Arpa
DAY OF REST?RRALLY? Exodus 20:8-108] Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.[9] Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:[10] But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates8- Յիշեսջի́ր զօրն շաբաթուց սրբե́լ զնա:9- զվեց օր գործեսցես, եւ արասցես զա(մենայ)ն գործս քո:10- յաւուրն եւթներորդի շաբա́թ տ(եառ)ն ա(ստուծո)յ քում, մի́ գործեսցես ՛ի նմա զա(մենայ)ն գործ քո դո́ւ եւ ուստր քո եւ դուստր քո, ծառա́յ քո, եւ աղախին քո. ե́զն քո եւ էշ քո, եւ ա(մենայ)ն անասուն քո. եւ ե́կն քո եւ պանդուխտն քո որ ՛ի քեզSeems the only ones observing that day are our own news media, be it electronic or paper, as if on that day the whole world stops, when in the world media, Sunday is is the biggest day with a million page issues that weigh a ton. Where as the world media jump with. Extra special issues, where the Sunday paper has a million pages and weighs a ton, only our Armenian media observe a Day of Rest. To not forget that Sundays and holidays are the biggest commercial shopping days. Jingle Bells. ԿԻՐԱԿԻ from the Greek KyriakI , Day of the Lord.It is ironic that those who preach to us to keep the Sabbath work the hardest on that day. When did Sunday become a Day of Rest and Church?Somewhere here at the Forum I had written about Sunday becoming a day of Rest and Church.I cannot find it now. Where I said that it is a relatively a new phenomenon, learned and copied from the Reformation Christians. Specially for us Armenians. Where as in our tradition church going was reserved only to special occasions, nor necessarily in Sunday,, as out churches and monasteries were at the most inaccessible places, we relearned the custom of Sunday church from the missionaries in the Diaspora.. The Lord's Day** in Christianity is generally Sunday, the day of communal worship. It is observed by most Christians as the weekly memorial of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is said in the canonical Gospels to have been witnessed alive from the dead early on the first day of the week. (Some Christian groups hold that the term "Lord's Day" can only properly refer to seventh-day Sabbath or Saturday.) The phrase appears in Rev. 1:10.According to some sources, some professed Christians held corporate worship on Sunday in the 1st century. The earliest Biblical example of Christians meeting together on a Sunday for the purpose of "breaking bread" and preaching is cited in the New Testament book The Acts of the Apostles chapter 20 and verse 7 (Acts 20:7). 2nd-century writers such as Justin Martyr attest to the widespread practice of Sunday worship (First Apology, chapter 67), and by 361 AD it had become a mandated weekly occurrence. During the Middle Ages, Sunday worship became associated with Sabbatarian (rest) practices. Some Protestants today (particularly those theologically descended from the Puritans) regard Sunday as Christian Sabbath, a practice known as first-day Sabbatarianism.Sunday was also known in patristic writings as the eighth day, according to the old nundinal cycle. ** I do remember the time when a colleague decided to not attend her own graduation ceremony because it was on the holy Day of Rest-Day of the Lord , despite the pleas by her own parents who themselves were Christian ministers. How does one become more Protestant than Luther, than one’s own parents, and more Catholic than the Pope?
