Ashot II the Iron (Ashot Yerkat) (ruled 914–928) was an Armenian King, the son of King Smbat I. His reign was filled with rebellions by pretenders to the throne, and foreign invasions, which Ashot fought off successfully. This is how he got the epithet the Iron. In 914, Ashot II visited Constantinople to get aid from Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus. He returned to Armenia with large aid, and crushed the Arab harassment of his lands by Yusuf. In 922 he was recognized as the ruler of Armenia by the Arabian khalif. He was married to Marie of Kachum.

Ashot I Bagratuni (Աշոտ Մեծ) was an Armenian prince, with Ashot II, oversaw Armenia's second golden age (862–977). He was born to Smbat the Confessor.

His family, the Bagratunis, was one of the most powerful in the kingdom along with the Artsruni. Both families were struggling for power through warfare against Arab invaders. He was recognized by the Abbasid Caliph as Prince of Princes of Armenia in 862. His later crowning as King of Armenia was consented to by Abbasid Caliph al-Mu'tamid in 885, a move to prevent intrusion into the Armenian territory by Basil I Byzantine emperor, an Armenian. He was succeeded by his son, Smbat I. He reigned for five years until 890 and was married to Katranide.

Here is another Ashot - and then they say Armenians never ruled Georgian lands...

 

 

Ashot II (Georgian: აშოტ I) (died 954) was a Georgian prince of the Bagratid dynasty of Tao-Klarjeti with the Byzantine title of curopalates.

 

Ashot was the second son of Adarnase I, king of Iberia/Kartli and younger brother of David II (r. 923–937). David succeeded Adarnase as titular king of Iberia, but not as curopalates, this honorific being granted by the Byzantine emperor to Ashot. Ashot’s original holding was the duchy of Lower Tao to which he added Upper Tao obtained following the death of his relative Gurgen II of Tao in 941. Ashot II also ed and received from the emperor, c. 952, the Armenian canton of Phasiane.[1]

 

During Ashot’s tenure, the Vita of Saint Grigol Khandzteli was composed by Giorgi Merchule. Ashot actively supported the development of monasticism in Tao-Klarjeti and rebuilt the main church of the monastery at Opiza. Ashot died without heir and his lands and titles passed to his brother King Sumbat I.[1]

 

According to the art historian W. Djobadze, the bas-relief from Opiza which was brought to Georgia at the end of World War I and which is now on display at the State Museum of Fine Arts in Tbilisi, does not render Ashot I Kuropalates (died 830) and the Biblical King David as it has been sometimes assumed, but the 10th century re-builders of the monastery, Ashot II and David II.

Մերօրյա պատմություն հին բերդի կյանքից, կամ թե ինչպես բամբասանքը քանդեց Ցլիկ Ամրամի տունը

 

Կար-չկար Ցլիկ Ամրամ անունով մի մարդ կար: Նա շատ ուժեղ էր ու ջղային, դրա համար էլ համայնքի բնակիչները նրան թաքուն Ցլիկ էին կոչում, բայց իր ներկայությամբ չէին համարձակվում անգամ անունը տալ: Ոչ այնքան հայտնի էր այս Ամրամ անունով բերդապետը, որքան իր գեղեցիկ կինը` մեծ-մեծ աչքերով ու ժպտերես Ասպրամը: Հանգիստ կյանքով էին ապրում բերդապետն ու իր տիկինը, մինչև չհայտնվեց ամբողջ երկրում հայտնի այդ օլիգարխը` Աշոտ անունով, որ մականուն էլ ուներ` Երկաթ: Նրա հայտնվելը բերդում կատարյալ խառնաշփոթ առաջացրեց.

