ԶՈՒԱՐԹՆՈՑ ZVARTNOTS

 

It means HOUSE of ANGELS.

 

Why is Zvartnots, one of the most fabled, sacred historical land mark not being re-erected?

At my last visit the fragments were scattered all over in an helter-skelter manner. One lame excuse I have heard is that the architects have not yet figured how to reconstruct the three tiered monument. OH YEAH! Where are Trdat** and Sinan? Some say the latter was Armenian. Which Armenian landmark and cathedral did he design? The present trend is the easier and cheaper alternative of piling one primitively ugly stone on top of other and calling it a cathedral or monastery. Observe the ornate masonry and artistry at the ruins of Zvartnots below.

Or is it because Zvartnots may overshadow the neighboring Ejmiatsin?

Honestly, I was so surprised and disappointed to see how small Ejmiatsin Cathedral is. It sure is not a Notre Dame. or St. Sophia.

Տրդատ ճարտարապետ (շուրջ 940— մահվան թվականն անհայտ է, հավանաբար` 1020 թ. հետո), Բագրատունի հարստության դարաշրջանի հայ ճարտարապետ և քանդակագործ: Շինարարություն է ծավալել հիմնականում Շիրակում:Նրանից հետո, երբ Աշոտ Գ թագավորը 961թ. տեղափոխեց մայրաքաղաքը Կարսից Անի, այնտեղ տեղափոխվեց նաև կաթողիկոսական աթոռը: Տրդատը կառուցեց Անիի մայր տաճարը և կաթողիկոսարանի շենքը: Ըստ հայ պատմիչների (Ստեփանոս Տարոնեցի և այլք) վկայության, այն բանից հետո, երբ Կոստանդնուպոլսում երկրաշարժից հետո փլվել է Սբ. Սոֆիայի մայր տաճարի գմբեթը, Տրդատն է հրավիրվում այն վերականգնելու համար: Այդ աշխատանքներն ավարտվում են 994թ.:

Վավեր վկայություններ կան, որ նա կառուցել է Արգինայի կաթողիկոսարանի Կաթողիկե եկեղեցին (973–977), Գագկաշեն Ս. Գրիգոր եկեղեցին (1001–10, Գագիկ Ա Բագրատունի թագավորի հանձնարարությամբ): Տրդատին է վերագրվում Հաղպատի վանքի ամենահին եկեղեցու` Սբ. Նշանի, Սանահինի վանքի Ս. Ամենափրկիչ, Մարմաշենի վանքի գլխավոր եկեղեցին, Անիի Ս. Փրկիչ եկեղեցին, Արգինայի կաթողիկոսարանի համալիրը, Անիի Սմբատաշեն պարիսպի և այլ հուշարձանների կառուցումը:

It is rumored that this was designed by the Armenian architects Trdat and redesigned by Sinan.

ԶՈՒԱՐԹ sometimes written as ԶՎԱՐԹ. On the surface to mean “ուրախ/happy, glad, խնդումերես/smiley face, angel” comes to us from the Assyrian.. When we say ուրախ զուարթourakh zvart we may refer to “happy awakening”. Pay special attention to “արթ/arth” ending. Does it have to do with արթնանել, զարթնել, զարթոնք, awakening? Referring to angels who are forever awake? BTW. When it is spelled as ԶՈՒԱՐԹ in in classical Armenian it is meant cto be read as “զ-ու- արթz-warth/zwarth” not “զվարթzvarth”.When did “զուա/zwa” become “zva”” Don’t tell me , it happened after we met those damn people who don’t have the sound of W. We do? Yeah!!! We did. Only if we stop speaking Perso-Russo-furkish. NWhat do you think the letter Ւ/ U/Hyun is?

There may be a need to form a society dedicated to the reconstruction of Zvartnots, preferably in the Diaspora, to lobby, finance and promote, including non-Armenian architectural archeologists to guarantee that the funds will not be wasted to use inferior materials and techniques and pocket the spoils.
