YEREVAN, MARCH 1, ARMENPRESS. An Armenian citizen who arrived to Armenia on February 28 on the special flight from Iran has been tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-2019).

The case was confirmed early morning Sunday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced on social media.

He said the patient sought medical treatment himself. The man, 29,  was tested twice.

The patient’s wife, who arrived with him on the same flight, tested negative. The patient is feeling well, he said.

Pashinyan said the government is now taking the necessary measures as envisaged by WHO rules.

All direct contacts, including a cab driver and the border officer at the airport, of the patient will be quarantined.

PM Pashinyan said the authorities had taken all necessary safety measures on the flight.

A total of 30 people will be quarantined on March 1, he said. They will be provided with high-level isolated accommodation services.

The ruling Civil Contract party will convene a meeting on March 1 to discuss the possibility of cancelling the scheduled procession in honor of the victims of the 2008 unrest on the same day. The Prime Minister said he favors a cancellation.

“All necessary measures are being taken to prevent an outbreak. On 12:00 Minister of Healthcare Arsen Torosyan will convene a press conference and will give updates. I call for maintaining calm, trust only official information and follow the preventive measures advised by the Ministry of Healthcare”, PM Pashinyan said.

Last week Armenia closed its border with Iran for two-weeks. The closure does not cover citizens of both countries willing to repatriate. Two special flights were organized to repatriate Armenian nationals from Tehran. They were screened and accompanied by healthcare workers.

Armenia uses resort town defunct hotel to quarantine 32 direct contacts of coronavirus patient

1006849.jpg 12:39, 1 March, 2020

YEREVAN, MARCH 1, ARMENPRESS. 32 direct contacts of the first coronavirus patient in Armenia have been quarantined, Healthcare Minister Arsen Torosyan told a news conference.

He said the contacts of the patient will undergo the quarantine period at the defunct Golden Palace Hotel in Tsakhkadzor, a resort town in Armenia.

“According to the latest information the citizen who tested positive for the coronavirus doesn’t have any symptoms now, despite having fever at the time of seeking medical assistance. The patient’s wife tested negative,” the minister said.

Torosyan said all necessary countermeasures are being taken in the country.

He emphasized that it is the constitutional right of any citizen to return to their country, referring to the man having been flown in by the special flight from Iran on February 28.

He said there healthcare specialists accompanying the passengers of the flights, and everyone was provided with protective masks. None of the passengers had any symptoms upon screening and thus were sent home. Asked why all of the passengers weren’t quarantined at once, the minister said such actions aren’t proven to be effective.

“Passengers who arrived from Tehran exited the airport through a special exit. If a coronavirus infection is confirmed on an airplane, the standard procedure is to quarantine passengers seated on the same row and two rows in front and in back, and we are doing just that. The man who drove the patient and his wife home from the airport is also quarantined. He wasn’t a cab driver, as reported earlier,” he said, adding that the man was hospitalized by an ambulance and the first responders are also quarantined.

He reminded that Armenia began countermeasures since January 22, and all actions have proven effective, with only this single imported cases being recorded so far.

Armenia announced a partial shutdown of the border with Iran on February 24 as the Islamic Republic reported an outbreak of the novel coronavirus. The Armenian government announced that the closure features some exceptions, such as freight transport and citizens of both countries willing to repatriate. Freight transport’s from Iran are being monitored on Armenian territory and drivers are being screened.

Two special flights were organized from Tehran to repatriate Armenian nationals from Iran, one on February 26 and the second on February 28. A total of 134 people were airlifted.

The 29-year-old man who tested positive for the virus had arrived on the second flight.

YEREVAN, MARCH 1, ARMENPRESS. As of March 1, Armenia has 1000 test kits for the novel coronavirus (COVID-2019), and an additional 3000 will be imported next week, Healthcare Minister Arsen Torosyan said. 1000 of the tests will be brought from the US.

He said the test kits are being donated by international organizations.

“Several other directions of acquiring the tests kits are also being considered, particularly China and England. At this moment we have no problems in this matter,” Torosyan said.

He said the entire healthcare system is working actively and all necessary actions are being taken.

