anything like those of the statues. The Assyrian crown looks a bit like the Armenian but not quite. Then there’s the eagle that also looks like an Armenian eagle. Before some users/abusers spew their hate comments, I’m talking about the feel of the statues to me. I had no idea of the location, history and even the age of those when I saw the photos for the very first time as a kid. At the same age I was completely aware of what Greek or Roman statues looked like, not only because of history books or TV but because we went on a tour to Europe when I was eleven and I would tire my parents visiting Louvres, Vatican, Borghese, British, etc., museums. I just didn’t want to leave… ***** Thank you for your trust Four o Four. I’m not really that knowledgeable but I can tell you this: Some years ago there were a couple of lectures about Commagene in an Armenian center here in Tehran. One important thing that came up was that we (Armenians) were not that concerned with doing research about Armenian heritage. Of course, the region being under Turkish occupation it’s not that easy, if not impossible for Armenian historians, archaeologists, etc. to conduct research on the site. On the other hand who is going to finance such research? Don’t you see similarities in this case with Urartu? Again, we see the statues and the whole history of Commagene is simplified into Mount Nemrut. Historically, the little that I know tells me that in the time of the kingdom of Van (Urartu) and their wars with the Assyrians, Commagene always stood besides and sought the protection of the Armenians. This is long before the invasions of Alexander the Faggot and the fall of the Achaemenid Empire that brought the Seleucids to power and started the so-called Hellenistic period of the region. In the Achaemenid times when Armenia was under their rule, Commagene was a part of the Armenian administration (Satrap), later a part of Yervanduni kingdom by uniting with Ծոփք. Then enter the Seleucids. Also at those lectures, we saw a documentary about Commagene that stated they pushed Marcus Antonius’ army away. According to these facts Commage cannot be Assyrian, Persian, Greek or Roman. The Hitite Empire was also long gone. From Robert Bedrossians website: PTOLEMAEUS, ruling c. 170, independent ruler c. 163-c. 130 B.C. SAMUS II THEOSEBES DIKAIOS, c. 130-c. 100 MITHRIDATES I CALLINICUS, c. 100-c. 70 ANTIOCHUS I THEOS c. 70-c. 35 This Ptolemaeus apparently reestablished the independence of Commagene. Later in times of Tigran it became a part of the Armenian kingdom and after Ardavazd II a part of the Roman Empire’s Assyrian administration. Much later, in the Middle Ages, again part of Armenian dukedoms and later close to the Cilician kingdom. What’s sure, is that the population must have had a considerable Armenian and Assyrian proportion and this is what counts. Commagene being a part of today’s Malatia, these people were destroyed during the Genocide of the last century which put an end to all that history and cultural heritage. Also check this page and scroll down for "Armenian Kingdom of Commagene". This website doesn’t seem to be Armenian.1 point

Watched the show. Very interesting. Always wanted to see Artak. He has good points. The only thing is politics is not his thing. But I really liked his explanation of issues from esoteric, mythological and historical points of view. Nice combination. And I am really proud and happy that current historians in Armenia have such liberal approach to their profession. I mean they do not stay in margins made by other historians and they do their own researches including researches in occult and other esoteric sciences. The other guy Stepan Kiremidjian. Oh god. I think he is an idiot and he shouldn't be there and talk and host a show like that. The guy was very unethical and unarticulated. Absolutely no background of what he is doing and talking about. P.S. I think this thread should be under Mythology section.1 point

Commagene was an Armenian Kingdom along with Sophene so everything in there is naturally Armenian. The map shows it when it was a Roman province. The Gods are Hellenistic (not Hellenic), a fusion of Aegean, Anatolian and Iranic deities. Antiochus I Theos( half Seleucid) founded Nemrut Dağ.1 point

Sun-flavored Speech List Poems I love my sweet Armenia's sun-flavored speech, I love the plaintive musings of our ancient saz, The crimson flowers, the burning fragrance of roses, And the tender-bodies dance of the Nairean girls I love. I love our evening dark sky, the transparent water, the flashing lake, The summer sun, and the winter's dragon hissing a grand blizzard, The forbidding black walls of huts, lost in the night, And the stones of a thousand years and ancient towns. Wherever I may be, I won't forget our songs of sorrow, Nor forget our metal-graved books, now prayers to us, However deeply our bloody suffering probes my heart, I shall yet love my wounded, orphaned sweet Armenia. My heart shall long to know no other tale: Naregatsi, Kouchag - who now possesses their haloed brows? Roam round the world, you'll not find a peak white as Ararat; As the path of glory is endless, so is my love for the Massis mountain.1 point
