I usually not anal about this kind of stuff but you made a mistake. It's hyperthyroidism not hyperthyroiditis. There's no such term.

-itis = inflammation
-ism = a state of the body

Actually there is: http://books.google....cher des livres

While it is true that 'itis' is supposed to represent the infammation itself, while the ''ism'' is meant to represent the condition of over production of the hormone, it has been used interchangeably. Check the first two books for exemple they use the term to only represent overactive.

But you smart @ smile.gif are right, in term of the language itself.