Armenia shuts down schools and universities after first coronavirus case

Share

1006858.jpg 16:03, 1 March, 2020

YEREVAN, MARCH 1, ARMENPRESS. Shortly after the first novel coronavirus case was confirmed in Armenia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced that all educational institutions, including schools, universities and kindergartens, will be shut down for 1 week in an effort to prevent a possible outbreak.

“We need to take some time to deeper understand what is happening”, he said in a live Facebook broadcast.

Pashinyan said this decision technically means that the spring break will start one week earlier than expected.

The PM said that the government’s anti-coronavirus task force is working round-the-clock. He called on the general public to trust only official information. “We will overcome this situation with honor and come out stronger”, he said.

The Armenian PM emphasized that public health is the government’s top priority and that the public will be provided with all necessary information.

He said will personally tour the pharmacies in Yerevan to get to know the situation on the shortage of some items, namely masks.

He said Armenia will not impose a total shutdown of the border with Iran. Currently a partial shutdown is in force since February 24.

Speaking about the quarantine of the direct contacts of the first confirmed case, he called on the public not to make panic over the fact that the contacts have been taken to the resort town of Tsakhkadzor. 31 people have been quarantined at the defunct Golden Palace hotel in the resort town. Pashinyan said that some people started cancelling hotel reservations in other hotels in the city after the news, and emphasized that this is completely unnecessary and unsubstantiated. Pashinyan emphasized that Tsakhkadzor must resume its normal life and it shouldn’t be considered as a “risk zone” by visitors.

Armenia PM: Armenian infected with coronavirus is well, doesn't even have fever
12:23, 01.03.2020

Our compatriot who was infected with coronavirus is well and doesn’t even have a fever. This is what Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan reported on his Facebook page.

“Dear compatriots,

1. Today’s march dedicated to the memory of the victims of the events of March 1, 2008 has been canceled.

2. Our compatriot infected with coronavirus is well and doesn’t even have a fever.

3. The process of isolating persons with whom the patient has had contact, is drawing to an end. They are all determined to collaborate, for which I express my gratitude.

4. It turned out that the patient hadn’t sat in a taxi after arriving from Tehran. He left the airport in the car of an acquaintance who had arrived in the same plane, and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance truck; this is good because the potential scope of interaction has become significantly narrow.

5. As I had said, Minister of Healthcare Arsen Torosyan will hold a press conference at 12:00 and answer all questions,” he stated.

1007602.jpg 16:02, 6 March, 2020

YEREVAN, MARCH 6, ARMENPRESS. Two suspected cases of the novel coronavirus in Artsakh tested negative, the Artsakh healthcare ministry said.

The samples of the tests were sent to Yerevan yesterday.

“We urge the people not to publish unchecked information and spread disinformation. We call on them to rely on the official news in order to avoid fake reports and follow the measures proposed by the healthcare ministry aimed at preventing the spread of the disease”, the Artsakh healthcare ministry said in its statement.

Earlier it was reported that two suspected coronavirus cases have been detected in Artsakh. The two persons came to Artsakh from Iran on February 20.

The government of Artsakh informed that complex measures are being taken to prevent the spread of acute respiratory infections. Overall, over three dozen samples of tests were sent to Armenia, and according to the information of the healthcare ministry as of now the results of all tests were negative.

Armenia confirms 3 new cases of coronavirus
20:56, 11.03.2020

Armenia has confirmed three new cases of coronavirus. This is what Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan wrote on his Facebook page.

“Today, unfortunately, Armenia recorded three new cases of coronavirus.

Two of the infected are citizens of Armenia aged 45 and 27, and one is a citizen of Italy, who is 51 years old and works in Armenia. All three arrived from Italy.

The circle of their interactions is being clarified in order to isolate them, and according to preliminary information, it isn’t a large circle.

The citizen of Italy and one of the citizens of Armenia don’t have complaints, but the other citizen of Armenia has pneumonia.

The patients were registered as soon as they arrived.

Predicting that there were going to be questions why the government didn’t make a decision to stop flights from Italy, I must say that the government considered the possibility several times and came to the conclusion that the potential infected people can arrive in Armenia from Italy’s neighboring countries such as France and Austria since there are no restrictions within the EU.