 

-Ա ժղովուրդ, լսել ե˚ք, ասըմ են` Աշոտ Երկաթը եկել ա իրա ախրաննիկներով, մի հատ էլ ծի¥ձի¤ ունի, վեր մհետ քացով տա է¯…

Աշոտ Երկաթը եկավ, ու հետո պարզ դարձավ, որ նա հաճախակի է երևալու այդ կողմերում. կարևոր գործեր ուներ Ամրամի հետ: Ամեն ինչ սկսվեց Աշոտի պատվին կազմակերպված ճաշկերույթին, ուր ներկա էր քաղաքի ողջ էլիտան, հատկապես էլիտար կանայք, ովքեր ականջները չորս արած սպասում էին հարմար առիթի` որսալու օրվա սենսացիան: Նրանք երկար չսպասեցին. հենց ճաշասրահում հայտնվեց գեղադեմ Ասպրամը, Երկաթը նրան նայեց խորաքնին հայացքով, հետո <<պարզ դարձավ>>, որ նա թաքուն համբուրել է բերդապետի տիկնոջ ձեռքը…

Շատ ջրեր հոսեցին, շատ բամբասանքներ պտտվեցին, Ցլիկի ականջին էլ հասան այն էլիտար զրույցները, որոնք իրենց շրջապտույտի մեջ էին առել Երկաթին ու բերդապետի տիկնոջը: Խանդոտ ամուսինը փակեց Ասպրամին բերդի վերնահարկերից մեկում, տիկինը մի քանի օր հրաժարվեց ուտելիք ընդունել, մի առավոտ էլ ամուսինը կնոջը գտավ անշնչացած` կախված առաստաղից…

 

Հ.Գ. Ցլիկ Ամրամին պատկանող Բերդի շրջակայքում վերջին պեղումներից մեկի ժամանակ բերդից դուրս գտնվող վայրում հայտնաբերվեց կնոջ կմախք, որի վրայի զարդերից ենթադրվեց, որ այն Ցլիկ Ամրամի կնոջն է պատկանում, բացի այդ, Ասպրամը չէր կարող թաղվել իր մերձավորների կողքին, քանի որ քրիստոնեական կարգն արգելում էր մեղսակից ինքնասպանի մարմինը թաղել գերեզմանոցում…

Այդտեղ էլ շարված էին վրաններ, այդտեղ էլ վառվում էին խարույկներ, բայց այդտեղի զինվորները բոլորովին այլ տպավորություն էին թողնում: Սրանց դեմքն այնքան ահարկու և վայրենի չէր, ինչպես առաջիններինը և այնքան խիստ ու ահարկու տպավորություն չէր գործում: Թուխ դեմքերով էին, բայց կորովի և քաջ, և հայկական արյունը հոսում էր նրանց երակների մեջ: Այդ գունդը հայկական գունդն էր, որ բռնում էր Յուսուֆ ոստիկանի աջ կողմը և արաբական հրոսակների հետ միասին եկել պաշարել էր Կապույտ բերդը: Նա հայոց թագավորին բռնել էր ուզում: Նա ծարավի էր նրա արյան... I was about to say that the author is bent on iconoclasm/պատկերամարտում, but upon further reading it turns out this Gagik (Artsrouni) is not the other Gagik,(Bagratuni) the last boy king of Ani. Among others of the same name this Gagik (879-943, also known as Gagik-Khachik) is the “king” of Vaspurakan who collaborated with the Arab governor (vostikan) against his uncle Ashot Bagratuni in the hopes that he would be crowned as “king“ of all Armenia.

I can’t find his full biography on thze internet, even if he is mentioned contextually in many indirect entries. Somewhere we read. “Գագիկ Ա (Արծրունի)մասնակցել է Սմբատ Ա ի դէմ Յուսուփի կռիւներինեւ իր կենդրոնախոյս քաղականաքով ջլատել Հայաստանի հզօրութիւնը, համոզուելով որ Յուսուփը ձգտում էր վերացնել Վասպուրականի անկախութիւնը”**

Note. There are three Gagik-s, beside the above, of course Gagik II, the last Bagratuni king, and Gagik Abbasian , king of Kars(1029-65)
