I recently met with some people from Armenia, which told me about deplorable demographic situation.

This year schools could hardly form one or two classes. This is the year when kids born in 1992-1993 (most difficult years in Armenia) are going to first grade. Schools are practically empty.

Obstetricians are out of work. A friend of mine in Yerevan, works as an obstetrician. She said that beds at the obstetrics hospital are hardly 10% filled.

Based on flour/bread usage statistics, it was estimated that about 600,000 are living in Yerevan now. This is down from 1.1 mil in 1985.

This is really depressing. I think not many of us picture the situation in its entiry gravity. I left Armenian in 1995. I feel now guilty and sorry for what I did. I don't know... Maybe we could come up with some kind of rotating shcedule that we can go and live there for 5 years or something...

Come on people quit being so pessimistic! Do you really think the future is doomed for Armenians? We have survived the Greek,Roman,Arab,Mongol, Turkish and Russian invasions. Even if every single Armenian leaves Armenia, there will still be an Armenian people. Here is my own modest plan:

1. Forge stronger economic and other ties with Greece and Iran, traditional allies

2. Continue the long arduous process of ties with the EU, Armenians are way more European in attitude and culture than those Mongols next door who want to be European

3. Offer some kind of modest incentive for Armenians in the republic to have more children, tax breaks(are they already doing this Berj?)

4. Promote Tourism with a vengeance. I have yet to see an ad for visiting Armenia in any Travel magazine. You see ads for Nepal, Oman, Maldives, Belize and every other obscure country, but where is Armenia? There are numerous Americans who have the"been there, done that" attitude who may not even be aware of the attractions of Armenia. This will include working on throwing off the seventy years of socialism which bred rudeness in the service industries.

5. Seek a certain cold peace with Turkey. Like it or not Armenia is stuck with Turkey as a neighbor, they aren't going to pack up their yurts and go back to Mongolia. Greece is already doing this, it is time for Armenia to follow suit. This can be a la the cold peace between Egypt and Israel. It doesn't mean Armenia needs to become buddy buddy with Turkey.

I am sure these proposals will be criticized , fine, then come up with some of your own then.

CENSUS DRESS REHEARSAL TO BE HELD SEPTEMBER 6-15
YEREVAN, AUGUST 25, ARMENPRESS:
A 2000 Census Dress Rehearsal will be held in the town of Spitak and in 8 villages of Ararat province from September 6 to September 15, the results of which will serve as a basis for holding the general census in October 10-19, 2001, the head of the Armstat Stepan Mnatsakanian announced at a press conference August 25.

He said that the dress rehearsal would be the first chance to test a package of census directions allocated by the US experts, a group of which is currently in Armenia to help prepare Armenian specialists.

Underlining the importance of holding the census, Mnatsakanian said that 17,000 people will be involved in conducting it , and the summed up results will be released in 2002. According to him, approximately $1 is to be spent on each respondent, and in total about 1 billion 750 mln Drams are earmarked for it, but he said that due to thrifty manner of conducting the census the real expenses will be much more less. He added that 45 million Drams were allocated for holding the dress rehearsals.

The last census was held in Armenia in 1989, after the disastrous earthquake in Spitak and the accelerating Karabagh conflict.

Farsi jan,
1. There have been no Russian invasions on Armenia. There have been on Norther Caucasus, Central Asia, Baltics, Eastern Europe, but not on Armenia. They saved us form physical extinction. I mean the real Russians and not Lenin or Stalin.

2.Considering all those gay rights legislations being forced on Armenia at a time when they are the most irrelevant subject, I don't think I want to be that "European" any more.

3.They don't do this effectively and they will never do in the near future. They'd better stop broadcasting *** movies on TV and do smth. with economy.

4.Attractions of Armenia, I meen Ararat, food and the churches are not enough for tourism. We must have casinos and *** attractions to attract tourists, because we don't have sea and beaches. Industry, science and agriculture must be the priority and not tourism, or else we will become a "banana country".

5.Greece is being forced to do it. Turks captured half of Cyprus and nobody cares. If we make peace we will be forced to give Karabagh and Zangezour.

We must eliminate corruption, develop economy and wait.