In other words, with the same logic, the government had to close borders with other EU member states, especially since the coronavirus is also spreading to other countries across Europe.

Now airline companies have decided to cancel flights from Italy.

I must say that the people staying at Golden Palace Hotel and the first diagnosed patient are fine and have no complaints.

Dear compatriots, I ask you to keep calm and follow the advice of the Ministry of Healthcare regarding the preventive measures,” he wrote.

Analyst: Coronavirus situation dealt major blow to tourism in Armenia
18:25, 11.03.2020

During a conversation with reporters today, representative of the Office for Economic Research of the Bureau of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun political party, economist Suren Parsyan said he hopes the coronavirus situation is solved by April since the virus has dealt a major blow to tour operators and tourism in Armenia, for that matter.

According to the analyst, people aren’t taking any trips abroad, and the country has recorded a decline in the flow of tourists. The economist added that this deals a major blow to small travel agencies, most of which are closing their doors.

Moreover, as the analyst stated, flights in several directions have already been canceled. Parsyan also stated that if Armenia follows the example of Georgia and Azerbaijan and closes its borders, this will make the situation more complicated than it already is.

According to Parsyan, the coronavirus situation clearly showed the weak sides of Armenia’s economy and domestic policy, and the government needs to be more attentive to healthcare and pay special attention to the development of state clinics and hospitals, not close them.

Economist: Coronavirus will hit Armenia tourism very hard
15:34, 13.03.2020

YEREVAN. – The coronavirus will hit the tourism sector in Armenia very hard. Chairman of the Republican Union of Employers of Armenia, economist Gagik Makaryan, said this during a meeting with journalists.

In his opinion, there will be a rather serious decline in this sector. "The number of tourists and students from Iran has already reduced considerably in Armenia," the economist emphasized, "and this trend will continue."

Makaryan noted that flights to other countries are being canceled, and the amount which Armenia would have received on the account of the tourism sector would not actually materialize.

According to the analyst, as a result, small and medium-sized businesses involved in the tourism sector will suffer greatly. "The fall of the coronavirus is predicted fall," the head of the Republican Union of Employers of Armenia explained. "That is to say, it turns out that this year is lost for us."

Makaryan, however, is confident that the Armenian authorities will be able to implement a flexible policy aimed at combating coronavirus and preventing its further spreading in the country, and this may allow for increased opportunities in the tourism sector. The analyst believes that this will not only attract tourists, especially from Russia, but will also enable Armenia’s residents to spend their tourism-related money in the homeland.

Armenia PM isolates himself with family in Sevan, to get tested for coronavirus
23:23, 13.03.2020

Nikol Pashinyan and his family have isolated themselves at their mansion in Sevan. Pashinyan stated that he and his wife will get tested for coronavirus tomorrow.

“We had been worried since yesterday since one of the assistants to the President of Brazil had tested positive for coronavirus, the President has also been tested and is waiting for the response. We learned about this yesterday and decided to isolate ourselves. This evening, on the way to Sevan, we found out that the President of Brazil had tested positive for coronavirus. On March 7, Anna had a meeting with the wife of the President of Brazil, and unfortunately, they hugged each other and took a photo. First, we measured our temperature, but we didn’t have a high temperature. However, later, the news about the President of Brazil testing positive for coronavirus was denied. However, we will remain isolated, and tomorrow morning we will get tested to be sure that everything is fine,” Pashinyan said.

Armenia – 20 Coronavirus cases, PM and wife in self-isolation
JAMnews, Yerevan
March 14, 2020

200 people are in quarantine throughout country, while a number of airlines have canceled flights to Yerevan

original-1-785x487.jpg

The number of coronavirus cases in Armenia is growing daily – 20 cases have now been recorded in the country, and one of those infected has pneumonia. Around 200 people are being held in quarantine.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his wife Anna Akopyan have been tested for the virus. During their recent visit to Brazil, Anna Akopyan hugged the Brazilian president’s wife. After this encounter, news agency O Dia, citing a government source, reported that the Brazilian president had tested positive for coronavirus.

