If you are wary of believing in miracles, I’d suggest you go visit Karo Karapetyan’s olive orchard in Meghri.
It has survived the particularly harsh winter months and is now blooming.
Like many others, Karo used to be engaged in the wholesale trade, never thinking that working the land could provide an adequate living wage.
Touching base with a number of suppliers of imported goods, Karo noticed that much of their product was hardly being sold, including olives.
He’d go around distributing thousands of cans of olives to this and that store and, by his reckoning, the retail price was being increased several times before reaching the consumer shelves.
Karo consulted with a number of specialists regarding the cultivation of olives in the Meghri region. That was 12 years ago. Today, he manages a six hectare olive orchard.
“It was really difficult at first. In 2002, most of the olive vines froze and died,” he says.
Karo also recalls asking then President Robert Kocharyan, who was visiting Meghri, for an easy term loan to get back on his feet. Karo says that the president promised to assist him but that he never heard back from Kocharyan.
To raise funds, Karo sold off a number of apartments he had amassed in Yerevan.
The plan paid off in the long run. Last year, Karo harvested his first olive crop – 5.5 tons in all.
“Our olives are of superior quality when compared to the canned stuff being imported. We had no problems selling the harvest,” Karo says.
The olive farmer says he and his brother will can the olives themselves and that they won’t need additional credit.
“Olives are a fickle crop. That’s why I decided to irrigate the orchard with clean potable water even though I could have used water from the Arax River. It was a huge expense.”
He told me that over time local residents had moved away from farming and gardening, even though the soil of Meghri is quite fertile.
“People started to work in the mines and at the customs house on the border. They neglected the land under their feet,” Karo notes.
He says that if the government continues to pay attention to rural agriculture, the land can not only sufficiently feed the populace but can provide a really decent way of life.

Since we're always talking about education reform in Oregon, here's
an idea from Armenia: Make chess a compulsory subject in grade schools.

That's what they've done in that small country, a former Soviet
republic sandwiched between Turkey and Azerbaijan, and between Georgia
and Iran.

The Internet news program European Journal reports on the development
in its current edition. It quotes the leader of a public school and
others about the hoped-for benefits of the new requirement.

They expect the pupils to learn logic and the ability to plan ahead,
along with flexibility to meet unexpected moves, and certainly
patience, self-discipline and nerve. The one who loses his nerve first
loses the game, one of the children earnestly says on the program.

Chess apparently is the Armenian national sport. The country has
produced dozens of grandmasters. So it seems like a natural subject
in Armenian schools.

In Oregon, not so much. Still, if our kids could sit still long enough,
learning chess moves and tactics might help them in everything else
they're supposed to learn. (hh)

YEREVAN WILL OFFICIALLY BE ANNOUNCED AS BOOK CAPITAL ON APRIL 22

UNESCO has announced Yerevan to be Book capital on 2012. Cultural
councellor of the Yerevan Municipality Aram Suqiasyan announced
during the press conference today that Yerevan Municipality started
the preparations already. Official ceremony of announcing Yerevan as
Book Capital will take place on April 22.

"On April 22 Buenos-Aires Mayor will hand the title to the Yerevan
Mayor. Nearly 60 officials are expected to visit Yerevan on that day
and many Mayors will be among them", Municipality fellow-worker said.

A. Suqiasyan noted that 23 small scenes will be built in Yerevan to
celebrate the events. Some events will be organized for the children,
book-selling points will be opened and open-air book fairs will be
organized. "On May 5-June 10 20 book-selling points will be settled in
Yerevan and the publishers will present their works. The main events
will be held in Matenadaran and Liberty Square", the speaker noted.

A. Suqiasyan said further that England and China also presented
applications to be announced as Book Capital 2012 by UNESCO but just
Armenia was elected as the 500th anniversary of Armenian printing is
also celebrated in Armenia this year. As the speaker informed two book
stores will be opened on the eve of the festival. According to him in
frame of the program Moscow days in Yerevan will be announced on April
5-7 and April 25-27 Saint-Petersburg days in Yerevan are announced.

The scientific and technical accomplishments of the Armenians are
impressive, given the fact that Armenians have not had a free country
to call their own until 1991.

In the United States, Armenians-Americans made important contributions
in medicine and the sciences. In medicine, Raymond Darmadian developed
the first MRI machine. Michel Ter-Pogossian co-invented positron
emission tomography scanning, which is used for functional brain
imaging and cancer detection. Dr. J.W. Kebabian and Dr. George
Aghajanian both did pioneering research that has allowed for the
development for more effective antipsychotics drugs.

Dr. Alex Sevanian helped establish that oxidized low-density
lipoprotein plays a role in atherosclerosis. Dr. Varaztad Kazanjian
was a pioneer in reconstructive surgery and has been called the father
of plastic surgery. Haroutune Krikor Daghlian Jr. was an important
physicist in the U.S. nuclear weapons research program at Los Alamos
and died from exposure to excess radiation at age 28.

Edward Keonjian developed the first pocket-sized, solar-powered radio
transmitter. In computer science, Avedis Tevanian was the architect
of the Apple OS X operating system.

