LA2DC: A RIDE TO BRING AWARENESS TO GENOCIDE

WTOV 9
May 6 2015

Updated: Wednesday, May 6 2015, 12:18 PM EDT

WEIRTON, W.Va. -- After a night of rest in Weirton, cyclists making
their way from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. looking to bring
awareness to genocide were ready to shift gears once again Wednesday.

"We've been running and cycling 220 miles a day -- every single day,"
cyclist Greg Aghamanoukin said. "And actually where we stand right
now to L.A. is 2,500 miles, exactly."

Many of the cyclists are Armenian Americans riding for recognition.

The journey began on April 24, the day that marked 100 years since
the Armenian Genocide.

"We're basically blown away by the fact that over the last 100 years,
100 million people have died across the world because of genocide,"
Aghamanoukin said.

The issue hits close to home for Hans Keifer, a rider with Armenian
roots.

"Those people are my family members; those people are my people,"
he said. "What happened to them, I don't want it to be forgotten to
be denied."

Keifer has been along for every leg of the 2,800 mile trip. There are
others who've joined in along the way, like Ed Mekalian from Richmond,
Va. He met the group in Weirton, wanting to represent the east coast.

"To honor my great grandfather; I'm third generation Armenian America,"
Mekalian said. "I hope to finish the ride in his honor."

After they ride into D.C., they plan deliver two messages. The first
is to prevent further genocides from happening.

The second: "A proposition from Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.),
which says thank you to America for all of the Americans that have
helped stop genocide in this country," Aghamanoukin said.

With each mile, their legs grow a little weaker...

"A lot of hills to conquer today," Keifer said.

... But their message grows a little stronger.

"We're ready to ride," Mekalian said.