Later, it was discovered that the result was actually negative. However, Nikol Pashinyan and Anna Hakobyan decided to go through all the necessary procedures and isolated themselves until they received the results from their own tests.

On the evening of March 14, it was reported that they were both in good health.

The latest numbers

The number of infected people continued to grow throughout the day on March 14.

First, the Minister of Health Arsen Torosyan said that the total number of infected had reached 15, and that 200 people were in quarantine:

We just tested 38 more people, 36 of which turned out to be negative, and two positive. Patients who tested positive are epidemiologically related to the case in Echmiadzin and were isolated from the beginning.”

The case in Echmiadzin refers to a coronavirus patient who was diagnosed on March 11. She returned to Armenia from Italy and refused to stay home in quarantine. In the 10 days before her diagnosis, she attended a number crowded events, including an engagement party.

Now, the several dozen people invited to this celebration are in quarantine, and some were infected.

Until March 11, there had only been one case in Armenia. The infected had traveled from Iran, and all those who had contact with him were in quarantine. Now, the number is growing exponentially.

As of the evening of March 14, there are 20 confirmed coronavirus cases in Armenia.

Will coronavirus affect the referendum?

In light of the growing number of COVID-19 cases, more and more people are beginning to discuss cancelling, or at least postponing, the constitutional referendum scheduled for April 5.

The question of whether to terminate the powers of six judges and the head of the Constitutional Court, who took office under the previous administration, will be put to a popular vote. The authorities also intend to adopt a declaration based on the results of the referendum, which includes an official assessment of the activities of the former authorities over the past 30 years.

According to current legislation, a referendum can be canceled or postponed if a state of emergency or martial law is declared. Whether this will be the case with the virus is not yet clear.

Fewer flights to Armenia

Due to the coronavirus, some airlines have canceled their flights to Yerevan, said Satenik Hovhannisyan, head of the PR department of Zvartnots Airport:

Flights on the following airlines have been canceled:

Ryanair: Yerevan – Milan, Yerevan – Rome;

Armenia Airlines: Yerevan – Lyon, Yerevan – Tel Aviv;

Qatar Airways: Doha – Yerevan;

Belavia: Minsk – Yerevan;

Fly Dubai: Dubai – Yerevan;

Pegasus: planning to cancel flights from Sochi – Yerevan.”

Armenian PM and wife test negative for coronavirus

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his spouse Anna Hakobyan have tested negative for coronavirus.

Given that Anna Hakobyan had just return from a trip to Brazil, the couple self-isolated before the results would be ready.

The decision was made after reports emerged that an aide to the President of Brazil had tested positive for coronavirus, and the results of President Jair Bolsonaro’s test were pending.

Some media outlets reported on Friday that the Prsident had tested positive, but the news was shortly refuted.

On a visit to Brazil last week, Mrs. Anna Hakobyan had a meeting with the President’s wife

Armenia declares one-month state of emergency for coronavirus

YEREVAN (Reuters) - Armenia on Monday declared a state of emergency until April 14 to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, and postponed a referendum on changes to the Constitutional Court until after the emergency.

Armenia, a country of 3 million people, had reported 52 coronavirus cases as of the end of Monday, the highest number among countries in the South Caucasus region.

All educational institutions will remain shut until the end of the emergency, and the borders with neighboring Georgia and Iran will be closed, the government said.

Foreigners from countries with a high incidence of coronavirus will be barred from entering, while Armenian citizens will be able to leave only by air. The transportation of goods will continue.

Public events and mass gatherings with over 20 people are also banned.

The referendum, which had been planned for April 5, is due to decide on the suspension of seven judges who were appointed before a peaceful revolution against corruption and cronyism brought Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to power two years ago.

Armenia’s neighbor Georgia said it would ban all foreigners from entering for two weeks from March 18 in an effort to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Georgia has confirmed 33 cases, the highest number in the South Caucasus region. Two patients have recovered while 637 people are in quarantine. Many restaurants, cafes and bars in Tbilisi, the capital, closed their doors on Monday on government advice.

Winter resorts in Georgia, a country of 3.7 million that is a popular tourist destination, will shut down from Tuesday.