In the former Soviet Union and today's Russia, Russian Armenians have
also made important contributions in the sciences and technology. Levon
Mikhailovich Chailakhyan was a Soviet Armenian biologist who was the
first to clone a mouse, known as Masha. Masha the mouse was the first
mammal to be cloned, years before Dolly the Sheep. Yuri Oganessian
is a Russian Armenian physicist who discovered a new element called
element 114, which was added to the periodic table. The famous
Russian MIG fighter aircraft were designed by a Russian Armenian
aeronautical engineer named Artem Mikoyan. MIG was an abbreviation
of Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau.

When given the opportunity, Armenians have achieved important
contributions to benefit mankind.

A stout taste of Armenia
Beer brewed with Armenian coffee will be featured at Dionicess X and sold at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank.

Within moments of stepping into Gevork Kazanchyan's Eagle Rock home, his mother Mary has placed a copper-colored jazzve of Armenian coffee on the stove. “How sweet would you like it?” she asks with a smile. A demitasse of the ultra-potent brew later, the conversation shifts to Armenian spirits. Bottles of Ijevan mulberry brandy are brought out. It's time for a tour of Gevork's pride and joy: the beer cellar.

Though Kazanchyan works in risk management by day, he is 100% beer geek by night, as evidenced by his fully stocked, custom-climatized fridge packed to the gills with global craft brews.

Thankfully that passion isn't lost on the populace: Since 2008, he has engineered a series of events titled Dionicess, which unites craft brewers, celebrated chefs and artisanal purveyors for an evening of gustatory delight. The series is toasting its 10th installation in June, and in honor of the occasion, Kazanchyan has tapped some of his brewing buddies to collaborate on a very personal project — a commemorative beer called System of a Stout.

The name is a play on the L.A.-based Armenian rock group System of a Down. The beer will include several quintessentially Armenian ingredients, including cardamom, Armenian cognac and, of course, coffee.

The idea for this regionally inspired beer was hatched at one of Kazanchyan's “inventory reduction parties,” where he and Portola Coffee Lab owner Jeff Duggan chatted over cellared beers about how they might collaborate. Duggan's coffee cred paired with his background in chemistry made him the perfect fit for a roaster. Then came the tough bit: finding a brewer. On a long shot, Kazanchyan rang up Julian Shrago, of the award-winning Beachwood BBQ & Brewing. Shrago agreed, and the rest is history in the making.

Dionicess has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 2008, where when Kazanchyan paired Glendale's Mignon chocolates with boutique wines for the inaugural event. His gatherings have since evolved to focus on matching craft beer with food in a unique, unexpected way.

“I look back at the time that I used to sit and taste everything with one other guy, and now I've got an Iron Chef winner [chef Eric Greenspan, Dionicess VII], an amazing world-class mixologist [Matthew Biancaniello, Dionicess IX], and a top brewer [Shrago] who want to collaborate,” says Kazanchyan, who grew up on the fringes of Thai Town and Little Armenia. “It's pretty amazing.”

Dionicess X's theme is appropriately named Coming of Age, and will showcase five courses (plus a few bonus rounds) of aged beers paired with dishes that feature pickled and fermented foods from around the world. Guests will get to take home commemorative bottles of the beer, as well as some of Beachwood's house-made, barrel-aged hot sauce. Of course, System of a Stout will play a central role in the meal.

“I've brewed a lot of imperial stouts, but this one is 100% distinct,” says Shrago. “It was inherently wasteful to brew, but it's got a great nose, and it's immediately identifiable as being Armenian coffee.”

The process of making the beer itself is unique. First comes the mash, where crushed grains of barley get mixed with hot water, similar to oatmeal. That sweet liquid is then drained into a boil kettle. That's when the blackstrap molasses, hops, cardamom and Duggan's Armenian roast come in.

“We can't simulate the body produced by suspending coffee grounds in the beer because doing so would cause issues with brewing and serving the beer. What we shot for was the flavor essence of [unfiltered] Armenian coffee without the gritty mouthfeel,” Duggan says. “This objective led me to the selection of the two [direct trade Brazilian] coffees I chose to custom roast specifically for this beer.”

To impart the coffee flavors into the beer, the beans were ground to a coarseness similar to that of a French press grind, and then steeped like tea into the boil. The beer was then fermented, finished and conditioned. Conditioning is where the coffee steeper is removed and swapped for Armenian-brandy-soaked oak chips. System of a Stout is currently in its last stages of brewing, and will be ready just in time for the 10th installation of Dionicess, which will take place at Beachwood on June 10 in Long Beach.

Long Beach is a haul from L.A., but thankfully the 10 remaining kegs of System of a Stout will be sold at a small selection of craft beer bars in Southern California, one of which is Burbank's Tony's Darts Away. Two dollars from each pint sale will go to the Real Medicine Foundation in Armenia.

When asked to speak about the success and growth of the event, Kazanchyan replies in a way that would make his mother proud. “It's very humbling and surreal that we've pulled off nine events, and each time they've kind of outdone themselves. We've really made the best of our resources and what's available. And Armenians take pride in being very resourceful, practical and innovative. We've had to be out of necessity.”

