LOS ANGELES—During a hearing Friday on the Sassounian special circumstance retrial case, presiding judge Robert Perry ordered the prosecution to provide a list of witnesses by April 3 that could back the "national origin" claim, on which the district attorney is opting to build its case.

 

The prosecution proposed to introduce experts who will attempt to prove that the crime for which Hampig Sassounian is serving a life sentence was prompted by the national origin of the victim.

 

Sassounian is serving a life sentence for the alleged murder of Turkey's Consul General to Los Angeles Kemal Arikan in 1981.

 

In 2000, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned Sassounian's special circumstance, citing irregularities with the prosecution's case at the time of the trial. This ruling provided Sassounian with the opportunity to seek parole.

 

In September 2001, however, Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley opted to retry the special circumstance portion of the case, awakening a 20-year-old case, a move that experts and critics are saying was motivated by the Sept. 11 attacks on the US.

 

Sassounian attorney Mark Geragos told Asbarez Friday that judge Perry has given Deputy District Attorney Gregory Dohi until April 3 to file his list of "junk science" witnesses as they are called. Geragos will have an opportunity to file his own motion based on the prosecution's list by April 22.

 

Judge Perry set a May 10 hearing date, at which time he will determine whether the witnesses on the DA's list will be called or not.

 

"The community needs to come together with me to address the proposed testimony," said Geragos called on the community to become more actively involved in the case.

 

On February 22, the Sassounian Defense Committee organized a successful fund-raising event, during which more than $70,000 was raised for the defense efforts.

 

The committee, which has been working diligently since the onset of the case, commended the community for its continuous assistance and urged the community come together and ensure that this case will yield the desired outcome for Sassounian.

 

 

 

2. ARS Elects New Central Executive Board

ATHENS—At the conclusion of its 67th International Convention, the Armenian Relief Society Inc., members elected a new Central Executive Board, which is mandated to lead the organization for the next three years.

 

A nine-person board was elected composed of the following members: Maro Minassian (Boston), Marguerite Stepanian (Providence, RI), Mayda Garabedian (Philadelphia), Hasmig Derderian (Pasadena), Anahid Meymarian (San Fernando Valley), Houri Nadjarian (Canada), Alvart Petrossian (Armenia), Helen Merdjanian (France) and Silva Moutafyan-Kahtalian (Brazil).

 

Per the ARS by-laws, alternates are also elected, in the event that one or more members of the elected board cannot complete their term.

 

The following ARS members were elected as alternates: Sandra Vartanian (Eastern US), Sona Peltekian (Western US), Maro Froundjian (Canada), Karine Hovanesyan (Armenia), Lucy Shangyan (Europe) and Isabelle Atarian (South America).

 

The four-day meeting was the venue for discussion and planning of the ARS International's upcoming programs and projects and was participated by delegates representing 23 ARS regions around the world.

Vincent entered not guilty pleas on all charges and, despite concerns expressed by prosecutors, the court released him Wednesday morning without electronic monitoring.

US Allocates $100 million in Security Aid to Azerbaijan in 2018-19

The Trump Administration has substantially ramped up security assistance to Azerbaijan, amounting to more than $100 million in fiscal years (FY) 2018-19, according to budget data compiled by the Security Assistance Monitor, part of the Center for International Policy, a Washington think tank. Whereas the assistance appears to be part of U.S. strategy to increase pressure against Iran and focuses on Azerbaijan’s Iranian border, it also has direct implications for Armenia.

According to the data, under Section 333 “Building Partner Capacity” programs implemented by the Department of Defense (DoD), Azerbaijan was due to receive $58.6 million in FY 2018 and $42.9 million in FY2019. By comparison U.S. security aid to Azerbaijan in FY 2016-17 did not exceed $3 million a year.

As DoD notified Congress on April 27, 2018, it was spending $47.5 million on Azerbaijan’s “Southern Border Security: communications, electronics, construction, maritime interdiction equipment, and vehicles,” $11.1 million on “Maritime Security for the Capsian (sic!) Sea: communications, electronics, construction, maritime interdiction equipment, and vehicles,” and $80,000 on “human rights training.”

House of Reps adopts resolution on Christian Heritage in Turkey

The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously adopted via a voice vote, H. Res. 306, urging the Republic of Turkey to safeguard its Christian heritage and to return confiscated church properties to their rightful owners, reported the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly).

"This bipartisan bill reflects America's values and represents an important step towards preserving the heritage of the Armenian community and other minority communities within Turkey," stated the Legate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church, Archbishop Vicken Aykazian in Washington, DC.

Prior to today's action, the Armenian Assembly sent a letter to all Members of Congress urging a "YES" vote. H. On the occasion of the Eastern Partnership Summit held today in Brussels, the European Union concluded negotiations with Armenia for a new aviation agreement. It is estimated that this agreement will bring an additional 87.000 additional passengers and will generate more than €16 million in the first five years. This agreement will improve market access for airlines, providing better connectivity, more choice and lower fares for travellers. More flights also mean more jobs and more wealth for all partners.

 

Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc said, “Today we are further delivering on our ambitious aviation strategy by taking our aviation relations with Armenia to the next level. This agreement will not only improve market access, it will also contribute to the highest safety, security and environmental standards. This is good news for European and Armenian travellers and businesses.”

 

Besides market access, these agreements will establish a common regulatory framework, for instance in the fields of aviation safety and security. This agreement was negotiated by the European Commission as part of its Aviation Strategy for Europe, a milestone initiative to give a new boost to European aviation and provide new business opportunities.  

 

Next steps:

 

The Armenian delegation has agreed to recommend its authorities to sign the agreement following the completion of the necessary internal procedures.

 

Background information

The European Commission is currently negotiating new aviation agreements with the Association of Southeast Asian Nationals (ASEAN), Qatar, Tunisia and Turkey. Once signed, over 75% of all passengers flying in and out of the EU, or more than 240 million passengers per year, would be covered by EU-level aviation agreements.

 

In addition the EU has already negotiated with partners like the US, Canada, Morocco, Jordan, the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Israel, Georgia, Moldova and Switzerland which have already brought significant benefits. For instance, passenger numbers have doubled with partners such as the Western Balkans, Morocco, and Georgia.
