Western Armenia will be represented on the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous (autochthones?) People
Second session at the UN
The Delegation of Western Armenia will be represented on the United Nations. Led by Mr. Aprahamian Arménag it will participate in the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Geneva from 10 to 15 August 2009.
The following points will be addressed by the delegation:
1 / Report on lessons learned and challenges for realizing the right to education of indigenous people
During the second session an item on the agenda will be devoted to the presentation by the expert mechanism on the study of the lessons learned and challenges for realizing the right to education of indigenous people. At the end, the Expert Mechanism will invite participants and observers to comment on the study before adopting the final version thereof.
The main concern of the delegation shall correspond to the establishment of a training program of the Armenian language, history over the ages, from kindergarten to elementary school and its practice in Western Armenia and Javakhk.
2 / Discussion on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
3 / meetings with the Special Reporter on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people
The Special Reporter will be invited to attend the second session of the Expert Mechanism. During the session, he will devote two days - Tuesday and Wednesday, 11-12 August 2009 - the holding of parallel meetings with indigenous representatives who wish to submit information concerning alleged human rights violations.
On this occasion, will be studied issues relating to the Genocide of Armenians in Western Armenia, the destruction of the cemetery in Nakhichevan - Djugha and in general in Armenian cultural heritage.
4 / Celebration of the International Day of the World's Indigenous People
Since August 9 (Sunday) is the International Day of Indigenous People of the world, the Expert Mechanism will celebrate this day on 10 August 2009, at the opening of its second session.
The anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Sevres (10 August 1920) and the celebration of International Day of Indigenous Peoples of the world are on the same date, this is not due to chance.
5 / Events and Exhibitions
During the session, from Tuesday to Friday (from 11 to 14 August 2009), events may be held from 13h15 to 14h45. Due to the limited availability of rooms, only two events will take place everyday.
The Mechanism of Experts encourages the organization of events that contribute to its mandate and in particular on the agenda of the session, particularly regarding indigenous people’s right to education and the UN Declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples.
In this context, the delegation requested the expert mechanism to present a conference on the destruction of the cemetery in Nakhichevan-Djugha, and the situation of the Armenian cultural heritage in Western Armenia.