11-year-old Armenian chess player Samuel Sevian, who lives in the USA,
had a great success at the 19th Metropolitan Round-Robin Tournament
that was held in Los Angeles. Armchess.am informs about this.

Samuel scored 6,5 points out of 9, shared 1-3 places and fulfilled
an International Master norm.

"I read Forty Days of Musa Dagh by Franz Werfel at school, which
impressed me greatly," he said.

Asked if his exceptions from Armenia justified themselves, President
Fischer said, "My expectations fully justified themselves. I am going
to visit your cultural monuments tomorrow. As an Austrian I feel good
in a country, where culture plays a significant role."

Upon completion of his speech, he stressed Armenian chess players'
talent and success.

AUSTRIAN PRESIDENT SAYS ARMENIA'S GEGHARD COMPLEX WORLD'S CULTURAL TREASURE

Austrian President Heinz Fischer and his spouse visited today Garni
temple in Armenia's region of Kotayk, and then departed for Geghard.

In Geghard complex the Austrian delegation toured in St Mary (Surb
Astvatsatsin) church.

Speaking to reporters, the Austrian president said he has managed
to be in few sites in Armenia but has been greatly impressed with
Geghard complex and the spiritual songs by young singers. "Their
voice seemed divine for me. Geghard is not only Armenia's cultural
treasure but the treasure of world culture," he said.

"I am impressed with the hospitality of Armenians, smiling journalists,
there are no such in Austria and Vienna," he said.

Heinz Fischer will wrap up his three-day visit to Armenia after being
hosted in Etchmiadzin by His Holiness Catholicos of All Armenians.

Women are generally known as the more nurturing and caring gender.

Well, what happens when you combine those compassionate traits with
a genuine interest in genetic analysis? Ask Nelly Oundjian, a medical
geneticist with a specialty in pediatrics and clinical psychogenetics.

That may all sound quite complicated, but Oundjian describes her
profession in terms that we can all understand, which is part of what
makes her so good at her job.

and clinical psychogenetics Born in Syria, Oundjian completed medical
school there in 1981. After coming to the U.S. in 1982, she planned
to become a pediatric neurologist. However, after listening to a
Columbia professor's lecture on genetics, she knew she had found her
calling. "The field wasn't very advanced at the time so several of my
friends would tell me 'This is crazy! Why do you want to do this?' But
I don't know, it was so interesting, it was kind of my destiny."

The ease with which she shifted into this new branch of medicine seems
characteristic of Oundjian, who approaches situations with a level head
and positive outlook despite the often-depressing situations in her
work. As a genetic analyst, Oundjian diagnoses children and newborns
with birth defects, mental retardation, or other genetic conditions
and provides management and treatment. She also branches out to
provide prenatal genetic counseling to pregnant women and screens
for cancer genetics in women who have familial breast, ovarian,
or colon cancers. "I think my favorite part about my job is when I
am able to diagnose women and find out the case of their cancer,"
she says. "These women come in to see me and they're so scared,
but by the time they leave the session they have no fear because I
absorb it from them and give them hope."

These motherly habits come naturally to Oundjian, who is the mother of
three boys-John, Peter, and Andrew. Considering that she is a doctor,
one might assume that it would be difficult to manage a career and a
family at the same time. Yet, Oundjian explains that her specific field
of medicine has allowed her to work on a part-time basis. One of the
ways she was able to manage working and caring for her boys was with
the help of the Armenian community, through such programs as the ACYOA,
St. Vartan Camp, and Sunday School at St. Leon's Church in Fairlawn,
N.J. "In a country where people belong to different ethnic groups,
the Armenian community helped them find an identity and helped them
become better people," she says.

Oundjian herself has a rather inspirational way of connecting to her
Armenian heritage. "I remember hearing stories of my grandpa and how
he came to Syria and I always thought of the strength and perseverance
of the Armenian people," she explains. "A lot of times I told myself
that I had these qualities because I am Armenian."

With a successful career and a happy family already under her belt,
Oundjian has her sights set high for her future as well. "In the
future I would like to retire and write. I've written a lot of short
stories and even poems," she says. "But genetics have improved so much
since I started, I want to establish some kind of genetic center in
an underdeveloped country. I will retire doing that for sure."

THE ARMENIAN LITTLE SINGERS ARE MAKING IT BIG

The Armenian Little Singers choir - whose repertoire includes classical
songs, modern music, jazz and bossa nova - are performing in Japan
for the first time.

The singers - 40 girls aged 11 to 18 - are all students of music
schools in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, the mountainous landlocked
nation that sits along the old Great Silk Road and between the Black
Sea and Caspian Sea.

The group was originally established by Tigran Hekekyan, Professor of
Choral Conducting at Komitas State Conservatory in Armenia, in 1992,
and it has since won many awards at international chorus competitions,
says Min-On Concert Association, the choir's Japan tour organizer. It
also tours Europe and the United States every year.

For this extended tour in Japan - which includes 16 venues, some
of which have already sold out - the girls will sing several hymns
such as "Ave Verum Corpus," as well as a George Gershwin medley,
"The Girl from Ipanema," "In the Mood" and other popular songs.
